Unfortunately the other fast charger in Ely is kaput, so SOME kind of rapid charging would REALLY be helpful here... still good options to L2 charge overnight though. And the next fast-charger south of here in Alamo, NV is reliable.

It's the EPA that measures the range. I don't get why ppl think that it's Tesla that's overreporting the range. I can do better than rated range, you just have to pull out all of the stops. Perfect weather, no A/C (fans only), 40mph, aired up tires, I got 20% over rated range in my 2017 Model...

You know, you don't have to take whatever rental POS they give you. Legally they owe you a loss-of-use per-day payment for what it would take to get an equivalent vehicle. Insist on a rental Model Y from Hertz or the equivalent of what it would cost you to get one.

Baja is not Sinaloa. It's quite safe. I drove down in 2019 -- really amazing down there, you should go! Read the US State Department website for a state-by-state look at where it's safe to go in Mexico.

They’re at the far back end of the parking lot. You can see them way in the distance between the two lines of chargers.

One last look on my way home. Asphalt done, they’ve got guarding posts in, and the fence is gone from around the transformers. Fence still here at the stalls, but looks to me like it’s ready pending inspection, which could be awhile if they find something or could be any day now if not.

They take up huge space though, and they’re smelly, and you probably won’t need it. As an alternative, consider bringing a flat-tire repair kit and a 12V air pump to let you limp into a tire shop. You are not going to the boonies, you’ll entirely be near civilization.

They don’t just have to rent you any old car — they have to make you whole, by renting you a comparable car. Of course they try to get away with putting you in a $20/day econobox but you don’t have to take it. If it’s your own insurance company paying for the rental then it’s a different story…

Yes.... it can be repaired, but it won't be cheap. You've got a ways to go before it's totaled, but this brings you a lot closer to the edge.
