Navigate on Autopilot is Useless (2018.42.3)

As @mtndrew1 describes above, I've noticed two situations where phantom braking has occurred since the NoAP update (I have NoAP with lane change suggestions enabled with "Mad Max" on an AP2.0 MX with v2018.42.2): A car "changes lanes" into your lane, but so far ahead of you that hard braking...

Model X Crash on US-101 (Mountain View, CA)

Just wanted to follow up to note that the behavior of 2018.12 is much improved at this location. The MX moves to the right-hand lane well before the new center lane marker appears now, and it's much less jarring (if only because it's traveling a shorter distance).

Model X Crash on US-101 (Mountain View, CA)

To me, it looks like the paint on the left-hand lane marker is also faded (right after the crosswalk) and Autopilot may have lost the lane marker, but you could be right that the crosswalk may have also confused it. Looks like you have a vehicle with AP2 based on the purchase date. I'm...

Model X Crash on US-101 (Mountain View, CA)

I thought the larger issue that video from @cbdream99 showed was that Autopilot would use the right-hand lane marker inside the gore area as part of the driving lane, but it was hard to tell from the video whether it was actually following that, or still trying to complete the lane change...

Model X Crash on US-101 (Mountain View, CA)

Neither AP1 nor AP2 currently detect lane-splitting motorcycles based on my experience during various commutes home over the past two years. However, I find that having AP engaged while driving in the HOV lane–even in stop-and-go traffic–makes it much easier for me to watch for motorcycles...

Model X Crash on US-101 (Mountain View, CA)

I just used the Traffic or Work Zone Concern form on the Caltrans website to request the missing paint be fixed where the accident occurred. (I assume that asking for "new" things like cross-hatching or plastic sticks requires additional approvals or a full-blown study, but fixing deficient...

Model X Crash on US-101 (Mountain View, CA)

My guess is that the code to re-center the vehicle for lane widening and for lane narrowing either has some corner cases that weren't sufficiently tested, or isn't using a gentle enough "easing function" to move the vehicle back into a proper lane, or some mix of both. Has anyone else noticed...

Model X Crash on US-101 (Mountain View, CA)

@cbdream99 noted that they could make their AP2 Tesla (in the Dallas/Forth Worth area) enter a gore area from the left side by putting on a turn signal to trigger auto lane change. Autopilot apparently ignored the cross-hatching paint and the closer solid white line on the left side of the gore...

Model X Crash on US-101 (Mountain View, CA)

Here's another reason to be extra cautious with the new "wide-lane" support in AP2 on 2018.10.4: Lane correction when the vehicle is literally about to split two lanes at highway speeds is extremely quick. It felt more like an avoidance maneuver—as if it wanted to complete the lane change...

Model X Crash on US-101 (Mountain View, CA)

I'd find it useful if you posted screenshots and/or links to the interchanges you tried in the Dallas/Fort Worth area from Google Maps (assuming it won't violate your privacy).

Model X Crash on US-101 (Mountain View, CA)

Thanks for posting a link to this video. It's a great reminder that Autopilot is currently only as good as the lane markings (and sometimes the vehicles being followed), so if lane markings are missing or irregular, it's more likely that Autopilot might do something that you don't expect it to...

Model X Crash on US-101 (Mountain View, CA)

Well, if you wanted to take it to the extreme (Mythbusters style), have the "lead" vehicle being followed by the Tesla (with a minimum following distance setting of "1") not only obstruct the left lane paint from view at the gore point by driving too far to the left of the lane, but actually...

Model X Crash on US-101 (Mountain View, CA)

I believe Tesla still recommends using Autopilot on highways instead of city streets in its current state (although I couldn't find anything in a quick search of their website). The one thing you need to keep in mind (as noted multiple times on this thread) is that it's only a driving...

Model X Crash on US-101 (Mountain View, CA)

I have experience now with the new "wide-lane" feature. I just spent over 6 hours (with one Supercharger break) driving my AP2 Model X with 10.4 software installed on a mix of limited access highways, divided highways, and two-lane roads. My intent here is not to speculate whether the behavior...

Model X Crash on US-101 (Mountain View, CA)

Do we know how the Prius crashed? In other words, how was the kinetic energy of the vehicle (and driver) dissipated during the crash? Coming to an abrupt stop in a head-on collision (especially when hitting an immobile object like the concrete barrier) puts enormous G-forces on the driver's...

Tesla driver passes out allegedly drunk in his Model S, tells the police the car was on Autopilot Allegedly passed out drunk on Bay Bridge, Tesla driver claims car was on 'autopilot' To my knowledge, there has been no confirmation that the driver had his Model S on Autopilot before it stopped...

Model X Crash on US-101 (Mountain View, CA)

I reported that attenuation barrier being collapsed on Sunday using the form on the CALTRANS Traffic or Work Zone Concern: I'm not sure how many other folks also reported it, but I'm glad to see it was repaired on Monday, March 26: Prior to CALTRANS actually fixing the attenuation barrier, I...

Model X Crash on US-101 (Mountain View, CA)

A Model S/X would require more energy dissipation to stop at the same speed due to the extra weight of the vehicle (batteries). One has to wonder if these barriers are designed for heavier vehicles, or how they perform (even when properly reset) when a heavier vehicle hits them. Regarding the...

Model X Crash on US-101 (Mountain View, CA)

Here's the most interesting part about this image to me: At this point in the road with no gore treatment (such as cross-hatches or lane barriers/sticks), the space between the left HOV exit lane to CA-85 and the left HOV lane on US-101 looks like a full-width lane. As humans, we know that (a)...

Model X Crash on US-101 (Mountain View, CA)

Any incident that compresses that barrier would likely result in a report by the CHP, so reviewing recent CHP reports would likely give you the last time a crash occurred here. (Are those all online?) Not sure what information CALTRANS makes public, but I would assume they'd have records when...

    Software Update 2018.10.4

AP2 doesn't yet track six cars (two on left lane, two ahead, two on right lane) like AP1 does on highways (AP2 only shows up to two vehicles ahead of you in the same lane), but I noticed this new behavior with the 10.4 update and my MX: On a highway, when a car changes lanes in front of you...

    Software Update 2018.10.4

I bought an Eero Home WiFi System for my house to make my WiFi network reach our MX when it's parked in the driveway. I've received multiple software update notifications while using this setup. (I am not claiming that I have received more updates than other folks--just that when Tesla does...

    2017.32.6 ca28227

To follow-up on this issue: I restated both consoles, but that didn't fix the mirrors. I've been been too busy to call for a service appointment (and no one picked up at two different service centers when I did try to call), but I got a notice about a firmware update today, and after...
