    Superchargers in Australia

Even betterer would be: Only verified network owners (e.g. Tesla, Evie, NRMA etc) can upload new station information for their own network. Individuals would not be able to. This restriction is already in place for editing such locations (e.g. only Tesla can edit a Tesla entry in Plugshare)...

Great Aussie EV Road trips - Live to drive - Drive to Live

Nice overview! I purchased a Type 2 to Type 2 cable (and 5-pin UMC tail) in preparation for my Gregory & Greaves Corner trip in 2022, but never needed either. They aren’t cheap (around $250/$180 respectively) so wondered if I’d wasted my coin. Ironically, I’ve now used the Type 2 cable a bit...

    Tesla Software updates - Australia

Sounds a lot like my LEAF 🤣 except it’s never had an OTA update because it doesn’t support it, the battery degrades about 5% p.a., Nissan shut their Telematics service down in 2021 (their App never really worked anyway) and map updates could only be done at a dealer at a “you’ve got to be...

Australian Model 3 Highland experiences, tips, tricks

The price is almost dropping faster than my insurer’s “Agreed Value” 🤣 which effectively means I still have a “new for old” replacement policy, even though my car will turn 5 this year 🤣. Incredible price reductions. My LR cost me $95k on the road in 2019. More than double the previous...

    Tesla Software updates - Australia

Each to their own but the Tesla UI isn’t that bad. Seen plenty worse. At least now the UI has a search box, which largely neuters any UI confusion as to where a particular control is. These days I hardly ever interact with the UI anyway, it remembers all the driver’s settings, so what is left...

How do you listen to music?

That’s not been my experience. I just copy the entire folder hierarchy from my Mac’s iTunes folder as-is onto my SSD and it works fine. The Tesla media player recognises the metadata embedded in each song and the user can select from the Albums, Artists, Songs etc. tabs in the Tesla UI just...

    Jolt EV charging network

It’s not an EV parking bay but an EV charging bay - big difference. I’m sure EV drivers would be totally OK with the same $2200 fine applying to any vehicle parking next to a petrol bowser without being “plugged in” - in the name of equity.

    Jolt EV charging network

Hence the asterisk in my post, because that’s the behaviour that should be encouraged, even if the rule doesn’t require it… plug in and start a charging session. I don’t know why the rule wasn’t written requiring a session to be started, because it would be trivial to prove whether that...

    Jolt EV charging network

That’s cheap. NSW introduced a new road rule in Nov 2022 for unlawful parking in a designated EV charging spot. If a vehicle is not plugged in, or is plugged in but charging was never initiated(*), the fine is up to $2200. I should lodge an FOI request to find out how many fines have been...

    Jolt EV charging network

I make an effort to use the EVX polechargers in Sydney even if I don’t really need to. Some might think paying $0.50/kWh for AC charging is nuts but I like their solution, they are a home-grown company and I like supporting them. The Carillion Ave site near RPA is great… it’s a nightmare area...

At least it’s on the passenger side so you can drive the car until Tesla (or whoever you get to replace) is ready to do it on a day convenient for you, minimal time off the road. And depending on your insurance policy, should be a “free” no-excess claim. These things happen. I’ve had one...

Tritium asks Qld government for up to $90m bailout

How many millions did the previous Government throw Tritium’s way, one of our few home-grown tech companies, in order to set it on a more sure footing? Did ScoMo ever do a photo-op there? Plenty of bucks though for fossil fuel companies. Including $2 billion to keep two oil refineries here...

Everything has value, even if that value is not high. BP Pulse Network

Liquid cooling allows the cable to conduct much higher current without overheating. But they are really, really heavy and very difficult to manoevere. I have no idea why BP Pulse insisted on them, every BP Pulse site I’ve seen uses them. But 350 kW Chargefox and Evie sites seem to cope OK...

    Tesla Software updates - Australia

A lot of folk might roll their eyes at such an old-school wish, but it would be nice if a Tesla software update included an MP4 player to complement its audio player. OTR service station EV charging

Highway service centres are fine if not great places to have DCFCs. Suburban servos… not so much. In fact, typically horrible. My local council thought it would be great if they could encourage local servos to add EV charging, and I told them in very clear terms that’s about the worst idea...

Car Network connectivity solutions 2G-3G-4G-5G - Australia

Teslas being deaf to “wake up” messages is a randomly occurring issue that occurs everywhere on the planet. Happens to me periodically. The App is agnostic to the final connection to the car (WiFi or Cellular). When a car is charging, it is also awake. So if the App could not connect to the...

Yep. Trust the Nav. And a bird in the hand etc… if you are already charging and it says keep going for another 8 minutes then do it. It’s not a long time. Also most people report that a Tesla can go 10-20 km after reaching 0%, so you would have made it to Keith comfortably. Worst case, you...

    Powerwall 3 Roadmap - 3 Phase Coming!

Hooley dooley that is a lot of electricity. Are you into hydroponics or something 🤣 Over the past 12 months we’ve used 6.45 MWh from the grid (we have 2 x EVs) or 17.6 kWh/day, and solar export was 1.27 MWh total. We did that at the same time as getting solar + battery. We replaced every...

@meloccom - a lot of posts in this thread about grid rateplans that might be suitable for EVs - not really a topic specific to Highland M3. Powerwall 3 Roadmap - 3 Phase Coming!

Increased grid prices reduce the payback time of the battery, but has only a minor effect on how big the optimum battery needs to be (although I didn’t model that bit extensively). The bigger driver is household consumption - how much grid draw is avoided by having a bigger battery.

Car Network connectivity solutions 2G-3G-4G-5G - Australia

By the way, modems in cars usually support only a small subset of the mobile frequencies - typically the lowest band used for each technology, since that’s what gives the coverage. And they are also unlikely to support more than 2 techs (e.g. 2G/3G or 3G/4G). This is for cost reasons. So in...

Well, yes, but it is prepaid only, with no data rollover. I prefer Belong postpaid, which although gets access to the slightly smaller Telstra “wholesale” 4G/5G network footprint, has data rollover, so unused data one month rolls over to the following month with no cap on how much you can...

    Powerwall 3 Roadmap - 3 Phase Coming!

🤔 TL;DR: you can’t ignore the cost of that… it’s a relevant factor. — A few years ago I did a horribly complex spreadsheeting exercise to do a “what if” analysis of having different battery sizes. This analysis used my actual historical 5-minute energy flows (solar generation, household...
