    Charging safely at 9/12 amps?

Yeah, if the drop is just due to the circuit being a really long way from the “source” then the Tesla is probably backing off for no reason. It can’t tell the difference between a bad connection heating up and creating a dangerous situation OR just a really long wire where the lost energy is...

Supercharger - Salem, OR - SE. Mission St. (LIVE Jun 2023, 12 V3 stalls)

Thank goodness for a slightly less stupid Salem location! The current one is basically useless for many folks due to its distance from the freeway (if you care about speed). Great to see more coming!

    Jump-Starting 12V Battery Charger PSA

I am very curious how a firmware update could change this behavior? I have always assumed that the wires were to a solenoid and you needed a source sufficient to pop the solenoid. If they are just a signalling method, then some other power source would be required to actuate the solenoid which...

    Convert NEMA 5-20 to 6-20?

Most likely the wire in the wall is Romex (NM-B) 10 gauge. I will assume as much for this post. So yeah, in the panel you will take the neutral wire that is landed on the neutral bus (likely is common with the ground bus in your main panel) and “permanently relabel” it to black or red in color...

Wall Connector Installation Report - 60a using EMT - Parts List

Glad you liked it! It was at a friends house that I don’t have immediate access to sadly…. I might be able to get them to measure it tomorrow but no promises. :) Note this was a Gen 2 wall connector and so all bets are off with Gen 3…

    Supercharger - Hillsboro, OR

The nav system says one unit is out of service. Anybody know which one it is? I am here right now and was going to tag it with a label so folks knew not to use that one… It drives me crazy that Tesla knows one stall is down and shows that on the nav but yet they don’t tell people which stall...

HELP! Getting 0-1kw from 200 amp service on 110v

Lol, it is as if you are channeling the NEC code writers. ;-) As of more recent codes you now are mandated to have “multi wire branch circuits” (shared neutral circuits) breakers tied together with handle ties so that when turning off one circuit you are forced to turn off the other at the...

HELP! Getting 0-1kw from 200 amp service on 110v

I also never said I didn’t do it hot. :-) To be honest, I have done more hot work than I probably should and without always the proper PPE. The more I learn the more I realize how certain things have been dumb. (arc flash protection gear exists to keep you from getting injured, better just...

HELP! Getting 0-1kw from 200 amp service on 110v

Oops, I responded before seeing this post. Yup. This is a classic “loose neutral” situation. FWIW, if you had a way to connect to a 240v circuit you would not have an issue I suspect. 240v connections don’t use the neutral which is probably what is broken. Could of had the electrician wire...

HELP! Getting 0-1kw from 200 amp service on 110v

So lots of discussion in this thread, but I feel like I need more data. When you first plug in and the instant it shows the voltage, what does it show? Then can you show/explain how the voltage changes as charge current ramps up? Indeed I would first assume there is an issue on the circuit...

    Convert NEMA 5-20 to 6-20?

Interesting. I don’t know what caused this heat for sure. I would first suspect it was due to a loose connection from the wire to the screw, but as you point out it could also be an issue between the plug blade and the clamp in the receptacle. With these photos I can’t tell which (and even if...

    Convert NEMA 5-20 to 6-20?

Nice pictures. I am guessing that the screw was not torqued down enough or that insulation was caught under the screw. This causes heating obviously. This is a great example of why quality work is so critical and why I don’t recommend charging EV’s on daisy chained 120v circuits. Too many...

    Supercharger - Myrtle Creek, OR

So I know this area *extemely* well. The only chainsaw shop I trust to sharpen my chains is in Myrtle Creek and my friends own a bunch of property outside of Riddle Oregon so we use that freeway exit all the time. I will be down there next weekend and will try to do some scoping out. Either...

Wall Charger Tripping AFCI's on Other Circuits

I have an idea: AFCI breakers have electronics in them that can detect arcing within a circuit (typically caused by a loose connection). I am wondering if you have a loose connection somewhere on the main feeds to your panel, in the meter base, or even more likely, outside the home between...

Battery Pack Extender - Drop in Truck Bed

Sorry, old thread. But this is precisely correct. The ability to onboard a small generator with a fuel tank would be extremely versatile. Not having to carry the weight always is huge. Sadly, the economics for this probably don't work out. Though actually, having a small generator...

NEMA 14-50 is dead - all hail NEMA 6-50

What you have is actually a “sub panel” which then has a 50a 240v circuit and a 20a 120v circuit in it. Nothing to see here. Totally legit. No issues (one might argue a load calculation issue if it is only fed with 50a in total, but the argument would be that they are never used at the same...

    Scheduled Departure Charges Prematurely

Yeah, Tesla is trying to be “nice to the grid” here by finishing its charging by 6am (so it does not hit the grid during “morning warmup”), but this frankly pisses me off. I am not on TOU pricing and I have a lightly loaded 200a service on a transformer with plenty of capacity in a neighborhood...

2nd Gen mobile connector "ground loss"

My assumption is that the ground wire from the EV receptacle is not connected either at the receptacle end OR at the panel end (sounds more likely). Note that if your electrical panel is the “service entrance” then the neutral bus and ground bus are equivalents as neutral and ground are bonded...
  20. eprosenx

2nd Gen mobile connector "ground loss"

Whoh, this is seriously bad. Somehow you have a disconnected ground or perhaps ground and neutral conductors not properly “bonded” (which should only happen back at the main service entrance). The fix is probably not difficult here, but it may require an electrician if you are not comfortable...

    Supercharger - Hillsboro, OR

I am here now. All lights are on now. Four cars plugged in spread across the four supercharger cabinets. All appear to be working. The NAV says only three stalls available. I wonder if their system thinks one pedestal is down and also a full supercharger cabinet. That math adds up. Also...

    Supercharger - Hillsboro, OR

I finally got a chance to test these superchargers last night. While my M3 was too full (78%) and the battery was too cold to get any decent charge rate, a M3 rolled in (after a massive detour on Hwy 26 in the coast range) with only 2 miles to empty! They hit 186kW at 772 miles an hour! So...

    Supercharger - Hillsboro, OR

Yeah, these are useful for hitting the beach for a lot of folks (that may be traveling from farther away than Portland). But frankly, they will be used mostly by locals. It is super critical to have supercharging capabilities locally for folks in living situations that don’t allow for charging...

    Supercharger - Hillsboro, OR

Note that there have been reports that the working chargers are only doing 34kW. Unclear if this is due to local folks with cold/full batteries testing it or if it is due to some issue (maybe they are not fully commissioned yet either). Some folks also reported they were not charged for the...

    Supercharger - Salem, OR

Stopped by a couple of hours ago. Still same status. Utility power is clearly on, so just need to get those charge point units provisioned and then flip on the Tesla Superchargers is my guess! Hillsboro sadly does not have the utility power on it would seem (ChargePoints are off). Perhaps...

    Supercharger - Hillsboro, OR

Intercept work is complete. Trenches are back filled. It sounds like power is hot all the way to the main disconnect. If that is true, someone just has to come out and turn it on and test it! (I am not sure if commissioning is done by Tesla or by contractors) This thing is stupid close to...

Yeah, I was voting for one exit further West (Cornelius Pass) in the back of the Freddy’s parking lot close to Panda Express. You need to put them places with amenities (food, shopping, bathrooms), so that was the last exit you could do it at (though brookwood is developing now too). But I...

Master Thread: Definitive 14-50 NEMA Outlet Guide

Yea exactly! Also, modern aluminum wiring used in houses is a different alloy that does not have as much thermal expansion and contraction as the stuff from the 70’s. With proper installation and devices (receptacles) and the new alloy we probably could use aluminum for more things in houses...

Problems charging at 110v on GFCI circuit

Lots of comments: First, I would want more than 120v charging at home personally (also the Tesla would take the entire 120v circuit and limit your ability to use it for other things at the same time). A dedicated circuit is the way to go. As far as the instant trip you are seeing, it is...

That is really sad about the fruit. :-( I had been looking forward to it. I think doing some Tesla work on the side would be fun, but my $dayjob building datacenters is too lucrative to consider a change. :-( Someone beat me to installing a Wall Connector at one of the places we stopped...

Installing Wall Connector in Residential Building Basement

If your meter is indeed all the way up on the 8th floor, then getting something fed off of it to the basement is indeed likely infeasible. With that being said, all hope is not lost. EV’s are the future and all buildings need to deal with this. So most likely, some solution off a different...

    14-50 Wall connector over heating

Yeah, that voltage drop is bad. I can nearly guarantee that you have a loose connection at the receptacle. Kill the breaker, test to make sure it is off, and then open it up. There is a good chance you will have to replace the receptacle and you might even have melted insulation off the wire.

    Install Estimation High

The more I think of this, I likely would inquire about replacing the entire inside panel as well. It is the same age and while doing the outside panel would be good in many ways and would give you plenty of capacity for the Wall Connector, your inside panel is past its lifespan as well. Even...

    Install Estimation High

I have not studied your photos in great detail, but yes, I concur. I would not want to touch the existing setup. It is time for a service upgrade. Replacing the outside bits with a new meter main is a great way to go. (eventually replacing the inside bits would be good too, but they are not...

    Gen 3 Wall Connector

Sorry for my delayed response. I did briefly review the Wall Connector Gen 3 guide and I did not see anything that said it had to be hard wired (pretty certain this was more explicit in the gen 2 manual). So yeah, it might not be in contradiction of the manual and hence might not violate UL...

    Gen 3 Wall Connector

It is not to code as you are required to follow the manufacturers directions which require you to hard wire it. Specifically, all the Tesla items with plugs on the end (UMC Gen 2 and the Corded Wall Connector) have temperature sensors built into the plug end to detect bad connections before...

Model 3/Wall Connector charge current limited to 16 Amps?

Several thoughts: Even in the US we have some cars with 2x16a modules and some with 3x16a modules depending on which one you paid for. The theory is that they just don’t populate the electronics on the PCB for the lower end version. The “European” cars need to be able to handle three phase...

One Tesla charging leg 20F hotter

You have a loose connection somewhere that is generating heat. It could be at any connection point or even internal to the breaker. So in a panel such as you describe it could be the connection from the Tesla wires to the breaker, internal to the breaker, from the breaker to the main bus, the...

Model 3/Wall Connector charge current limited to 16 Amps?

So the question is: Does the EVSE have all the “hots” tied together externally, or do the onboard chargers have the ability to flip between phases? And if they can flip between phases, can just one of them flip or cans two of them? Also, I realized if you tie the hots together (internally or...

Charge port pin broke off inside HPWC handle

Yeah so this is a very common issue. We have dealt with it in the forums many times. There are pictures and guides online for how to remove the plastic from the charge handle if it is stuck. Some have heated up needles or drill bits with a candle and jammed them into the stuck plastic, let it...

    Degraded Charge Rate

Looking at the image that he posted, it appears the car is set to charge at 48 amps but it is only effectively charging at 32 amps even though it says 48 amps are available. If it was a failed / unlatched charge port the speed would be limited to 16 amps. This is going to be a defective...

    14-50 Wall connector over heating

Any chance the heat is being generated by your receptacle and not the wall connector plug? (they may have errantly replaced the wrong item?) Though if the new one is totally running cool then that was likely the issue.
