Is it unethical to charge extra for Autopilot (software) after we had paid for the hardware?

TLDR My view is that Tesla already included all EAP costs (under the current iteration) in the $49k Model 3 sticker price. The $6k is funding to sustain continuous improvement. If this is the case, I would rather be able to access EAP now with no additional unlock fee, but pay for future...

Is it unethical to charge extra for Autopilot (software) after we had paid for the hardware?

And you believe Tesla didn’t include the software cost of EAP into your sticker price? You know you already paid for all the hardware.

Is it unethical to charge extra for Autopilot (software) after we had paid for the hardware?

Thanks for the constructive post. I agree with your points but have a hard time believing Tesla would take a hit on profit and rely on future upselling to recoup their EAP investment - when they could’ve amortized that cost into the initial sticker price and still have a huge demand for the...

Is it unethical to charge extra for Autopilot (software) after we had paid for the hardware?

Good post, but I don’t trust Musk enough to assume that $14k delta is solely for materials. What better opportunity than launch to cloak other development costs into the initial sticker price. The cost to develop EAP is hundreds of millions. Wouldn’t it be nice if 100% of Model 3 sold...

Is it unethical to charge extra for Autopilot (software) after we had paid for the hardware?

Hence why I started this thread. 1) It makes all the sense to include the cost of EAP into the sticker price of every Model 3, since they are hurting for profit, and we will still buy the car, as shown when it went from 35k to 49k. Even at 55k with EAP as a standard option, it would still...

Is it unethical to charge extra for Autopilot (software) after we had paid for the hardware?

Thanks for the constructive response, this is what I had hoped to read. I agree with your points, but I am unconvinced Tesla chose not to already include the software development cost of EAP into the sticker price. We know they are struggling, and they know we are eager to buy. They raised the...

Is it unethical to charge extra for Autopilot (software) after we had paid for the hardware?

Because I don’t know if we already paid that upfront fee as part of the sticker price, and the $6k is not just to support their bottom line for other projects. It makes no sense for Tesla to leave that to chance and hope enough would buy to offset their to-date R&D spent on the EAP tech...

Is it unethical to charge extra for Autopilot (software) after we had paid for the hardware?

I want to support Tesla but until there is evidence we’re not paying twice for the current EAP that’s already installed in every Model 3 (not talking about what’s in the works), I’m gonna sit this one out. I can’t fathom at their executive meetings when someone said “hey you know the hundreds...

Is it unethical to charge extra for Autopilot (software) after we had paid for the hardware?

Obviously the public will never know. $14k all for heated seats, console and 30% bigger battery? Sure I believe that. Not sure why you would think Tesla wouldn’t want to recoup as much as they can with every vehicle sold - which means factoring in 100% of cost into the sticker price (hence...

Is it unethical to charge extra for Autopilot (software) after we had paid for the hardware?

And you have data to back the portion of the $9477 that’s actually for EAP in its current form wasn’t already amortized into the $49000 sticker price? I would stake a chunk of that R&D is on future software like FAP (which they will charge us for), and development cost for the Semi, Roadster...

Is it unethical to charge extra for Autopilot (software) after we had paid for the hardware?

No, because Benz doesn’t lock maps if you choose not to pay their $150 annual upgrade. My maps from 2014 still work fine. They also don’t lock your GPS hardware if you choose not to pay for an unlock as the case with Tesla’s EAP. This is not about capitalism. Tesla charged every one of us EAP...

Is it unethical to charge extra for Autopilot (software) after we had paid for the hardware?

We all paid our proportional share of it - dictated by Tesla - when we took delivery. I don’t think the $49k base we all paid ($14k upsell) is just for heated seats, center console, and LR battery. Pretty sure EAP cost in its current state, to the best of their ability, was fully added to the...

Is it unethical to charge extra for Autopilot (software) after we had paid for the hardware?

Are we talking subscription or NRE? Every mainstream IoT product has free software updates - phones, Windows updates, TVs, routers. Apple even does macOS for free. When Tesla rolls out FAP, then yes I would be happy to pay as that is a significant upgrade and R&D took place after taking...

Is it unethical to charge extra for Autopilot (software) after we had paid for the hardware?

Like I said, happy to pay for AP 3 and any associated hardware. Not willing to pay for the current EAP unlock since I already did pay for its V2 hardware and software in my $49k base price. Anyone who thinks Tesla put these in the vehicle for free needs to come off the fanboy wagon. They are...

Is it unethical to charge extra for Autopilot (software) after we had paid for the hardware?

EAP in its current product life cycle is already baked into the $49k base you paid. The additional $6k is just to enable future development, so why lock EAP (in its current state that we all paid for), rather than charge subscription fee for future upgrades, or like you said, make them...

I guess you are uncomfortable questioning Tesla - I’m sure Musk is an altruist and he’s not running a for profit business. Boy, there has been some good perspectives from the thread, but it has opened my eyes to the Tesla cult of devotees who can’t even entertain a discussion. I like the car...

Is it unethical to charge extra for Autopilot (software) after we had paid for the hardware?

Appreciate the informative post Tom - you get my question, but I find it hard to believe that when Tesla spec’d the car, and factored in all the costs that went in + cost for continued sw development, they did not put the maximum amount possible into the sticker price. Tesla is a business and...

Did you get EAP? Why or why not? (Poll)

No - because the $49k base price already factored in EAP hardware BOM and amortized software development cost (for EAP in its current 4 years old state). Unless there’s data to prove otherwise, I refuse to give Tesla another $6k for software I already paid for that’s simply license locked...

Is it unethical to charge extra for Autopilot (software) after we had paid for the hardware?

Paul, do you have unequivocal evidence that Tesla put all the EAP hardware for “free” and “did not charge for them”? Would any publicly traded company be so altruistic? What makes you so sure the $49k base you paid doesn’t include the cost of all these sensors and software development cost...

Is it unethical to charge extra for Autopilot (software) after we had paid for the hardware?

I agree with your assessment but I think it’s a huge gamble for Tesla to not amortize 100% of the cost of EAP into every Model 3 (which is why I think they did), and paying that $6k now is like paying for the same service twice. If there is evidence that the $6k for EAP has no overlap with the...

  30. Vaxe

Is it unethical to charge extra for Autopilot (software) after we had paid for the hardware?

But how sure are we that Tesla did not already spread EAP development cost into the $49k base price? I don’t think they would stake recouping all that software R&D cost to consumer choice.

I support Tesla’s vision and have always recommended them to friends and coworkers. With the latest firmware, I was able to try Autopilot for the first time and would like to buy it - but I’m having a hard time justifying the purchase. If I had to bring the car in for service to have them...

Fremont Delivery Center: What to expect?

Same here, picked up mine on Fremont with the car already outside in the parking lot. Half a charge, diecast model in the center console. Lots of excess polish wax and dull spots on the paint, they definitely were in a hurry to prep these. Anyone received freebies/swags with their delivery?

So I Have To Pay Another $2500 by July 1 to Avoid Annual Internet Charges?

I think the 1k deposit alone does not count as a “commitment to buy”, wording is vague but the 2.5k at time of configuring is the actual deposit until you get the MVPA.

Should I be concerned with a low VIN that’s been around the country?

Thanks everyone for the response. Based on Model 3 VINs (@Model3VINs) on Twitter, this VIN was registered in late April. Does Tesla register the VIN while the vehicle is in production, or after once everything’s completed? After reading all the horror stories here I just don’t want to be sold...

Should I be concerned with a low VIN that’s been around the country?

Tesla called me today to work out pickup details and when I asked for an earlier pickup date, the sales advisor said it’s currently in transit. As I am picking up from the Fremont plant, I asked why it’s in transit if the car is built there, and he said that’s just what the system is telling...
