    Wiki Roadster VDS Messages

Hi, I'd like to add some notes to error ID:287 "Powertrain Problem / Service Required" which came up yesterday after I had been driving in fierce rain and been loading the trunk earlier in the same rain, then tried to charge when I got home. The car would drive but not charge. I did put a call...

    Discolouration of HID headlights (solved)

Hmm, I sort of see what you mean from the photos. But trust me the "before" looked dirty and old, and the "after" looks as good as new. I probably shouldn't have even mentioned rainbows because it's the scaly patchy nature of the pattern that was so horrible. It looked old and broken. The...

    Discolouration of HID headlights (solved)

I know there's a couple of threads about headlights and issues with peeling covers etc., but I couldn't find anything about the odd patchy rainbow discolouration I was getting on my HID lights (after-market, upgraded by Tesla). It was annoying; not solved with Windex or any of my normal...

The on/off of the 12V outlet

OK, thanks for the clear replies. My natural brute-force inclination to send keepalive wake-up messages via OVMS every 15 mins is probably not such a good idea in that it will massively increase the duty cycle of that coolant pump. But at least I understand the issue now. Probably better to buy...

The on/off of the 12V outlet

Short version: Anyone got accurate information on when the 12V outlet is on/off on a Roadster 2.5? Can it be forced to stay on using a service code or something? Long version: I've been using a dash cam for a while (more than a year). It works fine and runs from the 12V ("cigarette lighter")...

    Random Roadster Sightings

Best picture of my car I've ever seen This was from "Cars & Croissants" New Jersey on Sunday. It really brings home to me the difference between my sad eforts over three years and someone who actually knows how to use a camera, with about 10 seconds to take their photo! Can't get the...

I think we can assume he got the tech package.

There was a recent raid on the "Dark Net", as documented e.g. here: Silk Road 2 seized in international dark web drug bust (Wired UK) From the article: Law enforcement officials found that he used a bitcoin exchange to cash out $273,626 between Silk Road 2's creation in November of last year...

    Which headlights do you have?

+1 to that. I commuted a few months on the NJ turnpike with the stock (Halogen) lights - the oncoming traffic is so heavy and bright that it looks like the Roadster lights are switched off. Upgrading to the HIDs was astoundng and I could finally see the potholes. It was like night and... uh, y'know.

What did you park next to? (Or what makes the Roadster look tiny?)

One of our neighbours is a partner in a company which tricks-out vehicles for law enforcement & fire departments. This is how he dropped his daughter off for a play date. Oh, and those green lights at the front go side-to-side like in Knight Rider.

    Open Vehicle Monitoring System

We <heart> OVMS Last night after a particularly chaotic trip to the local swimming pool and a subqequent car swap, my better half managed to lock both sets of Roadster keys and both of our iPhones in the trunk of the Roadster after I had left in another car. This happens because the Roadster...

[HOWTO] Converting your iPhone dock into an USB port

Great - thanks. Also +1 for the lego guy, now I've got "Everything is Awesome" stuck in my head again! Can you tell me - which stereo unit is that? I've got the Alpine in my 2.5 but the interface is different I think. Yours looks nicer.

LOANER BEWARE when getting Roadster repair

I don't know about "differently" - the NJ Service Center seems to treat everyone pretty well. I have been really impressed with the last few service visits (basically the 3 year / 36K and a few subsequent visits). I did renew my Extended Service Agreement - i.e. limited coverage out to 6 years /...

Plug In America Tesla Roadster Survey

Standard mode jumped 165 to 187 miles For the past year I have been driving the Roadster every day, but not far, typically 20 miles/day. I maintain the SOC between 80 and 120 miles and always charge in Standard mode at 240/10A. After letting it charge some time from 6 pm to midnight I stop the...

OVMS alerts going to wrong device [This is probably iPhone specific, I'm not an experienced iPhone user and only have one for OVMS... sorry for the noob-like question] When I first installed the OVMS module I quickly added the app to two iPhones and two iPads. But my personal iPhone does not...

Where are they now? The first 100 Roadsters

"divorced, beheaded, died, divorced, beheaded, survived..." This very interesting thread deserves a table on the Wiki. I'll start one at some point if nobody else does. As long as we don't invade anyone's privacy it would be a good resource to see the survival rate of these early cars. I...

    Tesla Roadster vanity license plates

Sorry it took me so long to catch up with this thread! This is a well-known celebrity from Princeton. He was at the Hamilton Supercharger event in April 2014 and is a really good guy. He has often let Tesla employees and enthusiasts charge at his house and that's how I met him in 2011 after...

Roadster annual service price increased to $720

My Roadster just went in for the 36,000 mile service last week (before the 3-year ownership threshold). So my comments: It cost me $600 although they had warned me beforehand that my 12v battery might need replacing (apparently it did not). They did clean out a lot of junk from the vehicle's...

Going Off Grid - Powering house and cars purely with renewable energy

Nigel, very cool, thanks for writing it up, and I have to tip my hat to you for putting in the effort with this project. Thanks on behalf of the planet. Roadster dash cam - suggestions?

I got sidetracked by other projects and funding was cut to this, so I didn't buy anything. I think it's still sitting sadly in my amazon basket in a virtual aisle somewhere. But I was planning to mount the camera in front of the rear view mirror and run the power cable basically where the GPS...

Thanks - will try that. From a quick googling it sounds perfect. I noticed that in the photo too but didn't know what to make of it. Will take a look when I'm back at the car later. Thanks for the suggestion! Best Regards

Corrosion around Roadster axles - advice?

I want to fix this rust: Any suggestions? I know this is not Roadster-specific but given that it's almost the only visible corrosion on a Roadster, maybe someone came up with a fix. I'm comfortable taking the wheels off and painting the exposed metal if that's what is needed. Thanks in...

Parrot Asteroid SMART 2DIN Head Unit

Sorry if I missed it but have you mentioned Tesla Motors' reaction to stuff like this Parrot installation? I'd love to do this. Looks amazing and the Alpine unit annoys me no end, but I'm afraid I'll be disavowed by Tesla if I start taking my car to bits like you had to. Actually I'm afraid that...

Jim Cramer test drive on CNBC May 31st, 2013

Thanks for the correction! Also to Doug for fixing the thread title. I think I was really wishing it was the Kramer from Seinfeld, followed next episode by a test drive by the Soup Nazi. In fact it was Jim Cramer followed by Tyler Mathisen. What we really need is Brian Sullivan to drive the...

Jim Cramer test drive on CNBC May 31st, 2013

Kramer is fond of hyperbole but has only been on air for a few minutes so far, already has said "Driving a Tesla has change my life!" and "The Beamer is a joke compared to the Tesla!". I might have got the precise wording wrong that's the spirit of it. More great publicity for Tesla. And Elon...

Sorry for the delay - yes, he has a 1.5 and has not had any problems AFAIK. I'll ask him to weigh in here. EDIT: I saw from the 1.5 tire thread that you already ordered these tires. So, good luck! I've been throwing the car about a bit in the past week and found the rears to be nice and sticky.

Another TMC member, who lives near me and has a lot more experience with performance driving, has put the DZ101s on both front and rear. Good points - in the end I went with a very low cost tire; Dunlop Direzza DZ101s and only replaced the rears. Tesla's new Strategy?!?!?

    Roadster True Cost of Ownership

My Roadster went into the shop today for a week - probably doesn't need a week but I'm going away so I asked them them to keep it. Phil LeBeau on CNBC "real time test drive"

I don't think anyone on this forum would call this CNBC coverage less than amazing. Possibly "game changing". And so far, LeBeau has really done a great job, at least on the on-air parts I've been watching. Very balanced. I think he did mention that the SuperChargers are free, in the last clip. He said he's already overcoming his Range Anxiety. Next hurdle is not Model S performance, but the fact...

Great videos 7racer, thanks! I think I want your life - sports cars, trampolines and exotic vacations :-) Having looked through the specs I am now almost decided on the Hero 3 Black, since it will make a great dive camera and when I'm not diving I will try it as a dash cam. It is very high...

Thanks for linking to those videos; both are great! Footage is pretty good too. Roadster dash cam - suggestions?

Having looked around a lot (thanks for all the pointers), this seems to be the best one for my needs. Surprisingly expensive at $300 but probably justified for an expensive car. Roadster dash cam - suggestions?

Actually the type of thing I am looking for is something which loops foverever, but at any time you can recover the last hour of footage.
