Home Charging in an Old Home

So sorry, but I take back nothing…letting mis statements go unchallenged , lead others also un educated about the electrical field and in general electrical concepts that lay people are picking up from the local Home Depot need dispelling, you’re certainly not doing that.

Home Charging in an Old Home

I think you should put your money where your mouth is and start an Electrical contracting business…you seemingly could really clean up in LA, if you could only suspend that pesky NEC and avoid local Electrical inspection there, that is.

Also if reducing fully the overall costs, note the neutral and ground wire certainly don’t have to be #4, ask your electrician, he’ll be able to tell you what size he’ll be installing…just sayin.

5-20 dropping 13 volts under 16 amp load. Not good.

Did a quick calc on my voltage drop calculator, length shows up at 200 feet with that drop and #12 wire, but remember it’s the total length of both the hot conductor going out and the neutral coming back to the source for the calculation… Extra resistance can occur in splices also, just...

    Convert NEMA 5-20 to 6-20?

No this was in my own home, and was installed by myself. Nothing was loose, and no insulation under the clamping screw. The problem was the proximity of grounding yolk, that’s pointed out in by the picture with the pen and the new design of that’s same manufacturer’s heavy duty receptacle. The...

    Convert NEMA 5-20 to 6-20?

I’m astounded by the assumption it’s only feeding one receptacle. Unless it’s in conduit that you can easily trace, it would remain just that, an assumption. Then at some time in the future when something gets plugged into that newly minted 240 volt circuit somewhere else, get ready for the...

Poll - how many charge at home?

@KenC, If you couldn’t ascertain which “leg” each 120 volt circuit was on prior to envisioning their combination, you might not end up with 240 volts at all. That said, you’ve also got regulatory hurdles to overcome “NEC” and local electric inspection to deal with, but not totally impossible...

Voltage drop is a product of any amperage drawn, and length of a particular wire gauge (size) as distance and amperage goes up, so does voltage drop. Your extension cord adds to the overall voltage drop, the condition and age of that cord has some bearing also (old, and with some strands...
