All US Cars capable of FSD will be enable for one month trial this week

Got the 2024.3.6 update on our '23 MY and enabled the FSDS evaluation. I had the opportunity to put about 200 miles on it yesterday, driving on both suburban roads and the interstate. The weather here in SoCal was downright terrible and we got caught in a torrential downpour on I-5 in the San...

Seriously OT: Lets talk Coffee (not cars and coffee, just coffee)

We were non-aficionado Keurig users for years. Kirkland Medium Roast k-cups from Costco. Recently I took the plunge and purchased a superautomatic espresso machine from a company called Terra Kaffe - the TK-02: https://www.terrakaffe.com/products/tk-02 My impression so far is a bit mixed...

All US Cars capable of FSD will be enable for one month trial this week

Not sure if you got the memo but the SC network is now open to other makes/models, and BMW is adopting the NACS connector. For existing cars, there's magic dock and CCS adapters.

All US Cars capable of FSD will be enable for one month trial this week

Off topic, but it should help BMW, if anything. The Model Y is so rough and noisy inside that getting back into the BMW will feel like piloting a magic carpet.

In my opinion, AI is more likely to cause a disastrous event than prevent one, particularly regarding possible existential threats to humanity.

    Electrify Everything

There is zero chance AI could have prevented Fukushima. The plant was fatally flawed by having its backup generators placed in a location vulnerable to flooding from tsunamis. Humans were well aware of the problem but chose not to do anything about it because that was the easier thing to do.

    Electrify Everything

In my opinion, nuclear energy is dead in the United States of NIMBY. All you need to do is skim a few threads on Nextdoor to understand why. Soccer moms come out with pitchforks any time Verizon or T-Mobile proposes a new cell tower anywhere remotely close to a residential neighborhood. Can...

    Electrify Everything

I am curious to know how much demand is (or will be) created by "legit" datacenters being built to train neural networks. For a company who's mission statement is "To accelerate the world's transition to sustainable energy", Tesla sure consumes a lot of juice in datacenters trying to make FSD...

How's the ride quality and the noise?

Ahh, I see I stirred the interest of a p-car enthusiast. To be clear, Porsche 911s have a very firm and stiff suspension. The Model Y also has a very firm and stiff suspension, much moreso than a vehicle in its category should. That's why I made the comparison. And I'm hoping the Cybertruck...

How's the ride quality and the noise?

"Rigid" isn't necessarily a good ride quality attribute. I'm not saying I want the Cybertruck to float and wallow down the road like a 1970s Buick but it would be nice if the ride quality wasn't harsh and bouncy like a Model Y.
  13. A

How's the ride quality and the noise?

I've watched several videos and also read magazine reviews (like C&D and Motor Trend). Most focus on the design of the Cybertruck, not the noise and ride quality.

How's the ride quality and the noise?

My wife bought a new Model Y LR last year after her Audi Q5 was wrecked by a distracted teenager. The Y is supposedly equipped with the "comfort" suspension, but to me the interior noise and the ride quality are very disappointing. The suspension feels almost as stiff as a Porsche 911's and...

    CPUC NEM 3.0 discussion

Having lived in a condo for over 20 years, I'm pessimistic that any sort of multi-dwelling/multi-tenant solar arrangement will ever be practical. Using my own HOA as an example, installing community solar would require a complete electrical infrastructure overhaul for ~250 units spread across...

    Tesla Optimus Sub-Prime Robot

There is no future I can imagine where people are having lots of kids and living a life of leisure due to an army of cheap humanoid robots which will provide an abundance of basic needs (food, clothing, shelter). "Blade Runner" seems a more likely outcome than "Star Trek".
  17. A

    Tesla Optimus Sub-Prime Robot

Yeah, I'd seen this before and remembered it was akin to a non-answer from Elon. I was just wondering if either Elon or Tesla has done anything to amend or clarify this since then. Doesn't seem so?
  18. A

    Tesla Optimus Sub-Prime Robot

Playing devil's advocate here.. If bots are more efficient at turning energy into work than humans, then the need for humans is either reduced or eliminated. Seems contradictory to Elon's own desire for people to have more children.
  19. A

    Tesla Optimus Sub-Prime Robot

Forgive me if this is a repeat question- I did a quick search and nothing jumped out at me. Can someone help me understand how the development of a humanoid robot applies to Tesla's overall mission statement (To Accelerate the world's transition to sustainable energy)?

Discussion: Powerwall 3 [Speculation / Discussion etc]

Update #2: Got PTO from the utility (SCE) so we're finally exporting to the grid. Right now it's generating about 25 kWh on a sunny day - seems pretty decent considering we're well past the autumn equinox (it's a 16 panel/6.4 kW system). SCE put us on the TOU-D-4-9PM plan but I'm wondering if...

Discussion: Powerwall 3 [Speculation / Discussion etc]

Installation update: After about a week of no activity, Tesla returned to our home to finish the job. The system is now up and running, although not yet feeding back into the grid pending final approval from SCE. The good news is we passed inspection with the city, and even better, the city...

Discussion: Powerwall 3 [Speculation / Discussion etc]

Update: We're in a holding pattern. It's looking like Tesla won't return to finish the installation until next week.
  25. A

Discussion: Powerwall 3 [Speculation / Discussion etc]

There's probably no way around this, then. The system is installed within a few feet of a garden hose bibb/pipe but I'm guessing that isn't routed underground but rather through the home itself. No way to tell easily, anyway. We'll work with Tesla to get the ground wire routed in a more...

Discussion: Powerwall 3 [Speculation / Discussion etc]

This may not be the right thread to ask, but... Can anyone explain why Tesla is insistent on grounding the system to the home's main water supply pipe? I noticed on the first pictures I posted of the Powerwall sitting on the driveway right after it was shipped and the shipping label says a pair...

  30. A

Discussion: Powerwall 3 [Speculation / Discussion etc]

I'd rather not share that level of detail. In the end, it doesn't really matter. You ask Tesla for a quote and they choose the equipment. AFAIK, it is not (yet?) possible for a customer to choose between PW2/PW+ and PW3. You get what you get, and if you don't like it, you can shop elsewhere.
  31. A

Discussion: Powerwall 3 [Speculation / Discussion etc]

I don't really care what the Powerwall looks like. It's a large box attached to the side wall of the house in a location where nobody will ever see it anyway. It's also accompanied by several other boxes (circuit relocation panel, cutoff switch, etc). What I care about is its long term...

Discussion: Powerwall 3 [Speculation / Discussion etc]

Yeah, that's the wire. You can see the conduit run underneath the PW. It runs all the way out along the side yard, then along the front facade of the house up and above the front door and eventually all the way to the front of the house where it attaches to the main water line. It's ugly.
  34. A

Discussion: Powerwall 3 [Speculation / Discussion etc]

If you saw the way the ground wire was routed along the front of the home and the walkway to the front door, you'd completely understand my ghetto comment. Since my post seems to have just blown up in blogspace I'm going to hold back on posting more information or pictures, at least for now...

Discussion: Powerwall 3 [Speculation / Discussion etc]

The installer said this was only the third PW3 he's done so far. It contains the inverter. Size is approx. 43"x24"x7". The circuit breaker in the Backup Gateway 2 which connects to the PW3 is in fact 60A. Job should hopefully be finished tomorrow after which they'll power it up. The...

Discussion: Powerwall 3 [Speculation / Discussion etc]

Sorry, I was confused by the original question. The main breaker to the house is 100A and that's not changing. The line diagram shows a 50A breaker inside the Backup Gateway which connects to the PW3. So yes, I agree that a 60A breaker seems like it'd be a better choice given the PW3's higher...
  39. A

Discussion: Powerwall 3 [Speculation / Discussion etc]

100A. They're relocating everything to a new 225A subpanel that's downstream of a Backup Gateway. EDIT: The diagram shows a 50A breaker inside the Backup Gateway feeding the PW3. I suppose that's cutting it close if the PW3 is capable of outputting a sustained 11kW. 100A is the main breaker...

Discussion: Powerwall 3 [Speculation / Discussion etc]

A friend who lives a couple miles away also has Tesla solar and PW on order. His plans call for PW+, not PW3. And his installation date is scheduled for one week before ours. It seems random that PW3 was spec'd for our installation but to be clear, our plans very clearly call out PW3 whereas...

Discussion: Powerwall 3 [Speculation / Discussion etc]

That would be pretty shady if Tesla installed equipment that didn't match the permitted plans, no?
  44. A

Discussion: Powerwall 3 [Speculation / Discussion etc]

Because "Powerwall 3" is quite literally called out in the plan set documents. It's shown on the schematic and also on the parts list. It also says "POWERWALL 3" on the permit filed with the city.

    SCE Rate Plans changing 3/1/19?

I try not to overthink it. I set my car to charge at 9:00PM. When I wake up, it's charged. If I drive somewhere during the day and get home before 4:00PM, I plug it in and manually start charging, followed by a "Hey Siri, set an alarm for 4PM". That way I get at least some mileage back...

    CPUC NEM 3.0 discussion

Emailed Tesla directly asking for an update on installation date. They responded with "We are still working on sourcing all the required equipment". I'm 99% certain this is because they spec'd in a Powerwall 3.
