    Ambient Temperature of an EV?

is the ice forming from overnight dew accumulation? In your situation, I’m gonna guess that the lack of headliner insulation and more glass (relative to most ICE cars) kept the interior temperature of your Tesla close enough to ambient so that dew didn’t form. At least this makes sense to me!

Installed and mounted Michelin Defender 2 in the size of 235/60R18. Adding my notes here

They were definitely available in 235/55R18 which, yup, is still a little oversized. I’m not sure if they come in the 50 aspect ratio. I specifically wanted the highest possible sidewall (without any suspension upgrades) to experience any ride quality improvements first hand. I had Discount...

Installed and mounted Michelin Defender 2 in the size of 235/60R18. Adding my notes here

I wanted to share my initial impressions and first 1,000 miles on an oversized set of 235/60R18 tires on the Model Y. Ride quality has been overall improved. It’s not Mercedes S-class level of plush or quiet, but it’s much more compliant and muted than before. There’s a clear “pang” sound at...

Steering wheel not able to drive straight

Definitely correct. A cold front blew in and the problem hid itself until I ran a couple errands back to back (which heated up the steering rack). I took my Y in yesterday and a tech immediately said, “steering rack is going out”. So they took it in and gave me a (poopy) loaner. Estimated...

Steering wheel not able to drive straight

Model Y 2023 dual motor LR with about 1,000 miles. I had this same issue start this past Saturday. Steering wheel feels like it’s got notches—just like a second hand on a clock face has 60 detents all around the face. Hard to drive in a straight line since i’m alternating between one detent and...

Road trip with the Thule Cargo Hitch Box (Transporter Combi)

I just took a look because I was curious. They go for $1,181.95?! That’s insane lol. I think I got mine (used) for $400. They pop up on FB marketplace and CL every once in a while.

Road trip with the Thule Cargo Hitch Box (Transporter Combi)

I disassembled the shank from the cargo box for easier handling. I used an angle grinder and a 4.5” cut off wheel. Had to rotate the shank 3 times to cut deep enough all the way around. I used an electric hand drill for the hole. It would be preferable to have a drill press since it’s difficult...

Road Trip Experience + Roof Cargo Box Efficiency

I like data as much as the next guy, but I'm gonna come out and just say it: there's absolutely no way that at a -14% range hit is representative of the energy consumption penalty with a roof-top cargo box. I had a 11 cu-ft Thule cargo box (which has a smaller cross-sectional area as yours) that...

Road trip with the Thule Cargo Hitch Box (Transporter Combi)

Nice! I tried opening the light assemblies to swap in LEDs, but they were sealed super tight so I gave up. Did you replace the entire plastic assemblies? Or is there a good way to crack them open for modification? I remember the halogen incandescent bulbs pulling over 7 amps when braking which...

Road trip with the Thule Cargo Hitch Box (Transporter Combi)

Correct, I can no longer use the Thule Transporter Combi box on a 1.25" hitch--only 2" hitch receivers unless I purchase or weld my own adapter. Pictures attached. To cut the shank, I basically measured the clearance I wanted from the trunk + an inch or so and then used an angle grinder with a...

Road trip with the Thule Cargo Hitch Box (Transporter Combi)

Do you have a factory hitch and wiring harness by any chance? It may think the wiring harness is connected to a trailer and because of that disabled AP. I have everything aftermarket, so it isn’t an issue for me.

Road trip with the Thule Cargo Hitch Box (Transporter Combi)

My AP and FSD have never been disabled with any update when using a hitch cargo box. I have been on the FSD beta for the last few months, so I’m not sure if the non-beta is any different. I am currently on a 5,000 mile road trip with the box installed and both AP and FSD are working fine. I...

Road trip with the Thule Cargo Hitch Box (Transporter Combi)

I don’t recall if I tried any superchargers before shortening the hitch shank. But with the shortened bar, I had no problem with any superchargers including ones with a pole or concrete pillar in the middle. I would suspect that you could fit anywhere even with the original length. One thought...

Road trip with the Thule Cargo Hitch Box (Transporter Combi)

I don’t have a factory hitch—I have an aftermarket stealth with the tow package (i.e. trailer wiring harness), but I can still answer your question. You need nothing else to mount any 2” hitch accessory. Just remove the plastic hitch cover, slide in your hitch stinger, lock in the hitch pin...

Are many people here using a model 3 to tow a small travel trailer?

I towed a 1,900 lbs trailer (1,760 lbs on the trailer axel, the rest on the 2” ball) for 1700~ miles with my 2018 RWD model 3. Power was never a problem, but colder weather and headwind WILL kill range. The shorter and less cross-sectional area your trailer has, the better.

In progress: Model 3 pulling loaded 1,900lbs~ 5x8 utility trailer 1,700 miles

The good: I’m almost to my destination! Only 1.5 hours for 99 miles remain! The bad: So far my efficiency is 433 Wh/mi over 1,604 miles. Lots of high-speed driving in TX and AZ so this isn’t unexpected. The Ugly: I really think a valve or a blower fan might be stuck. My charging rate is...

In progress: Model 3 pulling loaded 1,900lbs~ 5x8 utility trailer 1,700 miles

I heard the tow hitches were backordered for the Model Y, too, so a chip shortage or other shortage would make sense. They have several aftermarket options. A compatible wiring harness would be an additional cost. I have the Stealth Hitches version which may not be available internationally. I...

In progress: Model 3 pulling loaded 1,900lbs~ 5x8 utility trailer 1,700 miles

Ah, I definitely have autopilot and FSD, but when I enable it, the trailer sways uncomfortably. It works with a trailer since my hitch and wiring is aftermarket, but I drive manually with TACC 90% of the time. And yes, when I refer to cruise control, I mean TACC. Only had one bout of severe...

I’m not optimistic about this next leg… Willcox, AZ to Deming, NM. A cold front must be blowing in right now. I stopped last night because the temperature suddenly dropped to 36°F with a headwind. I figured weather would improve in the morning. Nope! It’s still 37°F and the headwind is 12mph...

The 5x8 are $930 + tax and CA tire fee at Lowes in CA. I got two $200 gift cards for $160 each which took $80 off. They have a military discount if you’re eligible for that. My original plan was to sell it when I get to my destination, but I may end up keeping it.

Cabazon to Quartzsite 159 miles @ 373 Wh/mi. Average faster at 67 mph while drafting 5-7 car lengths behind trucks. Headwinds 2-8 mph and 78°F. Lower efficiency is definitely because of stronger headwinds and increased driving speeds. AC is set maually to “Low”°F and fan speed 3. Note that the...

In progress: Model 3 pulling loaded 1,900lbs~ 5x8 utility trailer 1,700 miles

Long story short: I’m moving 1,700 miles and I’m really cheap. U-Haul rental prices are currently insane along with other shipping options (they want $1,600 for a one-way 4x8 cargo trailer. It used to be $480 6 months ago!), so I bought a flimsy Lowe’s 5x8 Carry-on utility trailer to do the move...

Road trip with the Thule Cargo Hitch Box (Transporter Combi)

I would second the rack option for the reasons you pointed out. My cooler of choice for the Model 3 is a small 18-can Igloo that fits in any "spot" in the rear footwell area. I wish it were a little bigger, but it's gotten the job done on a dozen trips.
  33. limmerguy

Road trip with the Thule Cargo Hitch Box (Transporter Combi)

I just measured mine. The cargo box has curved edges, so the depth measurement depends on If you want the cooler to rest on the bottom or not. if you want it resting, then you have a 15"D x 18"H x42"W rectangular prism of space to work with. If you don't mind the cooler riding up the sides and...

    Teslab workaround for 12v charging

From what i understand, constantly pinging the car and not letting it “sleep” still drains the HV battery pretty much at the same rate as sentry mode. Sentry Mode doesn't add significant power draw on top of the coolant pumps, fans, and HV contactors. that being said, if you roughly know the...

Wow, that's an unexpected diagnosis. Great that you got a loaner! I've only gotten a loaner once. Everything else was Uber credits (like, 3 times). I wonder if the humming noise was from the inverter and not the usual coolant pumps? If you can recall, where was the humming noise coming from...

Tow hitch bike rack and self driving

At least on the Model 3, Autopilot will engage without issue even though the “rear parking sensors blocked” error is showing. Perhaps this will change in a future software versions (I hope not), but it has been true since the beginning.

Suspected 12v battery dead.. Currently at service center. Happened right after getting a new coilovers set installed... also have a stealth hitch....

Got it. I’m betting it is the tow package wiring harness then. It might seem like a trivial power draw, but my guess is that it draws enough power to drain the 12V battery into sub-prime territory between top-offs. The 12V lead acid is relatively tiny when compared to regular ICE cars. If you...

Suspected 12v battery dead.. Currently at service center. Happened right after getting a new coilovers set installed... also have a stealth hitch....

Do you have the tow package that is wired to the positive battery terminal? This may not be 100% valid, but it seems like a lot if people with 12V battery problems have had an accessory tied to it.

Road trip with the Thule Cargo Hitch Box (Transporter Combi)

Yeah, this style of cargo box isn't very popular which might make it even harder to get. A hitch platform with a soft-sided bag or some footlockers is a good alternative. A locking box gives peace of mind, but if your trips is mostly in rural areas, national parks, or state parks I'd say it's...

Road trip with the Thule Cargo Hitch Box (Transporter Combi)

I definitely advocate for hitch-style cargo boxes/platforms since they, in general, don't affect efficiency as much as roof-mounted boxes. I don't believe you have to go for a fully-enclosed version, either. The enclosed version just provides you with a lock mechanism, waterproofing, and...

    Persistent issues with V2 superchargers

I’ve also encountered many v2 Superchargers charging at 72kW at completely or nearly vacant supercharger locations. I’d say this happened more often than not during my three most recent 2000+ mile road trips. The battery was always plenty warm and I arrived with low SoC. In order to get full...

Adding some more thoughts to this, drafting (and warmer weather) definitely helps range especially in gusty/windy conditions. Road trip with the Thule Cargo Hitch Box (Transporter Combi)

Oh hey, that's pretty cool! I was debating a DYI version before I ended up going with an off-the-shelf, lockable cargo box. I've been on a 5-person road trip in my model 3 and extra cargo space is definitely necessary. With this setup, I don't feel compelled to upgrade myself to the Model Y...

Model Y Towing - Experiences Post here

About how fast were you going? I'm doing a 1,400 mile move with the same U-Haul trailer. California speed limit is 55mph while towing which I'm hoping gets me at least ~450whpm. Also, how did you handle overnight rests? The trailer coupler doesn't have a lock which I'm a little nervous about...
