I don't think it is door dependent since my wife doesn't need to wait for me to open my door first anymore like in our 4Runner. Who ever reaches the door first causes it to unlock.

I remember watching a video where a guy was comparing his M3 that was an early production version, to his wife's brand new one. He pointed out that the back seats were raised about 2 inches higher on the newest one. I'm don't remember for sure what the date was when he was doing the comparison.
