How effective is regenerative braking in recharging?

This is where the roughly 70% I mentioned above comes from. An estimate of the round trip by .92 wheels to motor * .94 on the motor * .95 battery (round trip in and out) * .94 motor * .92 motor to wheels = estimate of 71% efficiency. Those are guesses, the motor to wheels could be lower even...

Missing my ICE car. . .

"Long tailpipe!!!" *drink* Bad news, somebody has lied to you and it isn't who you think it is. Your post is archetypal "self-righteous, misinformed, BS". "Some studies" = "[dated] nonsense spewed by hacks as part of a massive misinformation campaign", there's no real legitimate basis for...

How effective is regenerative braking in recharging?

The full cycle of wheel-battery-wheel is +/-70% efficient. In other words of the kinetic energy you'd normally expend using friction brakes about 70% of that is regained when you speed up again, and 30% is lost to heat in the battery, heat in the motor (AKA generator), imperfect tire grip, and...

Metal popping noise while supercharging - thin metal floor?

The Model 3's floors are very thin. Try taking the mat out of the back and then from just seat height drop a shoe on it. It sounds like it should be in the drum line of the orchestra. :p There is a large cavity underneath that keeps space between your feet and the battery pack, so it really...

NoA brakes on highway for merging vehicles

This is likely road database driven. If so, how often it happens depends on how good the database is populated for where you drive. There are actually some AP/FSD features that at first seem to be driven by perception but around the edges you can see it is actually melding a road feature...

    Snippiness 2.0

As @SigNC put on display above, fixating on the A/C being NOT a heat pump [which is moving heat from the cabin into the coolant lines] leads them to being incorrectly convinced (to the point of denial of the text right in the official parts manuals) that there isn't a refrigerant compressor in...

    Ingenext Boost Modules [aftermarket]

Exactly. Plenty of little stuff that has been pulled. Deadman pedal (wow, for me that'd be a big one if I hadn't got that), Homelink, little hooks in the back (not a big thing but there it is), the frunk mat, the ochre rear window (this was dropped ahead of mine getting built, unfortunately)...

Missing my ICE car. . .

Yeah, that was part of the appeal (see the last paragraph for the other part). And that's why the Model 3 killed any nostalgic feeling for manual transmissions because I've got the fine control responsiveness in spades now. "Rowing" up and down the gears does give you something to do but I find...

    Ingenext Boost Modules [aftermarket]

Gaffe??? Anyone that bought an AWD with a 990 DU got exactly what the paid for. And then Tesla bumped up their HP, and offered to sell them the Boost. This wouldn’t be a “gaffe” in any meaning of the word.

A few hundred pounds, it absolutely will. And it'll feel very different to drive and make it a lot harder to rotate the vehicle through corners. "Don't let the door hit you on the way out." - basic physics and the field of automobile design

Super Ludicrous and 400+ Mile Range Model 3...

Thanks for help making my point. There is nowhere in this world where the Challenger is considered a nimble car. :p Also, I'm not sure where those Camaro's numbers are coming from??? 4,120lb is an SS with 3 dead bodies in the trunk?

Super Ludicrous and 400+ Mile Range Model 3...

And their curb weight? The Model 3 gets away with the mass it has largely because it is located roughly “mid-engine” style.

Missing my ICE car. . .

This is a thing? Oh oh! I went through that stage, I thought it was just because I started in a Bolt. Now that’s only for when I’m mildly concerned about range. Or that one time I melted my brake pads & drove without touching the brakes for days until I got the discs turned...

Super Ludicrous and 400+ Mile Range Model 3...

Filling crumple zones with extra, oddball shaped battery packs doesn’t strike me as a good plan. Getting rid of the front motor while adding mass out in front of and behind the wheels would make it a far less desirable handling and performing car.
  17. SammichLover

Super Ludicrous and 400+ Mile Range Model 3...

BTW the "undoubtably" has an important caveat. That Tesla even makes a 100kWh RWD, rather than only having an AWD Performance version. The P PUP already ships stock with arguably less tire than it should for "Performance" vehicle that intends to make turns, and those tires already would make it...

Super Ludicrous and 400+ Mile Range Model 3...

Marketing wise my guess is the chokepoint is more likely on the acceleration performance side of it. Once the top end of the Model S (Plaid or whatever) makes enough room it allows them to take the Model 3 down below 3s 0-60. Stupid amounts of acceleration, and some top end to match, is the...

Missing my ICE car. . .

I drive my Model 3 with two feet. Because I'm old and running out of time. ;) I expect that'd keep your brain engaged enough to not really lose much of dancing on 3 pedals, that it'd come back pretty quick.
  20. SammichLover

Super Ludicrous and 400+ Mile Range Model 3...

Looks like I fat fingered on the calculator (332 instead of 322).....and yet it still doesn't actually matter, still lower percent diff than just a straight mass scaling. Decent chance it doesn't get a lot over 400, but mass has very little impact on a body in motion and with regen recovering...
  21. SammichLover

Super Ludicrous and 400+ Mile Range Model 3...

Then your math gets even worse for it not making it over the 400 mile mark. "Undoubtably" as in the opposite makes zero physical sense.
  22. SammichLover

Super Ludicrous and 400+ Mile Range Model 3...

    1) Assuming it is an extra 33% mass to get an extra 33% capacity is not a safe assumption. 2) (100/75)*322=429 , so 33% would be way over 400 miles. An extra 300lb mass, 7.5% mass increase, isn't going to cost more than 8% of range. Mass increase doesn't cause a linear Wh/m drop like that...

Uneven Re-gen Braking Feel on P3D+

Yes....and it doesn't change. None of them ever will. ;) Extremely unlikely, unless you drive around in Track Mode. :p You can yourself, with a bit of work and an assistant. You need to get a platform with a slight indentation (top of a bottle should work) that you secure firmly and level...

Uneven Re-gen Braking Feel on P3D+

Incidentally this is very likely behind why lots of Bolt owners swore up and down that the regen on the Bolt (without using the paddle) is stronger that the Model 3's. But when measured objectively the Model 3 slowed 50-5 (measured before Hold feature) in the same distance as the Bolt did, to...

Uneven Re-gen Braking Feel on P3D+

It isn't a subjective thing. Put a g-meter on it and it is there, the curve is different. I suppose you could somehow not pay attention but it is still there.
  26. SammichLover

Uneven Re-gen Braking Feel on P3D+

I only drive in "L". "D" is, well, "WTF where's my regen?" "L" is decidedly more harsh engaging than the Model 3. Absolutely no subjectiveness wiggle room there.
  27. SammichLover

Uneven Re-gen Braking Feel on P3D+

Until the Hold feature was added it wasn't at all clear vs the Bolt. The Bolt, when in "L" (vs "D", anachronistic labeling on the console shifter) will use the motor to come to a full stop (as long as the hill you're on isn't too steep). It is almost exactly the same amount of regen braking as...

Uneven Re-gen Braking Feel on P3D+

I don't know about the P, maybe there's something different going on there compared to the D, but since the addition of Hold mode I don't miss the Bolt anymore at all. The abruptness of it coming on after an accelerator foot lift feels very unpolished compared to the AWD.

Missing my ICE car. . .

** For some definition of "working in concert". ;) Here's an artist's interpretation of me missing driving ICE vehicles. I suppose there is something to them in that you don't need to find as challenging a road to still have "things to do". I very much do not miss the noise distraction, though.
  30. SammichLover

Uneven Re-gen Braking Feel on P3D+

Are the friction brakes actually used for that, before it hits 0 and engages the parking brakes (AKA rear calipers)? I assumed it was purely motor retarding the speed, that's what it feels like.

What is the tallest sidewall tire that will work with the stock 18” wheel

Accurate fixed distance with manual stopwatch time is comparable accuracy to dynamic consumer grade GPS measurement systems. Both can easily measure to sub-1% accuracy over distances of at least 1 mile (a few miles is better). Basically the GPS system is doing the same thing. The difference is...

What is the tallest sidewall tire that will work with the stock 18” wheel

I was wondering because i’ve done 2 miles measured & marked @ 60mph & it was dead on 120 sec. That’s not with timing lights but even hand stopwatch will easily reveal 1% off.

What is the tallest sidewall tire that will work with the stock 18” wheel

Stock is definitely Michelin Primacy MXM 235/45R18. What brand are your friend's tires? He drove it away from Tesla like that with less than 50 miles on the odometer? Or did he buy it used?

    980 vs 990 motor settled

I was guessing at how many may take the upgrade. Hard to say if there are 40K of the 980 D’s out there, a lot depends on the mix of 980 vs 990 during the first half of 2019.

Does the P3D - still exist?

    980 vs 990 motor settled

Very easy to spin it, "we care about our early adopters" is very Tesla. But unless they get really hungry for the maybe $20 mil laying out there on the table (wildass guess of $5,000 x 4,000 potential vehicles) it isn't going to happen.

@Sam1 profile says Nevada, there's flat pavement to be found at elevations even higher than that, there.
