Model S Technical / Mechanical Issues

I'm compelled to give an update on a persistent problem: interference with the key transmitter can make it impossible to open the car. For example, there is a toy store in Washington DC that's in a dead zone, for some reason. Maybe a transformer box above? If u take your kids there u stand a...

    Short-Term TSLA Price Movements - 2013

Citizen-T, how do you recommend managing the tax issues with that approach. It seems to me that unless you are in an IRA (as Robert.Boston wrote), each time you jump out and are looking to jump back in, you need Tesla to fall enough to make up for the 20% that you need to pay in capital gains...

    Thinking about Q1 2013 earnings

HawaNY- CitizenT on another thread is working through those numbers to see what that total might amount to- but yes, could have those kind of implications, depending on how it's done and back OT- this may actually make Q1 earnings report one for the history record books; Thanks, so many...

    Thinking about Q1 2013 earnings

How could a cash infusion, for superchargers or whatever, something on $250 million level, with minimal dilution impact (just $50 mill worth) not be a huge deal? Free money at a time when cash flow is seen as THE fundamental risk to the long term survival of the company.

    Thinking about Q1 2013 earnings

OK, thanks, so Elon would have the ability to put more like $250 million into the company based on just these options, right, if he sold them right away?

    Thinking about Q1 2013 earnings

Much appreciated. Right, so the $50 million or so is the amount that Tesla would get automatically, and if Elon sells them first and then uses that money for Tesla, that would be more like $250 million, I suppose. Now that's a lot of superchargers. But he's probably not allowed to sell all...

    Thinking about Q1 2013 earnings

Quick novice question: to plow the 50 m or so from his options back into the company, how does that work? Does he have to actually sell them, or just borrow against them somehow? And it does dilute the stock by a bit either way right (although small in the big scheme of things, I understand)?

an important note about the key fob and RF interference.

yeah, thanks, will do. Each time we've called so far, there's been hope that we've now fixed it (4.2 update, turning off auto-lock, etc) but then it just happened again. This time key was left inside, the car locked unexpectedly, and we couldn't open, even though key was in cup-holder. Maybe...

an important note about the key fob and RF interference.

My Wife and I have now had multiple times where we are unable to immediately get to our young kids as we go from front to back of car, get out groceries, etc, because the car has unexpectedly locked itself and won't open. We have the auto-lock feature turned off, and it has still happened...

Tesla to make "exciting announcement on Thursday" (correction Tuesday)

Thanks! Yeah, that tells me that "free solar" for Tesla owners probably won't be it. Would be nice though.

Tesla to make "exciting announcement on Thursday" (correction Tuesday)

His personal financing if supercharges would be a big deal. IMO a major short motivator is that TM won't get over the "hump" of having enough cash to have enough supercharges to make the breakthrough to large scale adoption, which depends on solving the road trip issue. Taking that breakthrough...

Tesla to make "exciting announcement on Thursday" (correction Tuesday)

Isn't the point of solar city that its already free: they install the system and you pay, but still save money vs you current bill, for the electricity?

    EMF Radiation

Sorry for late reply...I probably have consumery version, but got the fanciest I could easily find on Internet. 200 bucks or so. Will post model number... - - - Updated - - - Ok, wait, so you ARE making fun of me for having an EMF reader? Rats.

    EMF Radiation

As long as no one makes fun of me for having an emf reader, I will report that I took a ride with my performance S, burned rubber, and never saw any reaction from the reader. In front and back seats it stayed under 1 mg. Held it low near feet, nothing. By comparison if I hold same device near...

Trade In $$ for your Roadster?

I had an excellent experience with their trade in service. I found the transparency that they provide about their market data to have been extremely useful in making decisions about the roadster in the face of an arriving S. My service was very prompt and useful.

    #1008 - Glacier Blue Sport - Washington, D.C.

Thanks! We love it. Just gotta make room for the big S. Man, the glacier blue would have looked good with the green S though.

    #1008 - Glacier Blue Sport - Washington, D.C.

It was a demo in the LA store. So driven by important celebrities I'm sure:smile: As you know, Tesla then does full inspection etc and the warranty starts from the date of sale to me.

    #1008 - Glacier Blue Sport - Washington, D.C.

Update: Model S delivery has been moved up (that seems to be the new trend!), so I'm going to trade in on Friday unless there is any interest.

    #1008 - Glacier Blue Sport - Washington, D.C.

8,700 miles. Vin 1008. Excellent condition. Has air-bag on/off switch installed, under Tesla's supervision, to allow child seat in passenger side. Just put in on Ebay for 98,000-108,000 auction. Intend to trade in to Tesla if no offers made. Tesla intends to sell this car for significantly...

    Tesla Roadster on Nürburgring Nordschleife

OK, Tesla Munich, you saved the crashed around-the-world-in-80-days car (great job!). Now its time to get a car ready for the Nordschleife (could you up top speed temporarily?) and get a driver to beat the Audi R-8 etron that claims it has just set the EV record. Teu! Teu! Teu! Audi R8 e-tron...

Likelihood of a CHAdeMO adapter for the Model S

OK, wait, why hasn't the Roadster done the Nurburgring? The street R-8 etron has the same 125mph top speed limitation, which they increased to 155 for this stunt to grab the record. As a German, I demand the same respect from TM. (Sorry to be off topic!)

    DC Quick Charge vs Supercharge

Anybody have an update on plans for a chademo adapter for the S? Just 'we're working on it', or is there more? Sorry if that discussion is actively going on in another thread right now--haven't found anything recent in a while...

Edmunds full test: all range tests over 260 miles

Another ho-hum great review, but now Edmunds validates the EPA range numbers as conservative, as they get over 260 miles in three different range tests, with AC and stereo blaring, etc. 2012 Tesla Model S Full Test

Model S Shows Its True Colors (Photos)

As one of the agitators for systematic pics like this, thanks very much GeorgeB! My remaining suggestion: continue to work on innovative ways to integrate these photos right up front into the design studio. My wife and I are convinced that it remains a major obstacle for prospective...

    Safety crash ratings

were my thoughts exactly--just missed your post: New Safety Test: S now clearly safest luxury sedan available? A new crash-test focusing on a front corner impact, which is apparently the leading remaining cause of vehicle deaths, has revealed serious deficiencies in Merc, Audi and Lexus. S was...

New Safety Test: S now clearly safest luxury sedan available?

A new crash-test focusing on a front corner impact, which is apparently the leading remaining cause of vehicle deaths, has revealed serious deficiencies in Merc, Audi and Lexus. S was not part of the test yet. Should we guess that it would ace this with its unique front crumple zone advantage...

Need real-life pics of colors on design website!!

I totally agree-my wife and I relied on these pics to make the final call. Would be great to make even more accessible for all, ideally by Tesla itself. When we got our Roadster we were ultimately shown a bunch of real life pics by sales team which was invaluable despite uncertainties of...

Need real-life pics of colors on design website!!

I've sent in my configuration and I'm excited. But largely thanks to this website's thread on color choices and posts of real life pics from tour events. Tesla's got nothing! The design page color pictures are not even close to enough to make a decision. And locking in decisions is important...

Model S rampup to 20K units...

Has anyone seen a market analysis of how many buyers are out there that have garages, i.e. the least trouble installing a home charger. I live in a city and I'm always sad walking down my block and seeing all the cars that CAN'T easily be Teslas, at least not right away, because they live on the...

What is Tesla Motors' biggest flaw/challenge?

Thanks Larry Chanin for very useful info! Clearly TM is doing the right thing by keeping its options open. I think part of my point may still stand though: IF, for WHATEVER reasons, flat and larger cells do end up winning out, some good chunk of TMs intellectual property which currently defines...

What is Tesla Motors' biggest flaw/challenge?

Biggest weakness: the fundamental inovation of leveraging existing 'laptop' batteries is a short or medium term innovation. It is taylored--rightly--to the reality that there aren't economies of scale for car-specific batteries. But what happens when that changes? Where will TMs advantage be then?

    Model S Reservation Tally

Do you know that you must keep your battery charged?

The Roadster was at 68% when we left and at 55% (range mode, so relative to full usable battery capacity) when we returned. That's a nice even 0.5% loss per day. This means I could drive the Roadster down to 50%, and leave it sitting for nearly 80 days and still be above 10%. Interesting...

Do you know that you must keep your battery charged?

Does this provide a rational after all for having some solar cells on the roof? Doesn't fix being unplugged in a covered garage of course, but could it eliminate the concern if it was left outside for a long time by providing enough trickle charge to keep the battery alive?
