    48 Amp Charging Setup Question

It is absolutely safe and normal to connect a 100 amp capable panel to a lower amperage breaker. If you want to feed a 100 amp from a 60 amp breaker, go right ahead. Just don’t put any circuits on it bigger than 60 amps.

    Driving from Greece to UK

No clue. I got pulled over by police officers armed with submachine guns on the highway as I entered from Italy for not having one. They made me pay a fine of double the cost of the sticker and said I had 24 hours to drive on the highway before getting another fine. I think there’s a rest stop...

    48 Amp Charging Setup Question

you could also run 3/3 MC cable, which is 3 gauge copper thhn in metal-clad flexible conduit, from your main to your subpanel, on a 100 amp breaker. its an alternative to aluminum SER (service entrance cable), and its advantage is that its in an armored conduit. the SER is half the price, but if...

Broken charger head on Wall charger plug - Replaceable?

It’s only a quick ten minute job if youre replacing a wall connector with a new one of the same generation. If you’re going from a Gen 1 to a Gen 3 it will take closer to 30 minutes since then while mount has to be replaced. Expect an electrician to charge for an hour of work, around $100-150.

Can my house handle a charging station?

It looks like you shouldn’t be making coffee while drying your hair. Using the DCC you could get 60 amp service from the main panel sometimes, and 50 amp service from the subpanel sometimes. It’s easy to install, but I’ve never met an inspector who’s heard of it before, so tell them first. If...

ive done this with third party pedestals, looks similar to the tesla pedestal. the tesla pedestal seems to have the conduit hidden, running through its center, but youll have to verify that. a concrete footing or pad is recommended. just dig a deep hole (about the size of a 5 gallon bucket...

    Home circuit breaker 208 volts?

the tesla mobile connector works fine at 208v, check the manual. youll also notice many/most commercial j1772 chargers are 208v. https://www.tesla.com/sites/default/files/downloads/gen_2_mobile_connector_owners_manual_32_amp_en_US.pdf

    Home circuit breaker 208 volts?

you're neighborhood is on three-phase power. you've got two of three legs, your neighbor has a different pair. no big deal. most wall connectors (tesla's included) work fine on 208, just output a bit less wattage. three phase power is more efficient for transmission and can run better AC motors...

Builder installing 220 line to charge Tesla

60 amp wiring would be better, then you could charge a car at max if you ever installed a wall connector. You could have a 50 amp breaker and receptacle, but in the future upgrade easily to support a wall connector. if you want real future-proofing, install a 100 amp sub panel in the garage.

My new house is wired with AL!

Your breaker and panel likely don’t specify 90C wiring, which is where the 55 comes from. It gets downrated to 50 amps. Also, good luck finding a 55 amp breaker. The anti-oxide stuff is a good idea on any outdoor wiring, or any aluminum wiring, but it’s not going to certify the wire for 60 amp...

My new house is wired with AL!

6 gauge aluminum is rated for 50 amps, but i think the wall charger specifically states it should only have copper connections. if its only five feet from the panel, id just run a new copper wire so you can connect a 60 amp breaker and max out the wall connector (a 60 amp breaker will allow the...

    THHN and 4/3 Romex availability

if its a short run, just buy the wire at Home Depot/Lowes or a local electric supply shop. if its a long run, use cheap aluminum wire and have it terminate in a box near the wall connector. use Al-Cu connectors to attach coppers wires going to the wall connector from there.

    Charging at 44mph

There used to be an option that ended I think in 2018 for a 72amp circuit in model x/s. If your boss has an older wall connector that supports 72amp charging, that’s the difference. It would need to be on a 90 amp circuit breaker.

    Nema 14-50 install location/garage

i think if you install the 14-50 on the front wall of your garage, you're going to have a tough time reaching the charge port with the mobile connector. if you can, have it installed close to the garage door opening, either side.

Can you run a PC from Tesla 12v with an inverter?

i think the 12v plug is tied to a 15A fuse, so i wouldn't use more than 150 watts. if you want to attach a 500 watt inverter it should be attached directly to the battery with a fused connection, likely more work than you want to do.

Trying to reuse the existing wiring for HPWC. A sanity check for me, please?

If for some reason you decide to run new wire, upgrade it to support 100amp service and use a subpanel for future expansion. As for now, there’s no point in replacing wiring without an upgrade.

Trying to reuse the existing wiring for HPWC. A sanity check for me, please?

I would avoid the switch. There are simple/cheap junctions you can use and just put it in a junction box. Look for “Al/Cu wire connectors”, and get the ones that screw down, not the fancy wire nuts. Use corrosion inhibitor (Noalox) on the aluminum connections. As long as the junctions are in a...

    14-50 outlet on a 120V circuit?

I wholeheartedly agree. If you don't have experience wiring a circuit breaker you shouldn't do any of what i told you. i learned this stuff as an electrician's apprentice, not reading forum posts or watching youtube. that said, it would be very reasonable to ask an actual electrician to wire a...

    14-50 outlet on a 120V circuit?

It is simple to convert a standard 120v-20a outlet (NEMA 5-20) into a 240v-20a outlet (NEMA 6-20) by changing around the wires at the breaker. keep in mind it will affect everything on that circuit, so if youve got anything else on that circuit you'll start a fire. a 6-20 outlet will give you...

What Extension Cord Do I Need For 14-30 Drier Outlet

$100 sounds reasonable actually. if you buy the wire itself (8/4 SOOW), without ends, at home depot, it costs $3.24/ft. the male/female ends are probably $15 each.

250V 20A from two NEMA 5-15 outlet Charging different phase?

that's technically sort of possible, but if those outlets are using 14 gauge wire and/or connected to 15 amp breakers, you'll only be able to use a 6-15, not 6-20. having two circuits allows you to double the voltage, but the amperage is based on wire gauge and breaker rating. if the outlets...

If you’ve got a jack that is too high, just drive up on some wood blocks (I’ve used sections of a 2x4) before using the jack. If you don’t have a jack, get any one that says low-profile in the description and it should fit fine. The car isn’t too low.

Can I install a 240 Volt NEMA 14-30 outlet off my 30 Amp garage subpanel?

an electrician can use a clamp meter to see how much power your garage door openers are actually using, and you can replace your light bulbs with LEDs. if your openers only use a few amps each, a 24 amp draw from your car isnt bad. you could also set the car to always draw just 15-20 amps, and...
