Wiki Super Heavy/Starship - General Development Discussion

LOL this Starship design is not going to work for human flight. It needs an escape capsule. Until it gets one this will be a cargo only rocket.

    SpaceX F9 - Starlink 4 - SLC-40

I might be mistaken but during stage separation the first stage seemed to be exposed to more of the second stage back blast than usual. This might have caused problems with the plumbing for the grid fins. I wonder if they have implemented the auxilary backup pump system for the grid fins yet.

    Orbital refueling

Doing complex things with fuel in orbit seems like a bad idea. Inevitibly something is going to go wrong and two large rockets will be destroyed causing a massive orbiting debris field.

Electric Pickup Roundup: Musk Says Tesla Truck 'Not Like Anything Else'

Active cooling seems dangerous if this is going to be human rated. I wonder what type of contingency plan they have to save the humans if the cooling system fails.

Wiki Super Heavy/Starship - General Development Discussion

I wonder how a pad abort or in flight abort system would work on the BFS. Having such a huge ship with integrated second stage would make it very heavy and therefore difficult to get away from a first stage explosion. Furthermore, what if there was a problem with the second stage. One has...

    (FAILURE) SpaceX Falcon 9 v1.1 launch - CRS-7

The NASA report seems fair and unbiased. They made some very valid points about using out of spec materials for critical rocket components. Do you really think we should just let the manufacturer tell us what the problem was when there is a catastrophic failure? Would you really be...

    SpaceX Internet Satellite Network: Starlink

So lets think about this. 7500 satellites, 5 to 7 year lifespan, lets say 6 years. This means that SpaceX will need to launch one rocket with 105 satellites weighing about 40 tons every month for as long as they want to keep Starlink alive. The cost of the 12 launches would be around 1...

    SpaceX F9 - 5th Reuse - Iridium Next 31-40 - SLC-4E

The fairings are reflecting the sun which makes them bright. The fairings seem like they have thrusters but in actuality they are just caught in the exhaust of the second stage rocket and are reflecting the gasses.

    Model 3 part 3

I am still curious as to what the Part 3 reveal will be. By the time Part 3 comes around everyone will have already seen the new release body shape with the new better looking nose. What is it that is being held back for the Part 3 reveal? I know I might be beating a dead bush here but I...

    Elon's Tunnel

Drilling a hole can not be done any faster than modern oil drilling rigs. Oil drilling rigs drill much much faster than boring machines however if one were to use oil drilling technology and scale it up to a boring machine size you might be able to get some serious speed out of it. What would...

Is Tesla planning to enter the power plant industry?

I guess Tesla is calling them "Microgrids"? They built a 1.4MW power plant on a Samoan Island. Looks like they use about a 5 to 1 batteries to solar panel ratio. Cool stuff. Only a matter of time before California or one of the desert states gets a large one. Tesla converted an entire...

Is Tesla planning to enter the power plant industry?

Looks like I was not too far off the mark with my original post. OK they are starting off smaller than I thought but it is only a matter of time before Tesla and Solarcity combined start bidding on larger 100MW projects. Tesla and SolarCity in talks for ‘a number of large’ utility scale energy...

Something fishy about the batteries in Powerwall.

It seems that my initial post was not too far off the mark. Tesla is doubling the energy density in the powerpack series. Tesla confirms ‘Powerpack 2’ with ‘twice the energy density’, says already delivered 300 MWh of Tesla batteries

  24. J

    Unveiling on Oct 17th

My bet is that Tesla is teaming up with a major bus manufacturer to build full size electric buses. The "product" announced will be drive train, battery, and associated electronics packaged for sale to any major bus manufacturer.

Augmented Reality Projected on the Windshield

Volkswagens new concept uses augmented reality projected on the windshield instead of an instrument cluster. We know that Tesla has hired heads up display engineers. We also know that the Model 3 is going to have an instrument display unlike any car we have seen in history (otherwise it would...

Why AP 2.0 Won't Be Here Soon, and It Won't Be What You Think It Is

So the Volkswagen ID concept car which is arriving in 2020 will have autonomous driving and a steering wheel that retracts into the dashboard. If you still think autopilot 2.0 will not have fully autonomous CAPABLE sensors by now then you just do not have a proper grasp of the future. Fully...

Launch Pad Explosion during Static Test Fire - Sept 1 2016

If you slow to 0.25 speed and pause at 1:23 you see the intact second stage fall to the ground and explode. Seems the problem did not originate in the second stage.
  32. J

Launch Pad Explosion during Static Test Fire - Sept 1 2016

My bet is that the problem stems from the fact that they are using cryogenic oxygen that is colder than other rocket manufacturers are willing to use like ULA. I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night so I would know.

Will an 8 year old Model S be almost worthless?

Battery degradation seems to be a non issue. Plenty of data from Priuses and Roadsters indicate that batteries last a long time. The issue is battery failure for unknown reasons, an issue that no one can predict for battery packs older than 8 years because we do not have data on that yet. We...

Will an 8 year old Model S be almost worthless?

Once the battery and drivetrain warranty runs out I would think it would be very risky for someone to buy a used Model S. There does not seem to be a way to just fix a battery pack, drive unit, or PEM if something goes wrong inside. One must get a new one (or hopefully a cheaper refurbished...

Service Center Wait Times - Post Your Results

It is going to be interesting to see how Tesla deals with the massive influx of Model 3 which is only just over a year away. Do they plan on doubling the number of service stations? Are they doubling the size of current service stations? If so, they better move a little faster. Tesla is...

Model 3 Cockpit Similar to LeEco LeSee

Sorry but just no. Tesla has said that the blank instrument cluster of the Model 3 is incomplete and will be revealed at a second event. An event that Tesla predicts will bring much more demand than the Model 3 than there already is. Musk has said that full autonomy is about 2 years away...

Model 3 Cockpit Similar to LeEco LeSee

Well if the Model 3 was only being built with affordability in mind there would have been a conventional instrument cluster like the Model S. There isn't, and that is because Tesla has something else in mind. Something new and therefore likely more complicated than existing instrument...

100kWh pack - geometry, pack density and ... immersion cooling?

I suspect the cooling solution looks a lot like a pocket air mattress. Where the pockets are filled with batteries and the air mattress is filled with coolant. Of course the holes are much closer together for the battery pack version. I also suspect that that both the positive and negative...

    Tesla Product Announcement at noon

Why do you think that they are using anything other than 18650 batteries in this pack? Where did you hear about them discarding the bond wire fuses from the design?
  41. J

    Tesla Product Announcement at noon

OK 16.7% change for 11% more battery capacity. I really wonder where the 5.7% more efficiency came from because that is quite huge. That would mean the 100D would have an EPA range of about 340 miles.
  42. J

    Tesla Product Announcement at noon

Is anyone else even curious about the 315 mile range of the P100DL??? The previous P90DL was 266 miles wasnt it? That is a 18% gain of range for a 11% gain of battery. I wonder if the new batteries used in the 100 pack are lighter.
  43. J

Model 3 Cockpit Similar to LeEco LeSee

While I doubt it will be as complicated as what OP has shown, I do think the Model 3 steering wheel will fold or move out of the way in some sort. We have to remember that the Model 3 is being designed as a self driving uber type vehicle. There is no need to have a steering wheel taking up...

Something fishy about the batteries in Powerwall.

OK, in this video of the Gigafactory tour at 30:00 the tour guide tells us that each Powerwall consists of a "pod". Each pod consists of 2 modules. A Powerpack consists of 16 pods or 32 modules. He states the module of 14x32 cells is the same form factor that is used in the model S. He later...

Would Elon bankrupt himself before Tesla?

It is interesting to hear about how Tesla was started and how close Elon came to losing it all. I wonder now that he is super rich if he is still true to his altruistic vision. I understand that Elons fortunes are heavily tied with Tesla, however if push came to shove, would he sell his stock...

Way too early guess at the Tesla Urban Transporter (Spacebus)

You might be right. I believe Elon did mention something about the small transporter being able to accelerate the same as small vehicles to be able to keep up with stop and go traffic. Heavy acceleration would suck if you are facing backwards.
