New Homelink compatible Garage Door Opener

I don't know the answer to "possible" but "practically" you will need a homelink addon and a bluetooth addon if you want to use your phone. There are now some very cheap homelink addons: HomeLink Receiver – 2 Channel – Tessories Couldn't find an aussie link but they are out there. My 200Euro...

    Supercharger - Williams (WA)

awesome. still need one north but anything is encouraging. Problem is the Perth one (which I don't need or want) has been "coming soon" since 2017! So what faith have we got here?

    HPWC Grounding Scheme

Our MEN system used across 99% of installations in Australia is known as TN-CS technically in IEC Standards, but TN is close enough and fine. But yeh, if you don't know the answer to that, maybe you shouldn't be DIYing a 32A 3 phase device :) You know you should have a type A RCD???

    Supercharger - Perth (WA)

At this rate we should have a supercharger north of Perth by 2050 as well!

Tesla's poor JD Power consumer result - seeking comment for EV story from owners

My experience is aligned with that. A few niggles, promptly fixed under warranty. Nothing that prevented the car driving and nothing that would stop me buying another car from them.

Autopilot energy consumption - an interesting observation

But.... You still have power steering when manual. The difference may actually be from the computer, but that is meant to run in shadow mode anyway.

    Melbourne HPWC installation

The photo is of a 63A C curve miniature circuit breaker. It doesn't add any additional "safety" in the application it is installed. It just prevents you exceeding the maximum demand and it installed to cover their a$$ rather than to prevent tripping as they say.

    Model S hail resistant?

The glass is probably a big help, it will either be totally fine, or not!

    Electric V Hydrogen

Nice report, great info. Though as a Tesla owner, I really feel the chargers outside of Perth need to be prioritised by an order of magnitude over the ones within Perth. Also the RAC chargers seem to be frequently down or unreliable and probably need an upgrade if they are going to promote...

    Melbourne HPWC installation

Standard PVC cable is rated to 75degC. While that is internal (ie where the copper touches the PVC) and external temperatures can vary quite a bit from the internal temperature, warm is not a concern. That said, if you want to limit risk, limit wasted power along your cable and improve the life...

    Melbourne HPWC installation

32A on 4mm is fine unless you run it inside a wiring enclosure, then it should be derated. even then its on the border so I wouldn't panic. If your sparky says its fine based on the installation methods he adopted then I wouldn't lose sleep. Ok, so chances are (educated guess) you are limited...

    Melbourne HPWC installation

Electrical Engineer here, and what jetcharge say is possibly BS. But here are 2 reasons it may have some truth.... Circuit breaker current ratings are sized to protect the cable in the installation. Not the load, and not the person. The HPWC and the car have their own protections against...

    Navigate On Autopilot in Australia

I'm glad I have it as a demonstration of what the tech can do, but I think I will leave it off by default. It seems to be a little erratic, although not dangerously so, but I also have issues with exits, in fact one time it got right near the exit before putting the right hand blinker on. I...

From P85D to.....which Ludicrous model to get?

Have you asked Tesla if they can upgrade your car to ludicrous? There was an upgrade on some p85d cars that they could do with some upgraded cabling and software. While I don't think it was ever cheap it would likely be less than taking the depreciation hit, low balled trade in deal, upgrade...

    Tesla Model 3 in Australia

Wants cake and eating cake. I think what Tesla has done is very fair. Price configured back then was x now it's dropped to y. So they gave the lower of the two total prices. As there was never an opportunity to get both lower prices why should they cut themselves short.
  18. M

    Model S Price Rise

Tesla will honour the price you ordered at, no need to stress there. And I don't get the concern with 2% price fluctuations. If you want to see 2% variations with other cars just go to 5 different dealers and observe 5 different prices, each with varied options and extras and up sells for...

    Melbourne HPWC installation

Ok so I've had another look and it appears 32A single phase is what you will get with the Gen 2 UMC. That's what they get in USA and Europe, but I guess until people take delivery we won't know. You're confusing the onboard charger which is rated for 11kW on the lr and performance with the UMC...
  20. M

    Melbourne HPWC installation

Umcs are generally limited to 16A and I understand model 3 umcs are only single phase. So while you could plug it in to a 32A 3 phase outlet the improvement over a 10A standard outlet would be marginal at best. That said, for daily top ups 10A single phase is more capable than most people give...

    Melbourne HPWC installation

RCD = residual current device MCB = miniature circuit breaker A combined RCD/MCB is often called a RCBO Residual Current Circuit Breaker with Over Current Other terms like elcb (earth leakage circuit breaker) or electrical safety switch are also used as synonyms for an RCD. GFI (ground fault...
  22. M

    Melbourne HPWC installation

Why not just use the UMC that comes with the car? Adding a 3ph 16A plug on the other hand makes some sense and people have done it with mostly positive results.

    How does one justify it...

Hmmmm it did when it first came out. Or at least I was told it would and the website said it at the time. The return policy is still online and doesn't exclude Australia. I bought my car around the time it came out and I must admit the delivery agent was confused as to how it would play out...
  24. M

    How does one justify it...

We actually made a point of not test driving one. I wanted the first Tesla I drove to be my (errr our) one. You have a 7 day return policy. But it ain't going back!
  25. M

    How does one justify it...

I can confirm you are doing it wrong. I spent twice that on a model S P100D. I had to loan half of it and it has left us financially strained. But we'd do it all over again. The difference is it's not my car, it's our car, on that point it's our only car. My missus probably puts more ks on it...

When will AU have Autopilot on par with the US?

I'm not sold that is true or fair. The companies that are creating self driving cars will need to demonstrate to each government the safety and compliance of their features. Tesla is no doubt spending many orders of magnitude more convincing USA regulators than they are on the Australian ones...
  27. M

When will AU have Autopilot on par with the US?

My car doesn't have the hardware for fsd. Plus I don't actually think the nanny state will ban driving it will ultimately just raise taxes on car ownership until it is unviable. Tax is their usual preferred method of coercion!
  28. M

When will AU have Autopilot on par with the US?

As draconian as that sounds it's exactly my motivation for holding onto ap2.5!

Ludicrous and Standard changes Model S

Sure, but the old system, ludicrous was all margin minus the extra warranty claims. You might find there was very little margin on an S without ludi and the volume just didn't justify the option. Plus at 3.8 seconds and extra range on the LR version, do we really need a middle option? A premium...
  30. M

Ludicrous and Standard changes Model S

Here it was a 9k option. There a usd20k option. There was a brief moment where buying a model S performance with Ludi here was slightly cheaper than in USA after taxes. Their full performance car went up about usd6k or down 14k if you value ludicrous at 20k. Ours went up 9k or $0 if you value...

Sell me on a used P85D vs model 3 performance

Sell me on a used P85D vs model 3 performance

Drive both, buy the one you like. Also you won't take your ICE car on long trips :) Once you realise that they are so much better at distance cruising, especially with 2 kids that need to stretch their legs longer than a tesla takes to charge. Add in the cost and safety advantages and you'd...

    Electric V Hydrogen

I'm not saying that more EVs is unmanageable for the grid. I'm saying too many to fast are a problem. The solution is diversity of energy sources and uses. Agreed the government needs to stay away with their subsidies. Add a fair price on carbon the then let market pick.
  35. M

    Electric V Hydrogen

Why does this race need to have a single winner? Let's be fair, batteries have limitations. First globally we lack the capacity to make any more batteries or the materials to support more factories. Secondly we're yet to demonstrate any meaningful recycling. Tesla say they will do it but...

Can Someone Explain To Me Why The LR RWD Is Going Away?

I agree, the LR RWD Model Y is the most likely replacement to my Model S P100D in a few years. Though obviously I'm in no rush to downgrade on the performance (5.8 seconds would feel like an eternity), we need the range and the seats. I'm in Perth Australia, there is no historical record of it...

    Tesla Model 3 in Australia

Do they also have CCS2? If they to the CCS2 is native on the model 3 and upgrade and adapter for Model S and X would be a more compelling upgrade, possibly cheaper.
  38. M

Model Y now being advertised on Tesla Australia website

If down the bottom you click on Long range RWD you can get it to say 540km again.

Model S range and interior update imminent?

I've never really bought into this. Perhaps it's something we get drilled into is in Australia but after 250-300 miles of driving it really is time for a good solid break. Not grab some food to eat on the run, fill the tank have a piss and run but sit down and give the mind 15 minutes to chill...

Does this set the stage for Tesla to sell a refreshed Model S at a higher price?

Just for clarity, I never made any claims about being gentle ;) actually mine was an ex demo p100d, it had this issue from the first launch in my possession. it likely spent it's first 3000 miles demonstrating ludicrous mode!
  41. M

Does this set the stage for Tesla to sell a refreshed Model S at a higher price?

Err my S had the shudder issue. Was fixed and hasn't returned, but it was definitely there.
  42. M

Does this set the stage for Tesla to sell a refreshed Model S at a higher price?

A new rear bumper, sure. A new front bumper, maybe. A few tweaks to the panels, why not? A new interior, most likely. But can people get it out of their heads that the 2170 cell is coming to the model S or X any time soon. The whole platform is based on that size in the floor pan. You need to...
  43. M

    Model 3 LR RWD

That is to simplify production, the dash and front seats are mirrored, so you can't just take a white one from a LHD and apply it here. They had to pick one, and cost was an issue, so we got black.

Yellow screen border issue and Australian consumer law

Umm yes and it has had an appointment in which I was told a fix would be coming at a later date, and he dealt with my other issue only. Since then we've been asked to route all Service requests through the Queensland office and we have a specific "Perth service" email set up which goes to them...

Yellow screen border issue and Australian consumer law

I already have mcu2, if I didn't I might be happy to consider paying for an upgrade too. I'll happily pay for a ccs2 upgrade and adapter when we have a few more chargers in wa. But as there is nothing that needs upgrading now and I'm less than 1 year into my 4 year warranty I'd just like my car...

    Model 3 LR RWD

I think there are more hidden costs in getting a car to Australia than we understand, risk, insurance, forex all weigh a part. I actually think Tesla realised we'd be a hard market to crack so brought us there p3d- without the performance pack for about the price of what they thought they could...
  47. M

Yellow screen border issue and Australian consumer law

The issue has been known for almost 3 years, they now have new screens that don't have this issue. The fix is to get the new parts in Australia and replace every screen with this problem. That is of course unpalatable and expensive for a company trying to cut costs, but I don't think I should...
  48. M

Yellow screen border issue and Australian consumer law

Australian consumer law is quite strong and legally enforcible before any manufacturer warranty even needs to be opened. Particularly it says that all defects that present within a reasonable timeframe from purchase must be rectified within a reasonable timeframe from when they are presented to...
