How long one has to wait to get the V9?

I hated the UI changes in the last major update (was that V7?). You know what? After a few weeks I realized I liked it. We are not wired to like people changing UIs for us. But once we have retrained our own neural networks it rarely is not worth it (I still remember the complaints about...

How long one has to wait to get the V9?

This is most certainly the case. I was complaining that I wasn't getting V9, and realized I had changed my WiFi password at home and hadn't updated the cars connections. After I reconnected both to WiFi, my two Teslas received the update within one hour. I doubt that was a coincidence.

Upper Rear Link Build (Reduces rear camber to improve tire wear)

Anyone knows of adjustable rear upper control arms for a Model X (2016, P90DL)? It's eating ties like crazy and if I drive on anything but very low the front axle shimmy is too noticeable on hard acceleration, while if I ride on low or very low I'm riding on the inside edges of the tires. Ideas...

    these cheap tires worth it?

The folks bashing the Nankangs may or may not be right about them, but the fact that Michelin cannot make a tire that lasts even 10k miles on a properly aligned car driven carefully is disgusting and feels like a scam. I switched to Toyos today, will report back.

How do you replace Model X wiper blades?

I was having some issues with my wipers, thought they were worn out but upon inspection I discovered they were improperly mounted. The blade cover is supposed to be mounted on four pins on the edges of the mounting structure and only two of them were properly inserted. Removing and reinserting...

    knocking/rattling noise

If you hear knocking, maybe you need to move up to higher octane fuel. OK, now seriously, having had my MS for four years and my MX for one, I have some experience with noises. In most cases it was nothing. For example, a right side rattle I thought was on my passenger's door on my MX turned out...

    Firmware 8.0

Based on the time difference between EAP releases and releases on non-EAP cars (I have one of each, though I am no longer in the EAP on either) I think you are right. If I report a blocking bug there may be enough time to fix it or delay the release of the version, but for regressions or other...

    Next gen Roadster

On one hand, I don't think making a transmission is so hard nowadays. Yes, the torque and instant acceleration makes it difficult, but with proper electronics you can adjust motor speed on the fly to match gear speeds (and even actual angle) so they do not cause impact. It has all to be designed...

    Next Gen Roadster concept rendering

Well, it depends. If they want to do a roadster, something along those lines would not be bad (though such a long trunk doesn't make much sense technically speaking). Also, the seats are sitting too low to use the same flat battery system as the other cars, they would need to carve out holes for...

First 'flawless' Model X made on 4/29

Weird. I got my X two months ago and I am still waiting to have any issues. I must have been lucky (unless he refers to the rear seat recall).

    Model S Software/Firmware wishlist

Text to Voice works just fine in both my old Model S (an early model) and my Model X, so I am pretty sure this is a problem with your phone (I'm using a Windows Phone, but it also works on an iPhone).

    Model S Software/Firmware wishlist

A very simple but I think meaningful improvement: For those with parking sensors, why do we have a graphic display of where the sensed object is but not an audible indication? We have over six speakers in the car, so making the sound indicating object proximity come from the direction in which...

How does Model X drive compared to Model S?

I've had an S for three years, and now have an X. It is difficult to compare both as my S was a non-D, non-P, and the X is a P90D, but I can say that handling between the two is remarkably similar. Other than the extra acceleration and the improved noise, I could not tell with my eyes closed if...

Risk of autopilot being used for nefarious purposes

I was chatting with my brother about my new X and he made a comment that worried me. What if a terrorist organization decides to use a self-driving car as a car-bomb? Yes, autopilot cannot be used to deliver a bomb today, but in the near future that will be possible. I think it may be possible...

WARNING: I rear-ended someone today while using Auto Pilot in my brand new P90D!

If what you say is true, then one should always be braking at the same time as AP would, making AP useless.

3 day old import P85D crashed while using TACC

Beta software I'm sorry, but how do expect the software to ever go out of beta without allowing it on the streets? Is it supposedly to one day magically graduate from beta to release in a lab? What is the magical bar that separates beta software from released software? One software vendor's...

California dealers file complaint about the Tesla referral program

I am not a lawyer but the text quoted in the article says that "arranging a sale without a license" is illegal. But giving a referral is not arranging a sale. You are not participating in the sale at all. You are just sending them a candidate. If their interpretation of the law was correct I...

Speculation (and wishful thinking): "Towing Package" includes additional battery

An additional thought One additional thought: when towing, cars tend to become rear-heavy since for most loads (e.g. boats, trailers) have a center of gravity that's ahead of their axle. So putting the extra tow battery in the frunk would help offset that. If Tesla offered a battery pack that...

    Model X Option Speculation

I think the 110Kwh battery is quite feasible, and even more. Considering that the Model X is going to be much taller than the S and that the seats are in a more upright position, it would likely be possible to put a fourth battery pack under the two front seat rows. It may not be practical from...

Mirrors Gone from Model X on Tesla Motors Page

An interesting additional detail: if you look at the interior pics in the MX page, you'll see that on both sides of the speedometer you can see rear view images. So yes, there are no side mirrors, and the side images will be displayed (at least in the current design) on both sides of the...

    Rear Ended today,

Your fault. If on a car with such instant torque anything other than a Bugatti can manage to rear end you on a red light, you are driving it wrong ;-).

    Cost of repair crazy high

Thanks for the insight! I actually had what I would call a "minor" (but long) scratch on my Tesla made by a Prius (what do Priuses have against Teslas???) and, based on my experience in other countries I've lived in I expected a quote of under $1000 (very minor deflection of the aluminum plus...

Another Tesla fire in a garage, this time in Toronto

Not the 12V system Am I correct in that if the 12V system had been the source of the fire the handles wouldn't have extended as they are powered by said system? Once a 12V battery catches fire, it leaks acid and stops working.

    Off-Road Ability of Model X?

The original warranty docs for the Hummer H2 said "void if car driven off-road". So that's legal boilerplate, which can imagine Tesla would avoid (they seem to be ignoring any advice the average lawyer would give so far, which is good IMO). With a flat bottom, no air intakes, low center of...

Design improvements over what people have seen

I think what you call Model E should be Model C (people may want to buy a Compact, but you wouldn't want to be seen in an "Economy" car, especially if you paid $40K for it). Wagon will more likely be Model M or Model V (for Mini Van). Also, I think Model T is taken :-).

"The Model X will only be offered as all-wheel-drive" - Elon Musk

I see it somewhat differently. Many years ago, when I bought a cordless phone (rare at the time) my father asked why would I want a cordless phone. I replied "why would I want a cord"? I've seen this in many other areas (e.g. when I got my first phone with a color screen, and people wondered why...

    Pick a color, any color

In line with the pattern of Tesla Motors doing everything differently from everyone else in the industry (and doing it better), I wonder if there's a chance Tesla could drop the limited range of colors model in the future. Today you are offered the option to choose from a very limited range of...

    Non-traditional ideas on improving range

But one of the interesting aspects of an EV is that efficiency is not necessarily worse when accelerating stronger than when accelerating slowly. In other words, the car is not less efficient going from 30 to 50 in one second than it is when doing the same in five seconds. So keeping a certain...

    Non-traditional ideas on improving range

I'm almost certain the model S uses a heat pump already, there's no resistance. You can hear it working when the car is parked. - - - Updated - - - @neroden: Do this experiment: take a long, uniform downhill road at a constant speed (say, 25mph) and take note of how much power you are getting...

    Non-traditional ideas on improving range

We have been discussing new battery tech and other such things for a while, but I wanted to start a thread on how range could be improved in other ways not related to battery capacity. Some ideas I can think of: * Tracking distance sensors. Given that tailgating on a vehicle can get HUGE...

    Model X Side Mirrors

Lamborghini put side cameras on its prototype SUV, so if Tesla goes with this they won't be alone in the regulatory fight. My bet is that they will be offered as an option in the tech package.

    Anyone run "LOW"?

Who is saying that you have to park the car whenever snows? The claim is that you shouldn't be driving at 60mph in the snow. It may or may not be a valid claim, but certainly no one is saying you can't drive a Model S in the snow, just that the safe speed for a low car is not 60mph (to make a...

Tesla head on collision with a Honda

Where does the "more than 2x" weight difference recurrently referenced comes from? An accord weights 2728 lb and a Model S 4600lb (assuming the Accord has an empty gas tank). That's a 70% difference, not a 2x difference. Still a big difference though, but most modern cars are heavier than the...

    Model S Software/Firmware wishlist

Related to this, an issue I have is that cars (all cars that I know of) can only pair one phone, while they often have more than one phone inside. Of course, the only phone that MUST be paired is that of the driver, but since the car can't know which one is the driver's phone it will simply pair...

Owning a Model S : Safety issue when switching back to your ICE

Funny thing is, the same thing happens to me, and my other car is a compact, more expensive sports car! The day is not far when an inexpensive, family electric will be more fun to drive than an exotic sports car. That will be the end of the ICE.

Consumer Reports: "The electric car that shatters every myth"

I actually found that my driver's seat DOES have a small pocket right on the front edge, what I would call a map pocket. Too thin for anything useful other than insurance and registration though, but handy. - - - Updated - - - Storage and trash space. I can't believe I'm supposed to throw...

    Any Song Any Time?

I think the recognition speed is also dependent on the 3G network speed (I observed it being much faster when I have a good connection than when the connection is limited). So it may be that the car had a good connection (or maybe it was a car connected through 4G, I hope that option is...

Lessons from Model S to be applied to Model X

My recommendations for the list (and they better fix them because I sure as hell am putting my deposit for the X :-)): * The charge port cover needs to close automatically. I forget to close it too often, and I've seen a few Model Ss around with the cover open so I know I'm not the same. Either...

    Firmware 4.2

So, what's the consensus of the best process to report bugs (in particular bugs found in the software)? Being in the software business at a large corporation I can tell you that "report it to the company" is not the most efficient approach. It is better than not reporting it, but having it...

Hacking the Model S for evil...

And that is exactly the type of information I'm asking for!!! Is the ABS system under direct control of the UX computer or it just connected by a channel with a limited set values that can't be used to take control of the brakes? Same thing for steering and the drive motor, at least. If Tesla...

    Probability of new battery tech?

That is correct until you get to the charge/discharge electronics for the battery. The electronics to discharge a battery and move a motor are NOT me ones as for charging a battery from the AC generated from a motor.

What Could Apple Buy With Its $137 Billion?

Tesla=Apple A few years ago, every time someone asked me what the Tesla was, I used to respond "it's the iphone of cars". It might not be for everyone, but what it does, it does better than anyone else, and by a huge margin. Granted, the iPhone no longer carries its meaning, with the...

    Probability of new battery tech?

    > The drive electronics is harder to reason about without knowledge of the topology Tesla have chosen. Efficiency here is mainly a cost/weight trade-off (unlike the motor which has more constraints), and the drive/regen paths could be shared or separate to varying degrees, so it is possible that...

Hacking the Model S for evil...

Since the brakes are controlled by the ABS system and the steering has a strong electric motor attached, I think it is safe to say they are, directly or indirectly, under software control. Hacking the Model S for evil...

    Probability of new battery tech?

If you could brake with two wheels until the point of slippage, then yes, you wouldn't get more than double. But that's not the case. Braking with just two wheels completely unbalances the car. It makes turning trajectories to go awry when braking. It puts the car at a risk of going into a spin...
