Adding another data point here.

Model S P04xxx just had a motor failure. Managed to get home, but now car refuses to engage the motor. No warning signs such as reduced power, noise, etc. Just up and died.

Currently working to source a replacement motor (thank you @AutobahnEV ) since this car is not supported and get it installed.

I just had a total RDU failure, with my late 2014 P85D with about 65,000 miles, stranded out in the boonies. PRND all red, with a service required message. I could shift it into D, but as soon as I stepped on the accelerator, everything went red and locked up. Luckily a forest service ranger station let me use their landline, which I assume went via a satellite link, to call Tesla service. They were there in 3 hours and towed me approx. 100 miles to the service center, where it is currently getting a new RDU. Roadside assistance is wonderful, great to have if needed.

Anybody know what the newest car is that had a drive unit swapped because of noise?
Ill chime in here. I have a Nov 2016 delivery model S60 Just had motor and axles replaced at 49K motor had roaring sounds from 60mph to 80+ mph. New DU has very distinct high pitched whine ONLY on decel fro EXACTLY 25mph and below. I suspect the "New" DU is a rebuild, but not a good one. original failure was axles leaking

A question by a newbie for those in the know: If a drive unit fails in a dual motor S can the car still drive/limp on the remaining unit? I have a 70D and the next service centre is 400km away. Would Tesla pay for towing if it’s the drive unit and in the 8 year battery/ drivetrain?
Thanks!

got another surprise this morning, makes for second drive unit on a model s with 31,000 miles.

Issue: Gear Selection PRND is Red and will not move. Goes into gear but stays red.

Error code:
1. DI_w009_hwEncoderB (hidden),
2. [service],
3. Drive Inverter Warning: Track B disconnected,

Replaced sensor, no luck. I bought a wiring harness but not sure if I can swap it without dropping the motor.
