100D = best value?

I originally was planning to order a MX 75D, but made a last minute switch ordering a 100D. Comparatively, it seems like a much better value. Did anyone else make this switch?

The 100D has a 8% lower cost per mile of range compared to the 75D. Additionally, if considering cost in incremental terms compared to the 75D:

You only pay $224 more per mile of range compared to the 75D. Factor in the improved performance as a complete bonus (1.2 sec faster 0-60 time). Doesn't the 100D seem like a bargain? Hurry up and order a 100D before Tesla notices!

I made the exact same choice. I was decided on a 75D and made the jump to the 100D. Once you make the decision to go to the 90D then paying the extra $3k for the 100D is a no brainer. Makes me think that they arent going to offer the 90D for much longer...

I am as certain as I can be (when it comes to predicting the future) that the 90 battery will be discontinued several months from now and both the S and the X will be offered with only the 75 or the 100.

If you search for threads discussing the actual usable capacity of each battery configuration, you'll see that the 100d is an even better value

That difference is built-in via the range (he's not using the marketing badge values "90" vs "100").

We went back and forth whether to upgrade our 75D order to a 100D. Ended up deciding to stick with the 75D. Basically, it was a cost/convenience trade-off.

At $13,000 to upgrade, plus sales tax ($1000), plus our imputed value of loss of free unlimited Supercharging over 8 years of use ($2000), compared with where we tend to take road trips and 2017 Supercharger coverage, we decided it wasn't worth $16,000 to us to save out on the inconvenience of an occasional extra or longer charging session a couple of times a year.

Put another way, we'd happily count out $1000 in cold hard cash two times a year for 8 years when we get stuck with range issues.

Helps that I've had an 85kWh Model S for 4 years and have only been inconvenienced twice due to range, each resulting in an hour of time lost during a vacation drive. So, no big deal.

Naturally, your mileage may vary.

Perfectly valid choice. I think the underlying point is that a 75D will make sense for some and a 100D will make sense for others. But that's the end of the story. The 90D was difficult to justify before the 100D, with a $10,000 price tag for just an additional 20 miles of range. After the 100D came out for just an additional $3k, to my eyes, there are just two choices in battery size. I don't see the 90D selection anymore. The 90D was only viable as a way to keep the free supercharging while that was still a possibility. Now that the free SC is gone, I can't see anyone ever wanting to buy one.

I don't mention the P100D, because that choice only makes sense if you have money to burn. $37,000 to save an additional 2 seconds from 0-60 doesn't make sense to me.

If you want to compare it that way, here are those numbers:

75D – 75 kWh total capacity, 72.6 kWh usable
90D – ~ 85.8 kWh total capacity, 81.8 kWh usable
100D – ~102.4 kWh total capacity, 98.4 kWh usable

The 90D has an extra 13% usable capacity than the 75D for $10,000 more.
The 100D has an extra 36% usable capacity than the 75D for $13,000 more

I know the mx60d no longer exists. But if it did, the only two logical choices of battery size would be 60 or 100. The 60 is very nearly as good as the 75. There are very few real world scenarios that make the 75 worth the price premium on top of the 60.

If a 90 is a locked 100. It's not even worth the $3k difference. But you will never know.

Agree. A software limited version of the battery pack that comes at a discount to the full battery pack is almost always the better way to go.
