12V battery replacement: Tesla Li-ion

They tried to pawn off a 2020 Manufacture Date on me 3 months ago. Lead Acid batteries aren't in short supply. With the lead-acids only lasting 4 years, I don't want a 2 year old battery that's just been sitting on a shelf.

Yea its not gonna be a Lithium. That would require a charging system and BMS for lithium. Do you honestly think they are gonna just replace all that just for you?

I don’t doubt that Tesla will only replace Lead Acid with the same, but is is really a new charging system and BMS? Or is it just a firmware difference?

Its a whole new system. You can see this with the aftermarket Li batteries, they come with their own BMS but have to rely on a charger made for lead acid not Li.

I wonder if the new BMS and charger can be retrofit? Probably wouldn’t require a gateway config change.

It will require a config change. Check the Ohmmu thread and ask yourself is it really worth the trouble? On the config change, yea... like swapped matrix lights require a config, hell even the modded back in lumbar adjustment got firewalled out. It's kind of a downer, shrugs.

Forget ever seeing a retrofit to LI 12-volt batteries, but it would really be good if a software change could convert the charging cycle to fit AGM batteries. I sold 12-year-old plus VWs with original AGM batteries.

With a lot of ppl replacing their 12V after 2yrs, I'm wondering...

is there any harm in trickle charging the 12V with a smart battery tender?

I've read that the cars with the new LI batteries have a different wiring harness than the cars with with the lead acid batteries. Even if you could acquire the parts, I don't believe you can connect them to your existing wiring.

Probably no harm but also no benefit. The Tesla Model Y will charge the 12V battery as required even when the Tesla vehicle is not plugged in.

I’m sticking with lead acid. Yea, I had to replace after 2 years. Tesla covered it. It’s already almost another 2 years and this one is still going. And it’s a cheap replacement.

I’m curious if Tesla improved the charging algorithm, if there was a bad firnware that killed a lot of batteries, or if there was a bad batch. I remember lots failing around the time mine failed.

I only bring it up because I have an auto frunk... yea there's a manual release, but I've heard of that failing on some. I just plan on running a legit charging cable connected to the battery and leaving the end near the towhook for emergencies.

Sounds like it won't hurt and hopefully I won't ever need to use it, but it's cheap insurance

Don’t most people get a warning before their lead acid batteries die? I’m coming up in 6 years on mine. I’ve had British cars that are lucky to go a year.

Most get little or no warning, just confusing error messages or nothing.
