Thanks for that info Polly Wog. Judging by your success, I think I'll try to rig up something similar and string the cable through the air. Seems safer than running it underground. I only need it to last about a year or so anyway and then I will be moving to a new house (hopefully with a garage).

Also look at marine/boat outlets for 50 amp cords. Boats are moored in hostile environmental conditions.
