$350 + $3/mth

Someone tell me if I'm missing something. They have so much legal on their site and I'm not going to read through it all.

Seems like better deal, esp after 3 years.

+ a $99 installation fee so $450 + $3 a month for data connectivity for the duration of using/owning it.

$3 x 12 months = $36 per year x 3 years = $108 in data fees so that makes it $556.95 + tax on the $349.95 so close to $600. And then it's $3 a month for however long you use the plate after that

I don't want to necessarily buy this and own it outright. I want to try it out first. I'm sure after 3 years they'll offer a comparable price to own it if you want

Free installation and no monthly data fee only $17 a month. So $17 x 12 months = $204 per year x 3 years = $612

Really no difference. The subscription is more appealing to me as I wouldn't own it

It's pretty clear what the point is though. Sure, it's not for everyone; just how some people find the aero wheels attractive and I hate them. Different strokes for different folks. :)

Not the same im not paying a subscription for my Aero Wheels and they cant track me with my Aero Wheels "Trip logs, including start / end times for trips."

It’s doesn’t say that it’s CA DMV & CHP approved, also for those that did get one, did you get a letter from the DMV? Like you would get with the License Plate Wrap?

Well, Vanity plates here in Maine are $25/year and specialty are $20 for year 1 and $15/year after that.

As far as wasting money on pimping something that only exists as a regulatory requirement goes, this is a bargain.

If you really want to see pricing insanity, check out the totally legal personalized plate market in the UK.

Out of curiosity, why does lack of ownership despite higher cost make it appealing for you?

As a renter of housing, I kinda get it because I'm not suddenly on the line if the furnace dies or something. But in the case of this plate, if it's damaged, you have to pay a fee for returning damaged product.

For those that see some point to this, why not just buy an e-ink screen from Amazon and stick it on your car ?

Legality, mostly, probably?

It pains me to make the connection, but it's like Solar Roadways. Solar is great, but putting them on roads seems weird/inefficient. E-ink displays are cool, but putting them in place of a number plate is weird. But it's a spot you can put it, and drum up a lot of marketing for and people will buy into it.

Initially I worried about this maybe becoming commonplace and making its way to my country, but it won't. Non-corroding metal plates are absolutely necessary here. I doubt these electronic bricks would last long with all the salt and grit being wiped off them here.

the app has the letter in it for compliance. this product is widely known in LA and cali in general to law enforcement.

even if these "electronic bricks" make it anywhere where the elements are harsh,. its NOT going to be mandatory. its an opt in product.

as for installs, if choosing mobile, they will message you once they find a local shop to do it. then you schedule the time with the shop directly.

if the shop install, same thing. once you get in the system you will get a serial number assigned to you and then you will start to see the "your plate is detached" email/text and then you know its a matter of time when you get the email to schedule the appointment.

I am probably going to get one of these

I want it to display my handicap placard when I park

My carpool lane sticker when I drive in the carpool lane

I have that stupid sticker decal , And how some people put all four in various locations drives me nuts.

These are supposedly in the works, per the license plate company

If it can incorporate all of this, its a win

The other is aesthetics

I see some plates just don't fit the color schemes of our cars

If you change to a personal plate your just tell them and it changes on your car

Pay your renewal online and it updates your plates, no need to go to DMV or AAA or put the new stickers on

Regarding stickers, no need to put cuts in them so that others don't steal your entire sticker.

What look are you trying to achieve?

What additional placards are you trying to reduce manually displaying

they are trying to get approval in additional states, but they are all corrupt and want something in return or just don't want to deal with these guys. Another Tesla story.

But the other states will eventually jump on the band wagon when you can incorporate all this

Who knows, maybe you can get the Tole roads on board to automatically debit your account when driving

there are so many uses for this plate, National Park passes, Fishing license display, day pass at the Beach

It's all going to change soon

Metal license plates that are made in prison are going to be a thing of the past just like gas cars

You heard it here first

Stay safe my friends, and wear a mask, and cover your nose too. Sorry, medical professional here.

Visual, Drops the license plate bolts and walks away.

I would caution against buying it for future features (especially ones I can't even find on their website).

They might be working on the legal aspects (clearly they got the plate itself approved long ago), but they have clear blockers for implementing that in the current plate. Where would they fit the "carpool sticker"? They need a bigger screen. I doubt they can just shrink the license plate characters to show the decal, since the size is probably a large part of what is regulated.

I don't know if they currently do anything when parked, but I wouldn't be surprised if you need to display the plate fully when parked. Doesn't leave much room for a handicap indicator, for example. Think about things like parking that you punch in your plate number for, right?

Great. Don't care lol. Our phones and Tesla's already do that. I don't have a warrant nor am I a most wanted felon so I think I'll be good.
This isn't the place to go deeper into location privacy issues, but just some quick replies:

- It is possible to limit precise location tracking by your phone. E.g. Apple does not collect a location history from iPhones, carriers only have approximate location information, and you can prevent apps from constantly tracking your location in the background
- Tesla has said that it does not collect location history either

But even if that were not the case, it wouldn't be a reason to allow yet another company that we know little about to track us, especially for something that is essentially a vanity product. At the very least they should offer an option to opt out.

Of course you may not care about your privacy and that's your choice. However, I recommend reading up a bit on that, e.g.:

Opinion | Twelve Million Phones, One Dataset, Zero Privacy

Google tracked his bike ride past a burglarized home. That made him a suspect.

But after 3 years you’re gonna keep paying $17/month, right? After that it would start to be significantly more.

I'm sure there will be a special buyout price and data plan offered after the 3 years of "leasing", that is if I choose to buy it. I will ask about that. 3 years from now I would also assume some price reduction in the tech as well.

And what if I simply don't want the plate anymore after the 3 years and decide to return it? I enjoyed it for the time I had it and that's that. Just like leasing a car.

Mine just got shipped out today, should be able to get it installed this week!

Ordered Mine, I did ask them if the plate malfunction and not because of a physical damage they will replace the plate for free which I expected anyways but I did ask there rep..

Waiting for the plate to arrive it does say installation is set for store will see how far it is. I think rep said something along the lines if its too far they will send someone at my place to install it.

Also Like the subscription as every 3 year you can change the plate.. as it will probably see some wear.. I have seen some complaints where plate got detached so might in fact after subscription is over have them get me a new plate at that time . :D
