All that said, I'm still debating my "spare" strategy. I have a decent quality plug kit but also now considering a "Road Hero" in case it really does go badly wrong. Problem there is no room for it on the journeys where I'd most likely need it

Yes, space is the issue. I completely understand why it is a good idea, but I simply wouldn’t be able to fit it in on the journeys where it would most likely be of benefit.

Now I’m getting on a bit, I also don’t relish the prospect of changing a wheel on a busy road in the dark and cold either.

If you want to torque them up to spec you may even find that your torque wrench doesn't go high enough! 129lb ft. For emergency situations just do them up good and tight... they can be checked subsequently.

Well I went for full winters on 19s and stuck with Michelin.
