I understand and agree with what's been said here. I'm in the same boat - purchased EAP for $5k at purchase and now seeing $2k FSD option.

But can we just all just pause and think of the simple facts? Tesla isn't going to sell something for $2k and shell out $2.5k (or whatever number) to install HW3. The more FSD they sell, the more money they lose? Doesn't make sense.

They're not going to do this just to keep "old" customers happy. In addition, HW3 is going to cost significantly higher than $2k when considering labor time to install. Also consider how many retrofits have to occur - like 20-40k model 3s?

The only logical conclusion is either (1) FSD is only a software update on HW2.5 cars or (2) HW3 costs significantly less $2k which means it's not really worth it anyways. Number 1 seems by far most likely.

For those reasons, I'm waiting on the $2k. I don't believe Tesla is pricing it as such just to jack up the price later. They're doing it because they need the cash now and it'll make them a profit.

HW3 is just a swap of the AP computer. takes ~30 minutes and costs the same as the AP2.5 computer, so not sure why you think Tesla is losing money on the HW/labor at 2k.

I added EAP at the last minute, the day before my delivery. It was not activated at delivery, but a quick chat with the delivery specialist and he called the mothership, and it activated before I even got home that day.

Now, I'm seeing both options (Autopilot + FSD) available for purchase, as if I'd never bought EAP at delivery. EAP is listed in the details for my car, however.

I put in a ticket with support, not holding my breath for a quick resolution.

I bought the Tesla for EAP and for the possibility of FSD in the future. I was willing to wait and pay the $5k if and when FSD became available. I’m very happy for the price drop as it is saving me $3k on something I was already planning to purchase.

Went ahead and pulled the trigger this weekend so I’m hopefully in front of all the people who wait.

The head service tech (not service advisor, the head tech / foreman) told me that the job is a "1/2 day job, including removal, installation, and programming / re programming". I asked him specifically how long this swap took. He said its "fairly easy" but then gave me the quote I provided.

With that being said, I doubt they are losing money on it, but I also dont think they are making a "ton" on it considering parts and labor to install.

That's weird- since nobody at the service centers has ever seen the hardware or done the actual swap yet so it's literally impossible for him to know how long it takes and what if any programming is needed for it.

Meanwhile the CEO of the company, who actually HAS seen the hardware, says it's a less than 30 minute swap.

Elon Musk on Q3 2018 earnings call said:
the only thing that needs to change between cars used today and cars produced in the second quarter of next year is swapping the autopilot computer. And this is a simple change that takes less than half an hour"

He said he has been with tesla for "years" and had done many computer swaps already, just not the HW3 one. Frankly, I would believe the technician doing computer swaps over the CEO of the company who is looking at how long it will take on a spreadsheet, and is also proven to not have a good grasp of time.. (how many times has elon been wrong about something relating to time?).

Seems that the pricing the has been lowered in peoples accounts for at least FSD for 2K is going to go back UP to either 4K or 5K starting Monday. So, it would appear that this SALE is going to end. I’ll bite and put in the 2K now.
Yeah it is awful tempting, considering it'll have the HW3 upgrade included. However I have to arrest impulse purchases and the benefits still do not outweigh the cost for me, even at $2k.

I called Tesla about this today, and they gave me a canned "the website is wonky right now, please wait until the end of the week" statement. I don't think my issue is the same as the general glitches, but rather some flag didn't get toggled on the upgrade page to indicate I already owned EAP. I tried explaining this, to no avail.

I have a feeling it's not going to get resolved before prices go back up (Monday, per Elon) and I'm going to completely miss out.

I'm in the exact same boat. Added EAP with my sales rep the day before taking delivery. It never got activated in my car and it took about a week of back and forth to get it fixed. Website details says I have EAP, but the order page for the FSD upgrade shows $2K for regular AP and $3K for FSD. When I click on FSD, it adds both for $5K.

I'm was on the fence about getting it, but now that the price is going back up I was going to pull the trigger. Looks like I probably won't be able to without a big hassle. I wonder if they can do it by phone instead of a website order.

I asked and they didn't seem interested (or able?) in taking my order over the phone. I think they're getting flooded with calls right now due to the price changes / new models / autopilot page glitches. I'm hoping Elon extends the deadline, as he has in the past when there were website issues.

I currently have EAP, I don't really want to spend another 2K on this non-exist features (FSD), people never purchase anything can get AP+FSD for $5K, we have to spend $7K to match that features? something is not right.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding with all the recent price changes, but I thought that sentiment was why the price is going back up. I totally agree; I already spent $5K on EAP and it doesn't seem fair that someone can now spend $5K on both AP+FSD whereas those with EAP have to pay an extra $2K to unlock for the same suite of features. And I don't buy the argument about early Model 3s needing hardware upgrades justifying the extra cost. Because of the error in the system that makes it think I don't have EAP, the website is giving me the option to buy AP+FSD for $5K on my 11XXX VIN manufactured in March 2018.

I purchased EAP in October 2018. Is FSD available for 6 month old purchases? If so, where is the option on the car's menu? I'm having a hard time finding it; perhaps because I already have EAP.
I found out that the purchase option is only available through the online account. You bring up your car and click manage, then scroll down and click on "autopilot upgrades". Currently, the option cannot be purchased from the car or the app; you have to use your online account.
