2 Model Y or Ioniq 5?

A note to those that are thinking about the Ioniq 5, test drive it for an extensive time. After getting mine, the steering wheel does not extend out far enough for me to be comfortable. This was mentioned briefly in a review of a Canadian wife/husband on their youtube channel and didn't think anything of it. Also you have to lean forward a lot to reach the touch screen. This may make or break the deal for some. I have plans on trading it in either for a Lexus RZ or Genesis GV60 in the future if the price is right. The GV60 is luxury, face recognition for entry, and finger print for driving!

As for the whole luxury argument, don't get me wrong, I was a Tesla "fanboi" for a while but now that more and more EVs are hitting the market, there will be competition naturally and I think Tesla needs to up their game to prevent others from jumping ship. There has been posts that I've seen here and in groups that people will leave once more evs come out. Before someone comes and pulls the "they are sold out till next year" argument, that's because there isn't many ev options out yet but this year (Lexus RZ, Gensis gv60, Toyota, Subaru, and I think Cadillac) and the years to come will be competitive. I bought the Ioniq for the quietness.
I was a Toyota fanboy and I won't buy another Toyota, all their dealers suck and Lexus is still toyota for me . All Lexus are top of the line but I won't give them another penny.,

I Never tried to adjust the steering when I tested the I5 . I will be trading in my highlander for another EV after I get the MY, was still thinking of getting the I5 limited but I'll need to check that steering out. I may wait it our for the CT but If it is as spartan as the origional inside ( no dash display) I'll pass and go wit the Ford.

Want to hear you guys thoughts to see if I’m crazy. I picked up MYP 3 weeks ago to replace outgoing X3 and absolutely love everything about the car. This is my first EV, and Tesla, and my mind is blown. I don’t think I can ever go back to any ICE car. I just get so excited every time I get to drive it, and I don’t think I ever felt this way with any other cars I’ve owned. Now this got me thinking if it makes sense to replace an aging ice car in the household with another MYP. Has anyone done this? Part of me thinking this would be cool to have both MYP because wife and I both love the car. But another part of me is wondering if I would get bored with MY soon and then regret having both same cars. A top contender is Hyundai Ioniq 5 that is 58k out the door, so cost wise it’s about 15k saving after the rebate. But I just don’t love the car, it’s cool and check off many boxes, but I can’t get over the interior because it feels just like any traditional ice car. And there are a lot of little annoyances like still have to use start/stop button, no phone as key, sluggish UI, no wireless CarPlay, no rear wiper, no Netflix on screen and also smaller rear seat and trunk space…etc I think I’ll get bored with it relatively soon and just don’t think it will hold its value once Gen 2 or 2023 Model comes out. Just want to see if any one has gone through similar decision making process, and just decide to switch to EV/Tesla completely. We don’t drive long distance trip so range is not that important to me. Thanks.
I begged my husband to go with me to test drive a M3, he gave in. We had so much fun and fell in love with the car that as soon as we got home, we ordered one! 4 weeks later, we went and picked it up and loved it even more. Fast forward 4 months (October 21), we went and test drove a MY and well, fell in love. So again we got home and placed an order. We are still waiting for it, along with everyone else! But I’m excited to be a 2 EV family 😊

This is exactly my thought process too. I know my MY doesn't have typical features that a $60k car usually has...
I Don't see that. I came from an Audi Q5 Premium Plus and like the interior of the MY LR better. If you want the features that are standard and the performance of the MY, you have to go to the $65,000 plus SQ5 Prestige, more for Sportback styling. And. pay $29 a month to keep most of the tech features active.

It’s a difficult comparison. I came from an Audi A4 quattro. The performance of the Tesla is clearly better. The interior materials in the Audi are generally better but I don’t have a problem with the Tesla and I like the openness. (Ultimately syling is a personal preference anyway.)

The suspension in my MY is awful - probably one of the worst I’ve driven. (I honestly think the ‘95 Ford Escort I drove was better.) Audi has a sporty suspension that handles well but also rides quite well and does a reasonable job of absorbing bumps.

The Tesla has auto pilot, and adaptive cruise that my Audi didn’t have but Tesla’s TACC is among the worst on the market. I don’t know what’s standard and/or subscription based on Audis these days, but aside from the TACC/PB issues, AP works very well on freeways.

Tesla’s maps are good but Audi has CarPlay, so if you listen to podcasts, audiobooks, or use Apple Music then Tesla loses here. You also need to pay for Tesla’s premium data whereas CarPlay uses your cell phone data.

Then there’s the fact that EVs are in general somewhat more expensive due to the materials, so directly comparing price of an EV to and ICE car of the same price will frequently not be equal anyway.

The suspension is the single biggest weak spot on the Model Y. By far my biggest complaint about the car.

If they released a "Luxe" version which was the same as this but with adjustable air suspension I'd upgrade in a heartbeat.

I have had an Ioniq 5 for two months and I love it. I have the limited AWD though. Previously had an S, which I sold because it was extremely unreliable and I was over it.

The I5 is very quiet, and the ride is smooth and solid. The car is still very zippy, especially in sport mode. But even normal mode is fun!

I was worried about the charging network, but it has not been an issue. I drive 275 miles round trip to work (weekly) and no problems charging on the EA network. I am on the 95 corridor though, so plenty of chargers. The free charging is VERY nice.

Lots of nice features that I didn’t have in my S. 360 degree camera, ventilated seats, hud, CarPlay, blind spot monitoring… all good things. Oh, the self parking is amazing. I have used it for both parallel and angled parking. It’s so good!

The HDA2 (Hyundai’s version of autopilot) has been fine for me, but again I’m using it on 95, which isn’t very complicated. I like how it will change lanes for you (I didn’t have FSD on my Tesla so that’s new to me). Also if you drive the speed limit, it will adjust your speed as the speed limit changes, which is kind of cool. I have been driving the speed limit as I’m trying to stretch range (I never drove the speeed limit in the Tesla.)

I like the glass roof with the motorized cover. The glass is far leas tinted than the Tesla so it feels more open. But when it gets too bright, it’s nice to be able to close the cover.

I appreciate the roominess inside.

Range is definitely less, but plenty for my needs, with the charging network.

I really enjoy this car.

I wish I didn’t have to turn it on and off because I walk away from it a lot while it’s running. The U/I is a bit clunky and requires more navigating through menus. Lots of menus….
But it also has some actual buttons which is helpful.

That’s all I got!

To be fair, I like the I5, but really think the EV6 is maybe a little bit better thought out based on what I have seen. I
think they are both great cars on paper. I think Tesla just has more experience and may have less battery issues over the next 10 years that some of the other manufacturers will be dealing with.

Looking at the Bolt as a perfect example.

I think the future of the EV platform looks great. I may jump for an EV6 GT when they come out …. After they are more proven.

Definitely very interested in the EV6 GT. The Ioniq 5 drives more like a fat sedan and the EV6 is basically a hothatch. If you are driving more highway miles the Ioniq 5 might be better...

Good to see more EV choices - I'm finding my Y too small and there's simple no midsized/large SUV EVs out there except the Model X and that's not overly big either. On the flipside, there should be more subcompact EVs for city commuting - like the MINI Cooper SE.

May have less battery issues? That's like the understatement of the year lmao.

LG the supplier for Hyundai/Kia, is now under the scope of NHTSA for battery fire recalls from FIVE different brands of cars. LG has hit the damn jackpot for fail.

I've typically owned Japanese cars in the past. For example, a $48k Acura RDX will have HUD, ventilated seats, 360 camera.

The way I see it, I am risk averse when buying a new car because I typically buy a car and keep it until it falls apart - 15+ years at least. To give you perspective I'm 50 and I've only owned 4 cars between me and my wife. That being said, I felt Tesla was the least "risky" EV to buy because of their experience. The MY is far was a v1.0 product, whereas the other new EVs are a v1.0 product that all know will have lots of bugs. That's true of any software product.

Just rented Subaru Outback on a trip and I’m really impressed by the car. For something cost half of MYLR I think this is a great alternative. Got great mileage, big screen, apple CarPlay and huge trunk space I think this checks off many boxes as a family car. Very impressed!
If you buy another ice car instead of EV you doing it wrong!

We have a Subaru Forester and have been very happy with it. Of course it doesn’t have nearly the performance of my MY - the best way to describe the acceleration is ‘mushy‘ - and it’s an ICE car, but it’s a sold car. It’s hard to compare space but between my MY and Forester the MY has more space, especially when you add the Frunk. Subaru does have an EV but it’s range is something like 200 miles, so it’s pretty limited.

For those talking about the Subaru, they are releasing one this year that is EV along with a toyota SUV. Alex on Autos on youtube did a review on one I believe. If that qualifies for the $7,500 that's a no brainer.
I believe you’re talking about the Solterra that I referenced earlier - here’s an article about it:

Carplay and AA are something I really miss from the Tesla. Some will say ventilated seats but I could care less about those. I wanted to do the same thing but my wife doesn't like the Tesla (sits to low to the ground). We have a Rivian R1S on order for her. I don't see how you can get bored with the Tesla honestly...it is a blast to drive and I love mine every time I get in it. The ioniq 5 or EV6 might be tempting if there was a significant cost savings but with the dealer markups they just aren't doing it for me. The EV6 GT with 576 HP will be interesting when that comes out and we may see an Ioniq 5 N model with similar performance but until then MYP is the way to go IMO. If performance is not that important and also if the dealers weren't marking them up so bad then the RWD Ioniq 5 or EV6 might be a good deal. It would be extremely difficult for me to go to something with lower performance.
The dealer markup is annoying indeed but the 7.5k federal rebate is so tempting... And if you're in California the rebates add up to almost 10k.

Yeah here in NJ I found dealer would sell at MSRP, but that’s a bit misleading once i got the order sheet. Basically Hyandai adding those accessories like floor mate as factory installed package so you don’t have any choice to not take them. And then there’s jacked up doc fee from dealer. So it is a BS ‘ MSRP’ vs Tesla’s straight forward pricing, so push price to over 58k. I know Tesla would hold value, but not sure it this car really worth 58k.
Yeah, I've seen dealers over here have something called "NW Protection Package" for $5k. When I asked them what it was, they said underbody coating... I pointed out that the warranty booklet explicitly said that underbody coatings will void the corrosion warranty, as it blocks necessary drain holes. Dealer refused to sell car without it, so I walked.
