Hello everyone,

I noticed a few threads asking what you get for the $20,000-22,000 battery replacement when out of warranty. You can find that answer below as the battery was replaced in an out of warranty 2012 Model S (P85).

Not sure what you're trying to assert here... The cost **IS** over $20,000.
That this service was given a credit of over $6300 does not have any implications for any other owner or any other car.
If the price were ACTUALLY $15,000 (which is still economically totaling most of these cars) then the invoice would not have any discount applied.

Maybe they did it because the car is a Signature. Maybe they did it because there were really awesome donuts in the trunk. There's any number of explanations... but the price, clearly stated on the invoice, is $20,000 for the battery alone. In fact, I get $20,333.80 for parts alone, plus whatever labor would really have been.

Okay gotcha -- wasn't meant as an accusation, merely a request for clarification. I saw others in different thread (might have been Reddit) who WERE asserting, without proof, that the discount represented a core charge and was therefore available for any owner. I think that's a big leap to make based on one invoice (and still a horrific repair expense representing about 50% of the car's value), but it would be better than $20,000.

I really hope Tesla realizes sooner rather than later that pack repair/replacement costs are directly impactful on not only the residual values of these older cars, but also on future sales and the future of long-term EV ownership in general. As the fleet ages, these kinds of invoices are going to become easy fodder for all sorts of agendas, none of which are good for Tesla or EV adoption.

I didn't take it that way either, so no worries. I just wanted to make sure you understood where I stood on this topic. Any time that someone gives a personal experience, I just as well assume that "my mileage my vary." Life is situational.

Re: Core charge - Yes, I have shared this receipt on another thread talking about how expensive the batteries can be. Some suggested that the core charge was $15k (on a $20-22k invoice), and others suggest that is where the $6k discount came from. Thing is, I have no clue at all.

...yes, either way, it's rather expensive for a new battery.

I don't think Tesla is gonna lose any sleep over the cost of batteries. They have already began making their cars more accessible to the middle class, but yes from a "used vehicle" perspective, it's crazy. Everything you have to replace is leaps and bounds more expensive on this car than say a Toyota, Honda, etc. Fixing the sunroof on this ($2k invoice) is about the cost of a transmission or engine in a 4 cylinder commuter car (at least when I was a kid).

So yeah, in short...that invoice sucks (but at least I didn't fork the money over).

I’m trying to decide if it is worth paying what Tesla is asking to replace my battery that is out of warranty as of 12/03/2020... they tell me that my battery complaints over the past 6 months or more have nothing to do with the battery failure, how do I dispute it. I feel like I’m painted into a corner I’d rather not be in $15k with a $3k goodwill credit, so $12k hit to my pocket for a car with only a remanufactured battery warranty 4 yr / 50k mile

The previous owner paid for it (out of warranty, of course). You would be buying a NEW battery when you pay out of pocket, so there's that...still a hefty pill to swallow.
 
A NEW Remanufactured Battery, if it was brand spanking new the decision would be much easier, but they tell me $20-30k for one of those

To be clear, they are telling you $20k for a remanufactured battery? That does not seem right considering that you can see in the invoice I shared, that's a brand new (as in new new) battery for the same price (more or less).

I wasn’t told $20k for a remanufactured battery, I was told $15k with $3k goodwill adjustment, making it $12k. I will ask if I can get a brand new battery with the $6k adjustment and get a brand new battery for $2k more

I thought tesla were out of 90Kwh pack at least the new ones. Is that a 100kwh pack limited to 90kwh? Either case the receipt doesn't indicate remanufacture or new so I would make sure you know which you get. I say if you are to pay $15K for the replacement, the replacement better be a new pack. Don't want to keep paying $15K every 4 years instead of the 8 as expected now.

after dealing with this for a few weeks now, I was told this morning that there are no new 85kw packs and my only choices for a new pack were a 75 (for $21k with same 4 yr/50k warranty) or a 100 (which would cost more and they would have to verify if it would even fit). Since my car is a 2012 I was told not many of the newer packs would fit.

Even though I feel like Tesla should have done more and I’ve been painted into a corner, which I absolutely hate... I told them to go ahead with the remanufactured 85kw pack replacement. They already ordered it and have it at the SC, they knew I didn’t have any other option, ugh!

I am going to request all previous service records and any diagnostics they will provide me, try and find a HV battery specialist to review and depending on findings try and recover some of the cost through legal means.

So, they are looking to charge the same amount for the 75 battery as they did with the 85 battery? Hah.

Very curious, can you post exactly how much they want for the 100 battery?

Pretty sure that others have documented at least two other options (in other threads), so you do have other options. Check out this thread as I think the other options are listed here.
