2012 Tesla Model S P85 Center Mirror

The mirror assembly came off the windshield without warning and was hanging out. Tesla says it's not 'serviceable' and the entire windshield needs to be replaced which I think is ridiculous. I disconnected the dimming cable and found that the metal plate attached to the glass came off just like that. No idea how it happened. I bought an adhesive to stick it back to the windshield but before I do that, I need to get the metal plate off of the assembly first. I saw in one of the youtube videos that by turning the mirror stump counter clockwise, I can remove it from the plate. But I couldn't do it with bare hands (with gloves on as well).

Is there way I can get this metal plate off? What tools should I use? A plier? Please advise. Thank you.
