2013 Model S rear door opens by itself : I removed it and all cables/gear look fine. Need advice

I'll try posting pictures and video from my Iphone in the next post. I just changed the pivot gear on my front passenger door handle but this one puzzles me as it works fine but opens the door by itself (even if I'm not around the car) or whenever I open another door. Thanks for your prompt help on this matter as I want to fix this issue asap.

Here are a few pictures. If you need more let me know. I’ll also try to link a video.

What year is your S? What vintage are your door handles? When the Model S handles extend, they are supposed to stop just before hitting a microswitch. When you reach into the handle & pull, you move the handle outwards a small distance and it closes the microswitch which opens the door. If the microswitch, handle, gear et al are out of alignment, then that door can 'spontaneously' pop open when doors are unlocked.

I believe that newer revisions of the Model S handle mechanism (there have been many over the years) have changed the wiring and microswitch and use a different mechanism.

Maybe search this site for relevant posts about Model S handles.

Hi, Thanks for your insightful answer. November 2013 and original A handle (1030285-S0-A) .
I did search everywhere about this but with no luck for this specific issue. You bring many very interesting possible solution routes. I know how to ajust the gear but am not familiar with the microswitch position adjustment. If at all possible, could you give me any more insight about ajusting the microswitches? Thanks again.

My 2018 did the same thing, and the micro-switch was somehow misaligned. Unfortunately I don’t know how the tech resolved, but it took mobile service 2 hours and multiple part replacements before they figured it out.

Interesting. Thanks. That looks like what is happening with my handle. Maybe someone else will chip in with what needs to be done. I’d rather fix it if possible as, while looking around for a solution, I read that the most recent revision(on 2012-2020 models) is more difficult to repair(when the pivot gear breaks). Thanks once more for your time and transfer of knowledge.

Sometimes the distance of 1 microswitch is to narrow and needs adjustment. What happens is that the handle comes out and normally you pull the handle and the microswitch make contact but now the handle comes out and the microswitch will make contact so the door opens before pulling the handle.

Just set the adjustment screw behind the left microswitch 1mm more away from the microswitch (picture 6) and retry.

Super. Thanks so much. I’ll try that and let you know the result. I am so grateful to all of you who take the time to share your knowledge. 🙏
Curious if this fixed your problem. I’m having the same issue now. The door handle is presenting at 100% causing it to open on its own. When I close the door it goes back in to slightly. It’s just the initial presentation that causes the issue.

Yes it sure did fixed it. I meant to post a quick video of the procedure but forgot about it. I’ll do my best to send it later today. Good luck
