2014 Model S Drive Unit Whirring

I have 2014 P85+ Model S with 105K miles. Runs good. I have typical whirring of drive unit at low speeds that diminishes at higher speeds. Tesla technician says I should start to think about a new drive unit. He says it is ok for now but should replace it when whirring gets a lot louder. I read the posts on bearing pitting. So what is the reason for replacing drive unit? Is it just the noise. Will it just stop working. Does anyone know how many miles are left on the drive unit. He quoted $6k for new unit. I do get some vibration at higher speeds when accelerating and some clunks when starting out or backing up. Any advice?
