2015 Model S 85D after 5-6 months...

So I bought a great condition 2015 Model S 85D a few months ago for about $23k (plus $8k in incentives for used cars under 25k...so around 15k after incentives) that had around 50k miles. It has a 1.0 FSD computer, MCU2 (added later) , dual charging (added later, I did this by myself with a few tips from people here...saved thousands), new tires, enhanced security (added later), free lifetime super charging, free lifetime connectivity.

So far I've driven it about 1000 miles via Supercharging only, no house charging yet lol. I've only run into 2 problems so far. One of the gears for the presenting door handle broke, so I fixed that...I'm aware I will probably have to eventually do this for all of them, but it's pretty easy...so no problem. The other problem was a corroded fuse near the HV battery, that was replaced.

My experience so far? A huge pleasure.
  1. The 1.0 computer is great for the freeway or if you are stuck in traffic. I've never had so much free time to play air drums in my car :D The ride is incredibly smooth and I've never had to say "OH *(&(SDF" and grab the wheel..
  2. Everyone that rides in it says "Holy crap, this is a lot better than the Model 3"
  3. I also like surprising people by turning on the auto drive...just a little bit of fun.
  4. The MCU1 that was in there originally was pretty sluggish and while the MCU2 is better...you can def tell it struggles with things like Twitch or Youtube. I really wish they didn't use an Atom.
  5. The updates have been great and appreciated. I look forward to them every few weeks even though it's mostly updates and nothing new for my car hah :D
  6. I do wish there was a way to install side cameras in those little areas that the newer Model Ss have them. Would be nice to get recording and all that, but I know it's an old car.
  7. SuperCharging has been great. Only problems I've had are other people parking in superchargers when they weren't supposed to or after they were done charging, just flip the car around. I usually walk to get something to eat when I supercharge, so it works out.
  8. I really love the 3rd party support, basically forums like this. Really saved me a lot of time and money.
  9. Have saved about $1000+ in gas so far, so that's great.

I love the car and I have fun driving it around and I guess that's really all that counts heh.

What’s the range loss on that car being 9 years old

I have a 2014 P85 that drives like a dream. Only one door handle gear and the 12v had to be replaced. I did have an issue with the vents getting stuck closed once but a few hard resets fixed it and it hasn’t come back in 37k miles. Many, many fewer issues than our 2016 Model X… 🤣 literally my only complaint is the unbelievably slow, worse than Bolt above 30% supercharging.

Jeeze, how fast does that Bolt charge? I usually get around 50kWh up to around 60% where it falls off to around 35 until full. I get around 80kWh at 30% and it tapers off evenly - 2013 P85:

Granted 10-40% is much faster; averaged of 96kWh (132 max) here:

Best case you pull up dead and take advantage of the max charge speed for half a second. These are normal charge curves for deep charges. It goes below 50kW@54%, 40kW@70%, 30kW@80%, and 20kW@85%.

The best way to roadtrip is hopping superchargers from 5-30%.

It sounds like you're having a fantastic experience with your 2015 Model S 85D! The combination of the 1.0 FSD computer, MCU2 upgrade, and free lifetime supercharging is a great deal. It’s awesome that you’ve tackled repairs yourself and saved money on upgrades. The smooth ride and positive reactions from others are definitely perks of owning this model. It’s a bit of a bummer about the MCU1’s sluggishness, but it’s good to hear that MCU2 has made a difference. Enjoy those free supercharging miles and keep having fun with the auto-drive features!
