2015 Q1 Discussion thread for Delivery numbers, Earnings Report and Conference Call

What question someone needs to ask next time is what will be the deposit requirement for the Sig/Production versions of the Model 3. I'm pretty sure that even if the deposit is tiny, the current $250M will pale in comparison.

Although Elon is obviously the big draw for all Tesla "events", I think it would serve the company well if JB was more of a presence on the conference calls. JB speaks more of the analysts' language and you can tell that when he does step in to clarify one of Elon's drawn out responses the analysts appreciate it. I'm not saying that analysts shouldn't be smarter or see more of the big picture. But where Elon will sometimes ignore the question and instead answer the question that the analyst SHOULD HAVE been asking (shout out to Elon working over Lovallo to start things off right yesterday!), JB might directly answer the question so the analyst can write the report they already are planning to write anyway, but at least with correct information. When Elon avoids the question these analysts still write that same report but simply fill in the blanks with their own (usually incorrect) assumptions. Definitely not suggesting Elon shouldn't play a big role, but I honestly think we'd see more accurate analyst reactions to calls if JB answered the direct questions and let Elon step in for the big supporting details and "Aha" statements.

I was surprised that there was no mention of the next release of the software. (Version 7 I believe). Elon had mentioned that it will probably be out in June and will include the autopilot features. Last software update, (range anxiety), brought a nice bump to the stock. I think the autopilot will do even more. It would have been nice to have a bit clearer picture on when it will be implemented.

It wasn't mentioned on the call, but in the shareholder letter. Page 2:

In March, we introduced our second significant software update of Q1, enabling new active safety capabilities, adding intelligent range and charge management features, and boosting performance by increasing acceleration and top speed. Additional software updates are scheduled in Q2 that will include more Autopilot safety and convenience features for appropriately equipped cars.

Totally agree.

Pretty sure the next major release would come with X. I would only expect a minor version release until then.

Recently in Amsterdam Jerome announced two updates, the second one being firmware.. relevant for all cars. The first one is out with V 6.2, I wonder what happened withthat second one. they might have something else comming up before V7 :)

I posted a recording in the video's section Opening of Tesla European HQ in Amsterdam, speech by Jerome Guillen Part starting 1.30 is about the two updates.

Yes, the March 2016 will be a car. But right now, today, they may have physical models (clay or 3D printed), more than just digital models but not cars. Or maybe they do?!?!
Design

They are currently at the clay model stage - Tim Urban visited the Tesla Studio and saw the Model 3 clay model - see quote below.

http://waitbutwhy.com/2015/05/elon-musk-the-worlds-raddest-man.html
"I had a chance to visit the Tesla design studio (no pictures allowed), where there were designers sketching car designs on computer screens and, on the other side of the room, full-size car models made of clay. An actual-size clay version of the upcoming Model 3 was surrounded by specialists sculpting it with tiny instruments and blades, shaving off fractions of a millimeter to examine the way light bounced off the curves. There was also a 3D printer that could quickly “print” out a shoe-sized 3D model of a sketched Tesla design so a designer could actually hold their design and look at it from different angles. Deliciously futuristic."
