We love our 2016 75D X with AP1. What a stunning car even with its quirks and odd sounds! And for some time, AP1 seemed to be better than AP2 in our 2017 S...but no more. no question, AP2 is miles ahead, and the HW3 chip upgrade, etc. suggest that the gap will widen in the future. We planned to keep the X well into the future, but are concerned that the X re-sale value might start to really tank when the new chip and functionality comes forward, and the X is stuck in the dusty, dim past of AP1 with no hope an upgrade...We see three paths forward:
1. It is a great car just the way it is, and it will be a great car even when everything else is autonomous...measured from the vast majority of the fleet, it is miles ahead even if lagging the Tesla AP2 bleeding edge. Sure, it is worth a lot less than an AP2 car, but that only matters when you sell it, and we are running it long and hard, so not to worry. Those white HOV stickers do not matter since you work five miles from your house.
2. Sell it the old dinosaur, and get some red HOV stickers with an AP2 Model X attached that has an upgrade path. Avoid the depreciation issue, but pay 40-50 K to do so.
3. Sell the old dinosaur, and...Model Y next year.
