We love our 2016 75D X with AP1. What a stunning car even with its quirks and odd sounds! And for some time, AP1 seemed to be better than AP2 in our 2017 S...but no more. no question, AP2 is miles ahead, and the HW3 chip upgrade, etc. suggest that the gap will widen in the future. We planned to keep the X well into the future, but are concerned that the X re-sale value might start to really tank when the new chip and functionality comes forward, and the X is stuck in the dusty, dim past of AP1 with no hope an upgrade...We see three paths forward:

1. It is a great car just the way it is, and it will be a great car even when everything else is autonomous...measured from the vast majority of the fleet, it is miles ahead even if lagging the Tesla AP2 bleeding edge. Sure, it is worth a lot less than an AP2 car, but that only matters when you sell it, and we are running it long and hard, so not to worry. Those white HOV stickers do not matter since you work five miles from your house.

2. Sell it the old dinosaur, and get some red HOV stickers with an AP2 Model X attached that has an upgrade path. Avoid the depreciation issue, but pay 40-50 K to do so.

3. Sell the old dinosaur, and...Model Y next year.

AP1 is fine still for freeway driving and just the same in all other scenarios where you don't benefit from AP2 anyway. If you like to drive a car, then AP2, 2.5, 3.0+ isn't a huge deal for a while until FSD releases in my opinion. FSD may be a LONG time away, may need much newer hardware depending on regulations, etc.

You won't avoid depreciation with any AP2 car either but you may see less if you buy a used AP2 more recent car over time... that first year or so on any car is the majority. Teslas are no different (actually retain value a little better right now with less competition out there).

I feel it is a good time to have an AP1 or AP2 car for a while. Perhaps in 3-5 years when battery tech is improved, charging speeds are vastly better, perhaps competition will even be more attractive instead of Tesla for your needs/quality as an option. Also we may see the S/X with refreshes inside and out by then.

Tesla seem to be addictive for people to upgrade like iPhones to have the newest tech that really isn't that much different than the last iteration yet, just incremental.

It sounds like you’re looking at a new AP2 upgrade path or a significantly bigger battery. A used for used AP1 vs AP2 X aren’t far off in terms of price. Maybe about $10k.
