In May of 2010, Tesla purchased the Tesla Factory in Fremont, California from New United Motor Manufacturing Inc. By combining top Silicon Valley engineering talent with the best automotive talent within a proven manufacturing facility, Tesla's goal is to accelerate the world's transition to sustainable transportation by building a full line of increasingly affordable electric vehicles.

The Tesla Factory has returned thousands of jobs to the area and is capable of producing 1,000 cars a week. Production of the Model S began in mid-2012. Tesla launched its crossover vehicle, the Model X, in September.
