I have a 2017 100d MS with EAP and FSD from the original build. Will Tesla be upgrading to MCU2 for free since I already paid for it or will they expect me to pay the $2,500 for the MCU2 upgrade?
The way I read their documentation is the MCU1 -> MCU2 upgrade is optional (and $US2,500), but the best time to do it is when they do your HW2 -> HW3 upgrade (free for FSD).
Still haven't seen anyone post that they upgraded from HW2 yet, but Tesla are indicating that they might start doing that in North America in April.
Tesla is stating that you don't need MCU2 for FSD. With MCU2 you will get "improved visualisation" whatever that means. This doesn't mean MCU1 will have no visualization.
My own speculation is that MCU1 will handle visualization as we see it today (including cones and traffic lights) but that Tesla will change the visualization for MCU2 to look more like what it did in their driving demo and for that they will not port it to MCU1 cars.
MCU1/FSD vehicles will evidently not get the improved visualization (stop lights/signs, ...). Since the MCU1 should be able to display those visuals, this is more likely a decision by Tesla to limit new MCU1 development.
We don't know what FSD features Tesla will exclude from MCU1 vehicles in the future.
No it's not, if it was required for FSD then people that paid for FSD would get it for free. Also there was a lady that checked with tesla (supposedly), Bonnie Norman on Twitter
