2018 Model X Build Quality

I'm considering purchasing a Model X but there are a ton of build quality issues reported online. I understand that build quality has improved since initial release but was wondering if there is anyone who has taken delivery within the past couple of months and what their experience has been.

Thanks in advance.

where are u located? i dont mind showing mine. it is a 2017 feb build.

Ha, 8.2017 build.

@ delivery:
No Tow Package
Misaligned FWD
Scratched FWD down to aluminum
Hood dented
Fisheyes in hood paint
Huge defect in rear spoiler paint
Dent/paint defect on rear quarter panel

@5,000 miles or less
Half shafts replaced
Rattling visors replaced
Window regulator replaced
Rear trunk lid motor replaced
FWD weatherstripping is cracked
FWD have started to wear through the clear coat

Still in the shop after 61 "business" days.
Still makes grinding noise on full acceleration. Steering wheel was cocked off center when alignment was done. Trim around drivers side visor was reinstalled incorrectly.

I'm sure I'm missing something, ah... every loaner I've had has had multiple defects. Ghosting windshield, bad CV/half shafts, broken 3rd row seat, FWD with bad sensors. If it were someone else's money it would be comical.

Less than 24 hours since delivery, error on the dash, "Limited A/C and battery cooling". Appointment is half a week away, in the mean time they said driving it is okay but there is no A/C.

OUCH!!!!!!!! I was supposed to pick up mine today but could not make the appointment. Very nervous about this car. My nearest service center is 279 miles away.

True. For some reassurance- I took delivery of a 2016 Range Rover TD6 (diesel version) in November of 2016. It made TWO trips back to dealership 160 miles away on the back of a flatbed truck for issues within the first four weeks! But since then, flawless. But irritating. Have to put in the "diesel fluid" every 4000 miles despite the fact they say it needs it only 10,000. So I am very excited to get the Tesla. I expect a lot of teething issues, kind of like a boat. Always have to do your initial shake-out cruises to "get it right".

Silicone Spray is not the best product to use for door and window seals as it can deteriorate rubber over time. A better product is Gummi Pflege, which is designed to use specifically on these seals. Amazon has it, I've been using this for years.

Thanks, I guess there are various formulations of the silicone spray because I have seen ones to say no recommended for rubber products and the one I've been using for the last 15 years is specifically for that purpose.

We took delivery on Saturday. The X was nearly perfect. Small smudge in the cream headliner in the 3rd row and a tiny scratch on the silver bezel around the touchscreen up front. Otherwise, the vehicle was perfect. We'd waited so long to get the car, I didn't even mention the issues at delivery. Just wanted to take the car home and enjoy :)

I had to refuse delivery of my MX P100D a few days ago due to questionable welds/old mcu. I only got a few pictures before I knew I wasn't going to take delivery (especially after service said they'd just paint over it), but once I saw a few of the welds, I was quite worried about what I couldn't see.

This was on the right passenger entry, the left side wasn't cracked but was of similar quality.

So you can refuse delivery? That’s cool. What are the next steps? Does your wait clock reset again?

I took delivery of my “first” X Dec 2017 - handful of window seals and both FWD seals needed repaired/replaced - but that was it. Car was perfect, no squeaks, rattles or anything else. Only problem was when I took it back to SC to have the seals (and the bad charge port) replaced - the SC Detailer wrecked my X - picking up my replacement tomorrow and am hopeful it is in a good condition as mine was last year. It really was very well put together!

This will be my 3rd Tesla and they always work hard to fix any issues. I would look hard at the rubber seals all the way around the vehicle, use the check list (mark sure to check for the tow adapter and that it is actually installed - some were not done late last year) and check the paint carefully - there is almost always some misalignment in the FWD - it is near impossible to get them all aligned and seated on the seals properly.

Don’t let the forum scare you - the overwhelming majority are in excellent shape.

Ironically, 2 weeks ago I picked up my wife’s new Audi S5 convertible - it had worse paint than either of my Teslas ever had and my wrap guy had to spend 3 days buffing it out - we were closer to refusing delivery of the Audi than we ever were with a Tesla who’s paint is notoriously soft.

Most importantly - smile, take pictures and have fun - go in positive and you will have a positive experience. Go in negative and....

@GOPJEW - how do you know if the seals are bad? On visual inspection or leaking air?
Visual.

Both driver and passenger front doors - the seals around the small windows at the front of the doors were off - they actually ran over and then under the glass in places - some snow melt got in there and actually pushed the little glass out when the melt refroze.

On my passenger FWD the molding had a very small tear at the bottom of the door.

On my drivers side FWD the molding along the rear of the door and the roof line would go UNDER the roof in one place - it had obviously been installed properly but when it was closed at some point the molding partially went under the roof line and became deformed that way (it would have let rain water into the cabin) - this was a big fix as they had to replace the entire glass on the top of the FWD to get at the molding. Really was a weird thing - not a QC issue in my eyes - just a quirk.

The front glass stuff should have been caught by QC - was very obvious.

Cabin was perfectly quiet though - they caused no noise.

That helps. Thanks.

Funny, I got torn apart on a Reddit build quality thread for saying that I have seen brand new Audis with bad paint.

Yes, you'll forfeit your deposit and you can reorder. I placed a new order and the next delivery will be in June, hopefully with less issues.

Seriously? I don't know of any other products where if I put down a deposit to order it, and upon delivery I discover defects, that the deposit wouldn't be applied to a new order. So Tesla can give you a defective product, AND take your money, and that's OK? You placed a reorder with the hope of it being better. Tesla fans are very, very tolerant indeed. I'm a big fan of the Model 3, but in no hurry to get one. I can wait until the quality catches up to most other automakers. I'm the "average Joe" that the Model 3 is aimed at, and will wait until the $35,000 version is available.

I picked up my Red Model X-100-D yesterday in Westmont, Illinois.
It is a gorgeous car. It is my 3rd Tesla. Roadster Sport 785 in 2010 , Model S-85-D in 2015...

I told my Delivery Specialist in setting up the appointment that I had a checklist and I would need
some time with the car. I am 2 hours away from this Service Center - Delivery location.
I think I scared him. He found a tiny scratch on the top of the steering wheel housing.
They will replace the housing.
He found 1/8" x 1/4" hole at the corner of the rear console.
The will be replacing that too.

I am an engineer by trade and worked 40 years in manufacturing and maintaining manufacturing software and CNC
machines. I never would have noticed either of those specks...

I have many crazy hobbies. The X will be routinely driven through mud, water, and all kinds of horrid locations.
For me it is an SUV with the emphasis on the Utility.
It will not have a pretty life but it will always be a gorgeous vehicle.

The glass looks great, the panels look great, I did not measure the gaps, I got the new MCU
and I am very happy. It drives and rides like a dream.

You will love the car too... Please enjoy the 99.99% that is right with these wonderful cars...

Picked up my new MXP100DL today - only minor issues - two window/door seals needed fixed and the trim piece around my big screen was a little off (the glove box button was recessed).

Took delivery and left it at the SC for them to fix the issues - will pick up when finished. Lucky for me I am already driving a loaner X so not feeling the urgency - would rather them get it right than take it back later.

Door alignment was PERFECT!
