2021 MYP Trunk Leak - bad service experiences

Hey all, first post here. I came here for insight since I can't seem to get anything good from Tesla or from the subreddit.

Shortly after taking delivery of my MYP back in September, I noticed that when I drove in heavy rain, water collects along the trunk sill on the inside of the weather seal. I also noticed drops of water coming in from around the sides of the trunk close/open button.

So, I started a long, unsuccessful process with Tesla to figure out what is going on.

1st visit at Toledo, OH Service Center:
The technician told me there is a known issue with trunk leaks. They took the inside trunk panel off and "sealed" it better. They had it for a full day, so I assume they did what they said. They were very courteous and friendly. Unfortunately, the next time I drove in heavy rain, I notice the same water collecting on the trunk sill inside the car.

2nd visit at Toledo, OH Service Center:
After having my car for a few hours, they called me to come pick it up and said that the leak was due to a body panel alignment issue and that they do not do body work at that location. They said I would need to go to Clarkston, MI location for repairs.

1st visit at Clarkston, MI Service Center:
After having my car for about an hour, they told me that they could not identify any leaks. They said that sprayed "an Amazon amount of water" on the trunk and did not see any leaking. They said it was probably just from opening and closing the trunk after it rains. To me, that doesn't make sense, as there was water coming out from the trunk button.

2nd visit at Clarkston, MI Service Center:
They had the car for maybe 15 minutes before they escorted me to the service bay to show me this "Amazon amount" of water they sprayed on it, which was just a garden hose. They said I should just keep a rag in the trunk and wipe it up when I see the water. They could not explain why there was indication of water coming from around the trunk button.

Now that I have driven the car through the winter, I noticed that there is a ring of salt all around the trunk button. I have a hard time seeing that as normal. My concern now is electrical problems with the trunk button if water intrusion is present.

I have a 5th appointment tomorrow (3rd at Clarkston) and they are trying to charge me a $26 diagnostic fee to look at my trunk lid again!!

Does anyone have any tips for this situation? Experienced trunk leaks and actually had Tesla fix them? I'm at a loss at this point.

Thanks in advance for the advice!

I have the same problem, out here in SoCal. Tesla service center can’t seem to find the problem. Tesla has replace the seal twice. Yesterday March 28 we got hit with heavy rain and it was leaking again. The car was park too. I’ll take pictures once the sun comes out.

UPDATE

I had my 5th SC visit yesterday, 3rd at Clarkston. They finally acknowledged that there was a leak. I guess the salt stains swayed them. It was also a new guy that I talked with about it. He was the body repair technician. I was there to also get my back bumper estimate (got hit while i was parked in a parking lot at work). He said he had looked at the photo I posted and that they had just fixed a similar leak last week. He said it was likely a gap between the trunk panel and the passenger brake light enclosure. They had it for almost 3 hours. We will see if they actually fixed it. It sounds like they did the exact same thing as the very first visit.

I gotta give them credit this time, the new guy I talked to did not treat me like I was an idiot. He was great!

@EFS83 I'd like to see the pics. I had that issue as well. The car standing still, parked in the rain, still leaked.

I have this leak too. I noticed the water in the trim but since it was bordering interior/exterior I wasn't totally sure it was a problem.

Last night it rained hard while I had my car out. Today, ~18h later I went to the garage and opened the trunk. As it tilted upwards I heard a ton of water slosh and then pour out from the top right of the rear glass, down the frame past the passenger brake light. I'm guessing about a liter. I am pretty sure the trunk was catching and holding water (quite well) and slowly leaking it into the interior via the trunk stops and close button like how your photos show. I'm going in for service this coming week.

We had this on day 1 of our MYP, drove home in a torrential rain storm.
Also had water rush out from the driver side passenger door when opened.

Made a service appointment, all gaskets replaced and no more water.
Some things you will never know until it rains.

My trunk has a similar leak with water coming through the bumper stop and close button. All the SC wants to say is that it is fixed when it is not. SC replaced the rubber seal (which like I told them was not the problem) and of course did not resolve the leak that is in the lift gate not seal. Please share the fix so I can tell the SC what to do.

BTW I was rear ended in my 3 and it took 6 months to fix and then 4 months to figure why it was leaking. after many parts unrelated to the leak, they replace the lift gate since it was bent to allow the leak.

My car 3 weeks old. Opened trunk after being away for a week (it did rain a couple of times) water poured out from black tailgate stopper. I could hear the water sloshing around. Trunk bed was damp and papers were wet and mold already started growing on the spare charger set. Got first appointment I could for next week. Hoping this is something they will acknowledge and fix! 🤞

My Austin built Y is in today for service. I talked to a neighbor that is a service tech for Tesla. He looked at the car and ordered a new hatchback window. They are going to do a water test to determine if it is the seal or the glass that is causing the leak. The car is garaged and I only noticed the leak when it was left out in heavy rains. Water was dripping out of the hatchback rubber stoppers. In fact one was loosened about half way out so that makes me think this was a known issue before I got the car!

Got the car back on Sept 26th. It was determined that the back driver side light that is mounted on the hatchback was the issue. It was remove and resealed. Then is was water tested. No issues since.

holy 💩!

Sorry for my delayed update. I had my first appointment at Norwell, MA service center on 9/20. After the customer support person told me in the morning they would replace my seals, I came back in the afternoon to find out no repairs were completed. All they did was vacuum and dry the water out under the trunk. They did a light water test and extreme water test, but could not duplicate the issue. I had picture and short video of exactly where the water was coming from, but they couldn’t find the problem??? I told them that many others (based on this forum) have experienced the same issue. I never got to talk with an actual tech, just a service rep. They told me ‘if’ it happens again, just drive right to a service center so they can see the issue right away, even if I don’t have an appointment. Looks like I will be following in @BSkando five step process.

BTW took delivery on car 8/24 (vehicle wrapped 8/24 – 8/27), happened week of 9/11! There was an extremely heavy rainstorm during the week. Do I need to check lemon laws in my state? I love the car but wouldn’t expect this experience with a brand new luxury brand vehicle.

Same problem here. 2022 Austin MY, delivered on 9/21. I was also in Norwell yesterday, Oct 5, for service. I submitted the same type of photos with water pooled up around the bottom trunk seal. The car was there the whole day.

Rained heavily last night after I got home. I opened the trunk and water comes streaming out of the trunk latch and both of the rubber stoppers, soaks the back of my head. After the water drained out, I unscrewed the rubber stoppers which were barely screwed in to begin with, couldn't really get a good look up inside. Whatever fix they applied yesterday did not work at all.

I'm not sure exactly how they expect us to drive right to the service center if it happens again, the water drains right out when the trunk opens. I'll try to be ready to take a video next time it rains. Discouraging problem. Please let us know if anyone gets any more answers.
