One thing is for sure, we are going to see more change in the auto industry in the next 4 years than all of the past 100.

3 EV competitors coming from China:

    Faraday Future
Forget Faraday Future’s Crazy Concept Car. It Has Bigger Plans
Faraday Future's next electric vehicle, a first sneak peek
(Note, despite their showing of the bat mobile at CES, their first production will be a Crossover / SUV)

    LeEco (parent of Faraday)

Move over, Tesla: Chinese firm behind Faraday Future unveils 1st sedan-type electric vehicle

    Tancent
Top BMW electric vehicle engineers defect to Chinese rival backed by Tencent

It may be that LeEco and Faraday, since they're related, will play out some kind of Toyota/Lexus positioning. For now it looks like one will be showing a sedan to compete directly with the Model S, while the first auto from FF will be a Crossover.

Then we have Google and Apple.

Wake up call if ever there was one.

Competition is good. Elon welcomes more EVs on the market. But those companies have a ways to go.

So, they are where Tesla was 10 years ago. Welcome to 2006, guys.

Making a car is easy. You can always drop the ICE hardware and stick in a battery pack. It wouldn't work all that well since the shapes and positioning is wrong but you'd have an EV.

Getting the vast amount of batteries necessary to go up against Tesla is the hard part. Tesla is doubling the world's supply of batteries for a meager 500K cars. It already looks like they are going to need another factory just to cover the demand for the Model Y when Tesla finally brings it to market.

Designing a competitive car is the easy part. Making it work logistically and functionally will be the hard part. Tesla has a decent lead on everyone else. The key is to watch for battery factory expansion from competitors.

Yeah, I just find it interesting that there are 3 Chinese backed projects jumping on board, being somewhat proactive with teasing the public. Getting the eco-system they will need to match (battery production, charging locations, sales and maintenance structure, etc)... they've got a long way to go. And in the marketing department?! Oy! As witnessed by FF's pitch at CES (showing a car they have no intention to every produce)

Meanwhile crickets over at Chrysler and vague talk at Ford. That's the wake up call I'm talking about.

Good luck with that. Not everything can be reverse engineered. Tesla doesn't worry about competition from Google and Apple. Everything else is just noise.

The only successful Chinese backed automotive company outside of Asia is Volvo...and only because they don't have a heavy hand in it.

I wish all projects well, of course.
