I was at Santana Row again today (I live 2.5 miles away) and saw a black Model S pulling out onto Winchester as I was in line to turn in. I asked the Tesla product specialist about it and they said it was #3 with cloth and that it is to be used for training techs on tear down and rebuilding. It's not to go on sale to the public. Maybe in the future it will be in a museum.
Oh, and the specialists said they got to drive it and (of course) they were impressed. One of them said he drove a roadster before and the Model S is much more refined as well as the fit and finish is much better. We'll need less biased reviews of course but even biased reviews are nice to hear.
We have to be careful when we start throwing sequence numbers around... Beta #3? Founders #3? Signature production #3?
Tesla showroom folks have no problem with people snapping pics of the VIN on their display models. Lots of folks on the forums like to collect/decode the VINs, who could answer this question in seconds.
