351 Mile Range!

Perhaps more importantly is does this "increase" in range actually give you more range or does it manipulate characteristics so that it does better in the EPA testing?

More like the previous range was understated. Remember when the model 3 LR RWD first came out? a lot of people were getting way more than the advertised 310 miles at the time. then a software update gave everyone like 325+ miles with zero hardware changes.

Where in the vehicle menus can I check what the stated range off my Model X is?

No where directly.

You can look at where your reference line is on the energy monitor. Divide that number into 100KW and you’ll get approx EPA range. It’s not easy to read that number because it’s not labeled with a value. I think mine reference is around 300 wh/mi. 100,000/300 = ~333 miles range. Very close to the 328 range.

You can charge your battery full and it will show approx EPA range (which expect will change once the update is out for cars that have said improved hardware).

There are more accurate ways to see battery capacity via CANBus monitor.

You can slide your charge limit to max in the phone and it will show approx full battery. Minus any degradation.

My Dash says “Long Range” I assume upgrades cars that will show “Long Range Plus”.

My suspicion (quite possibly wrong) is that this is mainly to do with changes to EPA rating methodology used in the USA. Here in the UK Tesla quotes WLTP rating and ever since Raven MX was introduced the Long Range has a quoted 314 mile WLTP range. Even the order form today for delivery in May does not have an LR Plus but only the LR, still with 314 miles. If there was an upgraded battery or other hardware I would have thought this would be reflected with us being able to order an LR Plus in the UK and there would also be a lot of publicity about it.

This got posted over on Tesla forums. I’m adding here for discussion. I don’t think T can change monroney stickers like they do software....

Stop the presses!

The dealer just called me again and said that Tesla just sent out a new letter and list and my car is on this list. But they will hold it locally until Mar 7th when they will do they update and change the MonRoney sticker to say LR+.
So it looks like I get the sticker change after all and get my car in two weeks.

My advisor called me to schedule delivery of my LR+ that I ordered on 2/14 for a delivery Monday 2/24. He literally called me a minute later saying he goofed and was told all S and X are on a containment hold right now and the earliest they can deliver is 3/8 so they can complete necessary firmware updates to extend the range. They can’t even deliver any inventory vehicles right now from what he is telling me.

I ordered the MX LR on Feb 4 and got a VIN on Feb 14, the day the website changed to LR+.
My cars Birthday was the day before: Thu Feb 13 14:33:54 2020

After pestering my dealer to find out if my car has long range PLUS and her saying she is 'pretty positive' it does but not able to get proof, I told her today I was going to order a new LR+ and I would not cancel my prev order until I either got an arrival date on the new car or further info came along proving my original car was a PLUS.

She later called back and sheepishly said - Tesla sent an email out today and though more info would be forthcoming, they included a list of cars that were LR+ and my car was not on the list.

So she said she can change my order to a new LR+ and I should expect it in about 3-4 weeks. Basically she saved me a $100 cancellation fee. Now the website says 4-6 weeks so it may take longer than she thinks but at least I will have what I want.

So beware that some very recent cars may not be LR+ . If you are expecting delivery soon, check with your dealer and make sure your car is on the new LR+ list if that's what you want

But where is the extra range coming from? Updated battery and if so how is it updated, increase motor efficiency, improved regen, etc? I find this all rather strange and still suspect a change in EPA methodology. Why in the UK where we use a different range methodology (WLTP) do we have no mention of an LR + even n new orders for delivery in May?

Not that it applies to performance models. But do they share the same pack part numbers or do they differ. I have a raven perf model with the date 6/19 that has a E for the last letter of the pack of that helps anyone. So I would assume that not all raven long ranges would get this update then.

the bugaboo about post 3/7 deliveries is that Model Y will start delivering 3/15, leading to what I suspect will be a very busy delivery season!

I did ask about that, but I'm guessing 2 weeks of Model S/X LR+ deliveries won't take more than a few days at most stores given their lower volume. I was already scheduled a March 7th delivery for my MS LR+ that just caught the deadline - original delivery date was on the 22nd.

So Tesla has been much more on the ball the last couple of days. One of the local delivery specialists called me early this evening and gave me the straight talk on what's going on with the Model X's and S's:

1) cars are still being delivered to the SC locations, not being held in California, however...
2) they won't be delivered to customers until the software /firmware release comes out, so they can apply it to show the official new range and the Long Rang Plus model name, as well as update the Monroney sticker (the SC's have the ability to print them out). They want all recent purchasers to be happy and have an official record that while they ordered the "old" model, they got delivered the "new" model,
3) any X / S ordered "recently" is in this "containment hold" process, and
4) the current ETA for the software release is March 5th-7th (apparently they keep oscillating the release date between these two dates)

I feel a LOT better about this now. I also visited a showroom today (near the SC) here in Plano and one of the guys spent a good 20 minutes showing me all kinds of cool features about the X. March 7th(ish) can't come soon enough!
