4K Cameras on new Model S?

I can’t see any reason they’d want them to be 4K. More pixels to crunch isn’t necessarily a good thing for real time image processing.

+1, this isn't a consumer TV, it doesn't need 4K for anything.

For TeslaCam, that 4K might show some detail you might need ... I for one welcome our 4K overlords!

Generally you want lower resolution for the kind of real-time computer vision that Tesla is doing.

I'm sure if they are 4K cameras they can request a lower resolution stream for say the auto pilot and perhaps a higher resolution stream for backup cameras and TeslaCam, etc.

But 4K sensors aren't much bigger than HD sensors so something else may be going on ...

In general the number of camera are more important that 4K resolution in cars for faster algorithm processing and 360 degree surround coverage. In surveillance/dashcam /sentry situation 4K makes a difference, but not so much for autonomous driving.

That video showing the need for a camera near the front of the car to look around obstacles basically says it all. They're going to need that angle for obstacles near intersections as well as intersections with obtuse or acute angles

Then why isn't this new setup on the Model 3 refresh?

No idea... knowing Tesla to sell people a car now and say OOPS! We thought we had everything we needed with HW3, but we're now announcing HW4. No, we can't retro... you'll just have to buy a new car. Like HW1 was supposed to come pick you up at your front door and park itself... Like HW2 and HW2.5 had enough power for FSD....

The specs and angles on the current cameras are known. They have a hard time seeing oncoming traffic in certain situations. Hence the "creeping out for traffic"... it can't see without moving forward, in some cases all the way out into the intersection.

Well...you can go from AP2.0 to 3.0. Replace side repeater cameras with color versions. And get the FSD computer upgrade.

I doubt the lenses are good enough to resolve more detail with more pixels and you'll hurt nightime image quality unless you increase aperture which will narrow focal length.
