Mmm. Interesting... if he had let the wheels turn, he might have had enough control to steer to the right of the other car. On the other hand, he might have ended up picking up quite a lot of speed going into that junction! Or hit the other car harder.

Not easy to make those kind of judgements at the time!

Easier said than done for folks but if you’re just sat on the brakes and the car is sliding you’re just a passenger. If he’d let the wheels turn he ought to have had some control over the car.

I don’t think he would’ve picked up any more speed personally. His braking was not doing anything there.

The worst feeling ever is sliding down a hill with your foot flat to the boards on the brake, last thing you think about is lifting off to try and steer. Bellend with the camera should of warned them there was a car already stuck but as usual think its a laugh at someone elses expense which ultimately costs us all money in insurance increases.
Was their journey really necessary you also have to ask?

Absolutely, The MPS4 are terrible for obvious reasons.
The carpark at my work got cleared of cars as that was happening to me and we couldn't predict where I would end up!

There was absolutely no need for him to go down what is probably the steepest road in that area. Plenty of less steep roads parallel to that one or he could have gone a wee bit further along the main road and avoided slopes all together.

Yes, brakes are the enemy in a situation like this. Stirring and trying to control using the accelerator is what he needed but like you say without experience doing it you'd never think of it.

I lived in Norway for 5 years and had to do winter driving to get a licence over there. The golden rule was never to touch your brakes. Although it goes against the grain if the wheels lose traction touch the accelerator a bit to bring the wheel speed up to match road speed and get a grip.
