I had hoped to skip Gillette but the weather stole my entire 30% buffer from Sheridan to Custer.
Yes I got hammered by rain from Bozeman to Moorcroft. These highways don’t seem like they are designed for it. Lots of pooling of water in even moderate rain. Had to drive real slow which isn’t fun in these parts. The Moorcroft to Custer leg is dry so far at least. I’m around Osage now.

I’ve had my MX for a little over a week. I picked it up in Chicago and drive it to my childhood home in Rapid City, SD. It was so exciting to see so many Tesla’s driving into Custer as I was driving back to Rapid after having lunch with family. Enjoy your time in my childhood home. The weather may hamper some of the festivities but hopefully you will still see some of the beauty of the Black Hills. I just heard about the event. Unfortunately, I have family commitments on Saturday and will be unable to attend. I will be in Custer though. I’ll be excited as I’m driving through the “hills” seeing all of you. Drive safely. My MX is safety tucked away in the shed at my mom’s ranch. Anyone coming through the Badlands will pass us on HWY 44 close to Scenic.

I can't seem to find the event schedule anymore. Maybe it was on the registration page which is no longer up and running. Can someone remind me, we are supposed to register today at the Chamber of Commerce right? When do they close? I think it was 4pm or 4:30pm.
Duh. Just noticed post #43 in this thread. I knew I had seen the schedule somewhere! Thanks @Big Earl :)

Anyways I'm here now. Arrived at the Chamber of Commerce at 4:00pm on the dot and they were closing up but let me in anyway :) And yes, they said you can now register at the mixer which runs from 5-7pm at the Mount Rushmore Brewing Company.

Saw a news story reporting 85 Teslas at the Rally, up from 55 last year.

About 50 miles away in Sturgis, they usually have over 500k attendees — and over 750k in 2015 — for their little week long motorcycle get together in August. Though officially brand-neutral, it is mostly a rally celebrating all things Harley Davidson with large quantities of alcohol mandatory, clothing optional and tattoos suggested.

It took about thirty years for Sturgis to catch on in a big way. So if Tesla doesn’t go broke in ten months my grandkids had better start thinking about accommodations in or near Custer for the 2050 Rally.

Small world. I have tons of family who have ranched near Scenic for more than 100 years. I think the population of Scenic topped out at about 200 around eighty years ago, so we are probably almost related.:)

Snow falling in town. :D

Saw a few flakes at the top of Needles earlier. Not sticking yet, to much rain prior. Watch those summer tires, if you have them. Down near 0C they start getting firmer & about A/S equivalent.

FYI those planning on heading South via Sidney etc, south of Chadron very active snow, temp down to 1C so at the edge of starting to accumulate.

By Alliance it’s still cool but only scattered cloud, moon is out, and road dry.

I'm not complaining about the date personally, but I saw quite a bit of chatter about not being able to go when kids are in school.

There are two sides to this story however. I'm sure from the city of Custer's point of view they want us to come prior to Memorial Day. I'm guessing they have no problem attracting tourists on any weekend between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Also the hotels would be more expensive if we did it during that period. If our only concern is weather, perhaps mid-September would be the optimal time. But that doesn't really help the school kids problem.
