Or if you are camping in it, some foam underneath to make it flush. I don't expect to either camp in it nor do I need it to be flat, so to me that bump is of no consequence.

I assume you don’t normally load/unload large or heavy items in the trunk?
One of the benefits of the Y was a flat load, meaning you can easily slide in heavy/large cargo. With a dip, it becomes kind of like a model 3 or any other sedan.

It’s so nice to be able to just slide in heavy and large items in our X, and looking forward to having the same conveniences in the Y.
 
Did you get a chance to drive it? Is there really a noticeable detriment to handling as compared to the five seater? And, did it have the coveted heated steering wheel and hepa filter? Thanks a bunch!

I did not drive it - the rep said it wasn’t ready to drive because they had just received it the day before, but I imagine if I went back today they probably have it ready to drive. They did take my driver’s license as if it were a test drive - I assume for liability purposes since I was inside the car even though it wasn’t moving.

I didn’t ask about the heated steering wheel or hepa filter. Have other models come out with this already? I assume these features would be available at the same time regardless of 5 or 7 seats.

I'm curious if the base of the 2nd row moves as a single unit, or if it's split as well? So I could put a shorter kid in one of the middle seats and push that forward, giving the 3rd row more space on one side, but preserving leg room for the teens on the other side.

Did you happen to see if it's split that way?

Yes, the 2nd row right seat moves independently from the 2nd row left/center slide rail. So if you have one person in the 3rd row passenger/right side and one shorter person in the 2nd row single/right seat, they could share leg room while left/center 2nd row can stay slid all the way back giving 2nd row maximum leg room on those side and middle.

The more I think about it and the more I read, it will be great for large families like mine or car pools for younger kids, but even teenagers will probably complain having to sit back there and I would not put anyone back there over 5’2’’.

Since it appears as expected that the 3rd row is not meant for anyone tall by any measure, and it’ll mostly be kids (likely in a car seat or booster), does it really matter whether the 3rd row is heated?


In cold weather and with no vents, heated seats will matter. I assume they’re heated based on the wording on the website, but nobody knows for sure at this point.

That makes sense. As a dad, of course I have to haul stuff. Our Honda minivan is not precisely flat either, but it has worked well enough. If I had to haul lumber (I do some woodworking as a hobby) it probably would not bother me, but a larger, longer box might. In which case I’d put those woodworking skills to use with a 2x4 and some 11/16 plywood and build a removable shelf to make it flat. Probably $20 and 1 hour of time to do it.

I expect I’ll find out soon enough. WOOT!
 
The third row is a great place for children who have grown out of child seats. Child seats should be used in the second row.

So no chance of installing child seats in both rows of the 7-seater? Also, is it possible for someone to enter/exit the 3rd row when (multiple) child seats are installed in the 2nd row? I'm guessing no on that one too.

Sounds like this variant is only going to be useful after the youngest children outgrow car seats and before the oldest get very large. A fairly small window of time.

I'm not surprised, it's actually what I expected. But I am disappointed that I am going to be stuck driving the gas guzzler for a while longer.
 
I was able to sit in a 7 seater yesterday at Fashion Island Tesla Store in Newport Beach. The sales rep told me that because they were a flagship store, they received the first 7 seater on Tuesday 1/12. She took me down to the garage where the test drive vehicles are and they had one white 7 seater with black interior.

First impressions - the third row is definitely NOT for adults. I’m only 5’7’’ and my head almost hit the glass and definitely would hit if there were the slightest bump in the road. It was really difficult for me to squeeze in and out through the second row also. That being said, this will be perfect for our 7 and 9 year olds which is exactly what we’re getting the third row for.

The leg room was very narrow also - you’re basically sharing the 2nd row leg room by sliding those seats forward. The 2nd row has the traditional bar underneath that you can pull and slide into multiple positions. It also has the electronically slide on the bottom/side of the seat and the shoulder electronic slide. In order to slide the seats forward when you’re standing outside the car, you only have to use one hand on the shoulder lever and it slides and then pops up hugging the front seats which is nice. I’m not sure my 7 and 9 year olds will be strong enough to do it, but they’ll figure it out.

It appeared the third row when flat was about 5 inches higher than the rear cargo cover, so there is a little ramp piece they added to the cover as a transition.

Can adults fit in the third-row seats?
As is the case with all three-row SUVs, taller passengers will be most comfortable in the first and second rows. Rare customers who expect to frequently have taller passengers riding in the third row may want to explore the surprising affordability of model X, which offers more space in its third row thanks to it’s larger overall size.

Why isn’t the seven seat configuration available on model Y performance?
This simplifies production as we expect the vast majority of model Y performance customers to continue to prefer the five seat interior, which provides the best handling dynamics - a core focus for these customers. Model Y long range is awfully quick, and it can be made even quicker by adding the acceleration boost upgrade. Model X is also a great alternative for some customers with Ludicrous performance available for seven passengers.

Can a third row be retrofitted to a five seat model Y?
Tesla does not offer this retrofit for existing or new model Y. If customers want the third row, they should order their model Y new as a seven seater.

Does the third row have LATCH attachments for child seats?
No. The third row is a great place for children who have grown out of child seats. Child seats should be used in the second row.

Does the third row have climate control vents?
The third row does not have dedicated vents. However it’s climate is controlled via the first and second row vents. Set in climate from the Tesla app in advance of a drive will maximize comfort in all three rows. Also, the “fresh air“ setting (turning recirculate off) improves airflow to the third row.

Thank you!!!... This would have helped my family need a lot. There are times we did not need to take 2-3 cars when we go on family outings. Perfect for my daughter, nephew and nieces. I can also fit my wife, and sisters with no issues.. They are all small and under 5'4.

I’m betting that by the time the youngest ones won’t fit, the oldest will be in college. So the third row won’t be needed at that point anyway, but it will have served its purpose.

hey everyone, we're in the same boat here with 3 small kids. I personally think the model X is overpriced so I've been waiting on the 7 seater MY. I think I might just wait for the cybertruck.

Anyone else going to wait for the cybertruck? I think given it's size, range & price it's the best bang for you buck.
