The discussion always seems to imply that the car has to take full responsibility of handling every possible situation. Currently we provide freeways which limit the challenges to driving. Minimum speeds are established, fences keep people and animals away, access is restricted, etc. I would not be surprised that we would have something similar such as zones or corridors that are autonomous driving safe. It also might mean that construction Crews place special comes or delineators or follow some special rules to enable autonomous driven vehicles to transit. Overall I think we need to look at the challenges holistically and not try to solve problem just by the vehicle. Any thoughts on how we can solve some of these problems outside of the car. How might AD zones differ to support the rollout of AD?
