A white Powerwall is really going to stand out from my house color; what about painting or wrapping?

My county building department will not allow me to have two Powerwalls installed in my garage. I already have one V1 Powerwall in my garage, have two new ones on order and a May 15 installation date, and the V1 unit will be removed. The county says one of the new Powerwalls has to be on an exterior wall. Don’t ask me why, I don’t know.

My house color is a dark taupe and I’m not keen about the look of a white Powerwall against the house color. Has anyone painted a Powerwall enclosure, or maybe wrapped it? I expect that Tesla will say “don’t do that” just as a matter of course, but I doubt they would void my warranty if I did.

It's just painted metal. I can't see any reason why one couldn't repaint it. I'd use the enamel spray paint one could find at a hardware store in dozens of colors, probably one of which would go well with taupe. Just don't paint over the word "TESLA" or it wont charge correctly. JK.

I'd probably try to mask off the black plastic grilles front and back before painting.

@ecarfan being in San Mateo I would think you're not covered by the Santa Clara County Fire jurisdiction.Take a read of Vine's thread and it will explain what is going on in his area of install, which towns include those covered by Santa Clara County Fire. My town so far hasn't adopted any of these rules that I know of but then even though we just increased our install order to 3 PW (we'll also be a garage install), Tesla had only filed for our solar project portion not the PW install. Our City's permit office is not open so I'm truly hoping we don't fall under these changes (we live in Santa Clara County but not served by that fire jurisdiction).

All these restrictions we are starting to see pop up from various people doing installs is troubling. We have no good outer walls to install PW at as the western sun beats down on the stucco and we know heat like that isn't good for the batteries or electronics (house lots in developments here are pretty small so really not much yard space in general).

Santa Clara County retroactively Changing ESS Rules

Let us know if you get a better explanation from your county's building department on your restrictions. Are you sure with the more restrictive stay-in-place proclamation we are under that Tesla or any installer is able to do installs now? I'm still not sure things will be lifted come May but can hope some outside work might be able to be done I guess.

I like the idea of wrapping it. Then if you ever get grief about it you can just rip it off, and you don't need to disassemble it to wrap it.
What color would you go with?

They come wrapped (in a protective plastic covering you have to peel off). I would just order up some wrap that you like and do it yourself. It should be real easy since it's all flat surfaces.

Yes you will cover up the Tesla decor word but nobody but you will know it's under there.
