But I was only driving for about 15 minutes. Probably only traveled a distance of five miles.
Right now I’m parked with 143mi remaining and the trip home is 88 miles about 1h45m. Any advice?
If wondering about "will I make it back" from somewhere, here are steps to minimize energy loss while parked
1. Plug in where you are parked if able to, even on 120V
2. Make sure sentry mode is OFF while you are parked
3. Make sure cabin overheat protection is OFF while you are parked
4. Dont constantly "check on" your car via the app (this wakes it up, which also uses some energy as it wakes up and starts checking in on its systems etc).
5. Ensure if you have any third party tesla apps, they are configured correctly for sleep (advice for new owners would be to not worry about downloading any third party apps unless you are a "data hound" type person, but if you do, ensure they are configured correctly for letting the car go to sleep.
You should be fine, OP, and just like an ICE car you cant really look at the first miles of a trip as representative of how much the entire trip will use. AC doesnt use much at all (havent measured it but many have). Of course it uses energy but its not bad. its the HEATER that uses a decent amount of energy.
Another note, your car stores and uses energy, it does not store "Miles". The miles remaining that is displayed on the screen is an estimate based on the EPA guidelines, not your trip. Put your trip into your navigation system, and then check the energy app in the car while you are driving (NOT the miles remaining next to the iphone like battery icon.
The car will tell you if you will make it, and if not, will tell you where to stop and charge. It wont let you get stuck, if you listen to it. Its very unlikely that you use 143 miles worth of energy to go 88 miles unless its all uphill, so you should be fine anyway, but if you are going to be parked for a while make SURE you are not running sentry mode, as sentry mode will use about 1 mile or so worth of energy PER HOUR while it is on. You would still make it if you were parked for 24 hours (you would go from 140 ish miles to 115 or so miles), but since you are already getting range anxiety (normal for new owners), that would just cause you more anxiety even though you would make it anyway...
So turn off sentry mode and cabin overheat protection if they are on.
