I'm not 100% certain this is the right sub-forum for this, but it seemed like the best of the available options. I recently came across this video which shows how a typical Adaptive Cruise sees the environment:

I don't know the specifics of the car involved, and the link that got me there didn't help. A few things caught my eye - it loses track of cars while they are still well in front of it, it often has trouble correctly identifying which lane a car is in - let alone following them from lane to lane (ID numbers seem to roll with every lane shift.)
It does seem to be a fairly modern unit - it has no trouble tracking accurately the car in front of the car it is following by bouncing signals (which I think I first saw advertised two years ago?)
