Adding FSD before VIN assignment

Does anyone have any experience with adding FSD after ordering but before VIN assignment? I ordered a P3D+ back on 6/27, fully optioned out except for FSD. However, with the recent earnings call revealing the upcoming hardware 3.0 upgrade, I'm leaning towards adding FSD as well.

That said, my #1 priority is to not delay my delivery at all (current window is Aug - Oct) as I don't want to miss out on the full tax credit and I just plain want my car. Does anyone have any first hand experience with whether or not adding FSD pushes you back in the queue? Does it cost anything beyond the $3,000 option price?

My guess is that if you add FSD, it will change your delivery estimate on your Tesla home page to be 2-4 months from now (i.e. Oct-Dec). It will probably also add $700 to your bill (+$500 for new paint prices, and +$200 for new delivery surcharge).

I suspect that the actual delivery date may not change that much. The delivery date you get on your Tesla account is simply date of last change added to the current estimated wait times for the car you are ordering. I think that there is a second Tesla internal estimate that is more sophisticated, taking into account original reservation date, original $2500 down payment date, location, colors, and maybe even financing or trade in. This is just my theory, so I don’t know if it is true.

If I were you, I would be tempted to wait until you get a VIN, and then call up Tesla and see if you could add FSD at that point without incurring the additional fees.

I added FSD a week or so before I got my VIN. For me, it didn't delay anything. Keep in mind that I was in the last batch of cars before the floodgates were opened, so no idea what it would do now.

Since it is just a software change, it really shouldn't delay anything, but you never know. I say just get what you want. The wait is worth it!

I'm a Day 1 reservation holder, current owner who was invited to configure my 3P+ on 5/20. On 6/26 I added FSD and my "Order placed with electronically accepted terms" on the order agreement changed from 5/20 to 6/26. I am assuming that pushed back my spot because I still don't have a car or even a vin and others in my area have gotten their 3P's delivered already.....unless they aren't building my build yet (3P+, red w/black int, EAP/FSD.

It's not just a software change, right? FSD requires 8 cameras whereas EAP doesn't add the additional cameras.

Now that's interesting. When I ordered, it clearly stated on the FSD section of the page that feature required additional cameras, 8 is memory serves. That verbiage is gone now, however, it still costs an additional $2,000 if it's added post production. That would be for the labor of pulling car apart to install the cameras. Turning on software is an overnight operation.

Both EAP and FSD are software unlocks, the car comes with all the hardware necessary for both (at least as of now, Hardware 3.0 changes things in the near future). The FSD costs $2,000 more (most likely) as an attempt to get people to buy the software upfront, even though there's no tangible benefit to doing so (yet).

Forgot to mention, I did that after calling the hotline and they said “adding after you get a vin, for the reservation price might get tricky...if you want it you’re better making the change now” so, why not.

When did you reserve?
Sorry bout that, I guess technically I reserved/ordered same day. 7/28/2018 , only paid the 2500$.

...which is weird, I had a 3/31/16 reservation that gave me the privilege of test driving the car. Thats what I wanted to do before I ordered. But as we did everything at the showroom I didn’t notice it was done as a whole new order. When I asked about it, sales guy said having the res didn’t matter anymore. I called the hotline and they said same, unless I ordered it before the floodgates. Talked to multiple folks at the hotline and all said pretty much the same thing.
So I’m just leaving my 3/31 res in there until I get my car then I will prob get a refund, or transfer it to Y.

Can't see why it'd be tricky. The explicit terms say it's $3000 if you add it any time before delivery.

You can add it the day you pick up the car for 3k as long as you do it before you take delivery of it- and I've seen folks mention doing exactly that... (which is likely what I'll do so as to not change the configuration and potentially bump myself back in line)

I interpreted “tricky” to mean “how much do you want to discuss changes with your already overcommitted delivery person”.
Yeah at the same time - probably don’t have to ask twice to give them more money.

So, it will be interesting to see how far back I’m bumped.
I also have a different overall perspective - If push comes to shove in Q4 and I’m Tesla, the P’s are all gone...I’m looking for the committed FSD buyers to get margin. Rims and interior still have hard materials cost/avail/logistics where FSD is an entitlement aka gravy.

Either way, I’m curious about your add-on experience. Hopefully all goes smoothly.

I placed my order 8/4/18 - got lucky- they found exact match vehicle 8/6/18. P3D with all options except FSD. VIN: 76...
Tesla’s new Autopilot hardware upgrade will be free for owners with the $3,000 to $5,000 ‘Full Self-Driving’ package
After reading this article I decided to add FSD. I mentioned it to the delivery expert and she said there won’t be any delays as it is a only a software update. Scheduled for delivery 8/18 - 2PM. Will keep you updated.
Curious to know if they charge $3K or $5K "post-delivery" cost.

MaadP, can you tell us more specifics about how you placed the order for the FSD after the VIN?

I haven't gotten the VIN yet (but trade-in, payment, etc confirmed) and when i called Tesla's toll free number and emailed my "Inside Delivery Advisor," BOTH told me that ordering the FSD would for sure delay my delivery.

Was the "delivery expert" the person at the "dealership" where you picked it up? and when exactly did you mention it?

Like you, as soon as I read that the FSD gets free upgraded hardware next year, that caused me to decide to pay for it. I initially didn't order it because i thought FSD was going to be "years" away due to all the regulations, etc.

They said that I could get it as soon as 8/30/2018....... so here's hoping......

I was lucky in the sense Tesla were able match a vehicle exactly I oredered in 3 days. I live in the NW and I got a email from a delivery advisor located at Las Vegas informing me that they have the car ready for delivery. I called her straightaway and talked about how I am paying for the car and delivery date. I mentioned to her on that conversation that I want to add FSD. She said no problem and that it shouldn’t delay delivery. She adjusted the invoice and I could see that in my Tesla accounts page (+$3K) in a day.

Sales guys at the local stores are very helpful till we place the order. After that, it looks like, they have little say.

I would wait till you get a call or email from a delivery specialist and then add the FSD. I hear P3D with black interiors are little delayed. Good luck.
