After 6 months of loving my car, version 8 makes me want to sell it

I'll let you into another secret too....if I have to hold the steering wheel all the time, then there's not much value-add to the feature. Imagine traditional cruise-control where you have to keep your feet on the pedals all the time.

And not only that - you have to pay attention to the road at all times too. And in my case, for the type of driving I do that's why I couldn't justify the cost.
 
My car has punished me! When I use auto-steer, I pay attention to the road, not to the dashboard. So when I missed one of the (now far too frequent) prompts to hold the wheel, I was "not allowed" to use auto-steer for the remainder of the journey. Good job I was just 5 minutes from home, not on the interstate on a trip. Major fail!...


If it is disabled due to ignoring too many warnings, you can always stop, put the car in Park for a moment, and then go on your merry way.
 
I echo you experience. The new halo warning is almost impossible to miss and the one time I saw it I was able to react well before it got to "chime mode".
A driver can miss the halo warning easily if the steering wheel is set low like I do. I got the beep yesterday and was surprised. Before anyone gets all "fire marshall bill" on me , my hand was resting on the lower part of the wheel. It's only in the peripheral vision if not blocked by hands and the wheel.

i dont have AP, but read all the way through
I split screen and have the Nav on bottom to have the icons stay on all the time up top
When nav is on the entire screen and the buttons go away they dont come back really quick no
matter what you touch or slide your finger
Media is different, but like the new favorites. Still wish I could get KFI 640 talk radio, AM sucks because of poor reception
The icons lack color up top and the phone now is out of place.
The response to spoken commands is a major improvement
I still use my knees sometimes to hold the wheel, My next Tesla will have all the toys like you guys.
And I will adapt to any software change. How cool is it when you wake up and your car has new features.

I find on the forum that people tend to just want to be handed info. Saying 'link?' seems to be a way of challenging, without bothering to check first. It's like 'Prove it to me'. Regulatory rules are out there for everyone. Sorry you were (obviously) offended that I googled it for you.

There have been numerous news articles (and posts, for that matter) about the updated guidance on autonomous vehicles. Tesla is meeting it to the letter.

Just for the record, as soon as I got Ver. 8., I drove the vehicle around for a couple of hours testing various aspects of AP, both on interstate and state roads; I didn't notice a dramatic difference (maybe I missed something?) - although it was my (admittedly subjective) notion that I had to take over control due to steering overshoot fewer times than I had to with previous version. The "steering hands nag" didn't seem all that different. Just as a general comment, we have to be cautious about being perfectionists on this stuff (driver assistance features), it is still pretty early in its adoption cycle, and just about every implementation decision necessarily involves trade-offs. Tesla just needs to make sure that human factors specialists have sufficient input - it can't just be all engineers.
 
Had the Model S 85D for the past year, happy anniversary, and got 8.0 installed on Saturday. Took it out on a 300 mile trip to 6 separate supercharges and not one incident. No nags, no HOLD ONTO THE WHEEL warnings. All behaved as expected with a few hillcrests losing sight of the lanes, which I easily regained control over. But let's be ABUNDANTLY clear, there is no HANDS FREE driving. If you are doing it, then you are violating the terms of usage in which case any crash under AP control could be deemed to be your fault, as the agreement clearly states YOU are in control, not the car. Accept it for what is is, not what you think it should be.

Version 8.0 is better than 7.1. There are bugs, but that occurs in every release an I am certain they will be weeded out in the coming weeks. (Usually get an update about once a week, but expect a little more time before 8.0.1 to cover the vast array of bugs and data gathered from the the fleet.) This will only work to improve an already awesome car. I look forward to seeing improvements over the coming weeks and months. Don't really expect 8.1 for a while due to their wish list of adding features previously mentioned.

If the OP doesn't want their Tesla, I am sure there are plenty out there who will take it off their hands.

I agree. Autopilot is best with your eyes on the road (not the dash) and no hands on the wheel, in part to mitigate accidental disengagement. Although that's just compensating for the human factors issue with disengagement. At least they tried to do something about that, although I don't like any of their solutions. "Slight improvement, but no cigar" is how I'd rate all of it.
