That sounds very appealing, and hints at a great future.

But the cynic in me thinks that such a press release is really saying "don't buy the competitors' car" or "invest in us!" rather than being a legitimate announcement.

Everything Lucid says avoids mentioning Tesla and specifically compares them to luxury ICE vehicles.

They react to Tesla but they don't threaten them.

They aren't a Tesla killer, but they might be a BMW/Audi/Mercedes killer.

Just so long as they can ramp EVs faster than the old guard I'm fine with it being Tesla #1 and Lucid #2 while the ICE brands languish.

Lucid is going to be on Autoline live tomorrow. I wonder what they would say if someone ask them about the frontal area of their car compared to the Model S and how they claim a 17% higher powertrain efficiency.

Autoline interview is up:

They claim that of their 17% more range than a Tesla Model S LR+ with the same size battery it is a result of:
  • 2%: Aero from better CD and lower, narrower, shorter body.
  • 15%: From more efficient drive-train.
If they really have designed drive-units that is 15% more efficient than what Tesla currently has that would be amazing. But I have some serious doubts about that.

They are only planning to make 8-9k vehicles in 2021. In ~9 months, so about 1k/month average. (Obviously fewer at the start of the ramp and more at the end.) Phase 1 is ~34k/year at full speed with 3 shifts.. Phase 2 will be 85-90k/year in 2023. They expect the site to be able to make almost 400k/year by 2026.

The Model 3 motor efficiency is suppose to be 97% I have no idea about the drivetrain.

That's only true in forward motion. How efficient is regen mode? My guess is if you accelerate a Model 3 to highway speed and then regen back to zero, you will get back less than half the original energy. So there is considerable opportunity here for improving city range.

The efficiency of the motor in recovering energy is approximately the same as when providing power. If you lose 5% accelerating you will use another 5% stopping, for a total of 9.75%. But it isn't the motor that dominates, it is the battery, which is less efficient charging and discharging.

Found this Lucid trolling/photo bombing the supercharger at Buttonwillow yesterday. I was excited to see the car as it's so rare as were some other Tesla drivers there. My wife was nonplussed. "what's so great, I don't understand it? Tell me what's special about it". "It's like a Tesla Model S, similar speed, cost, range" I said. My wife said "I don't understand the point of it, why wouldn't you get a Tesla?" I have to agree it was pretty underwhelming though I am sure when it's not covered in camo stickers and bits of trim falling off everywhere it looks better.

How does the size compare to a Model S?

why does every new EV that comes to market labeled as a tesla killer?
how about celebrating the fact that EVs are becoming more available to people, going mainstream rather than being a cult like thing?
bring on more lucids, etrons, taycans, whatever the MB, cadillac entries will be and so on.
competition spurs innovations and brings prices down.
if someone can top what tesla makes great! I as a consumer welcome all the competition.
I just bought a taycan and in some ways it isn't as good as a tesla but it is far superior in other ways.

So I guess this is official. I don't really understand the PIPE investment. Is the private equity diluting the CCIV investment hence the market reaction?

Lucid Motors to Go Public in Merger with Churchill Capital Corp IV, Bolstering Lucid's Vision to Redefine Luxury, Performance and Efficiency in the Sustainable Electric Vehicle Market

The financial insiders are getting a big chunk of the deal for little work and very little risk. That's going to dilute the public investors. The company will immediately need to issue a secondary offering to raise money for production.

That deal is trash for anyone holding commons... Just like 95%+ of all SPAC deals.
BARF!

Also... if I did the math right on their investor deck. They are projecting $23B in revenues on 250k sales in 2026... So ~$90k ASP of a car. And 20% gross profits....

So, basically they will sell 10x the S-class/7-series and barely get a bottom line. And it's about 10x the current production capacity so obv. will need more $$ down the line
