An Unhealthy Obsession

I have an unhealthy obsession with Tesla cars. I wouldn't dare call myself Tesla's number 1 fan but Tesla consumes my thoughts. Every time I'm on the road, I am actively scanning for Teslas. And when I see a Model X, it makes my day a little brighter. The problem with that is I admire the car as it is driving away which has led to some close calls with getting into accidents. What makes it worse is I think I'd be okay with that because in my warped thinking, my car gets totaled and it brings me one step closer to having a conversation with my wife about getting a Tesla. Unhealthy.

Speaking of my significant other, she doesn't want to hear about "Tesla" anymore. At first, she was supportive and dealt with my ramblings of "one day..." I overdid it. She got to the point of starting to root against me getting one because I talked about Tesla too much. Now I have to bite my tongue. I used to have a turrets-like response when we were driving together when I'd spot a Tesla. "Tesla!" I would say maybe hoping that I was planting a seed in her subconscious or something. Not anymore. I think she feels like I put much more thought and effort into Tesla than in our relationship. Unhealthy.

Tesla got me to try something new with the hopes of being able to obtain one someday; I signed up for etrade and traded stock for the first time. Again, with my delusional thinking, I daydreamed that I could buy a Tesla by buying Tesla (stock) and that would solve all my problems. I put my life savings into Tesla and knew that it would be just a matter of time before I'd make enough to buy my dream car. In actuality, the way the stock market has been, I'm moving further and further away from my dream. Totally unhealthy.

I'm a rational person (although it may seem otherwise) who would probably be driving around a Tesla if I were single. However, I am happily married with two young boys and with the above average income that we bring in, being a Model X owner is just out of reach. But, i still perseverate. I try to think of ways I can make it happen. I've scoured the internet for salvaged Teslas, I applied for a Tesla delivery specialist job just because I read somewhere I would get an employee discount (I later learned no such thing exists). I recently got a real estate license hoping some extra side money is the way to do it. That led to thinking, "oh! I can lease one and write it off as a business expense now that I'm an independent contractor!" Healthier?

I'm not sure what I'm looking for here. I guess I'm reaching out with the hopes that others can relate in one way or another. Maybe I'm looking for a support group? Or, simply well wishes and positive vibes? Just sharing my enthusiasm with fellow enthusiasts I suppose. I am a late Model 3 reservation holder and if I receive mine in time to qualify for the $7500 rebate I will probably "settle." I'm secretly hoping I don't qualify and, by then, I'm thinking there'll be a used Model X within my price range because a Model X makes more sense for our family.

Looking forward to updating everyone when this foolish man's dreams finally come true!

Take your SO on a test drive, or do the overnight test drive...go to a few tesla related events (configure a car she would be interested in driving). These can have a lasting impression on a loved one, and to tell her it never needs to be smogged, and serviced but once a year and in the long run is helping to save the planet.

@flynlyon3, not that I'm an expert or anything, but if you've already sunk money into Tesla stock, being brave and holding out until the Model 3 is in production may turn out to be quite rewarding (and you might be able to afford the Model S as a result). Also, as "unhealthy" as you claim to be, this was your first post here on TMC (Welcome, by the way!), so at least you aren't obsessed with TMC like some of us. :)

Hey, you're me! :)

I did not yet bore my wife as much as you, but I'm also thinking that it would be OK to replace one of our cars "if something were to happen"! I was *this* close to preordering the Model 3, but my company card got rejected! Glad I actually didn't, I finally got over it and poured all savings I allocated to the 3 into a new business venture. If that works out, I'll be able to get two instead, even though I don't have a spot in the reservation queue.

It's OK to obsess, but do not make irrational financial decisions if you're in a sensitive spot.

Good luck with the business venture and thanks for the support!

I babble about Pokemon Go to my significant other. My obsession could lead to a traffic accident too. I haven't ordered a Tesla yet, and constantly check this site for news of Autopilot 2.0. We have much in common.

At least we're not obsessed with anything illegal or immoral. :D

You are not alone. I was also obsessed (still am) and then one day my wife said the magic words. "Just shut up and go buy one". She didn't have to repeat it. Within a week I purchased a CPO P85+ and I feel it is one of the best decisions I have ever made. I am still obsessed but I found this forum and won an invite the the gigafactory opening where I met many more obsessed owners (this helped to ensure me that I wasn't going insane). Now my wife says "Only one rule tonight. No talk about Tesla." She thought getting one would somehow shut me up but it has only made me more obsessed.

flynlyon3 is another one of my account here in TMC. Sometimes I write in this ID and sometime using flynlyon3. :)

I like driving my Tesla so much, with AP, that earlier this week I rejected working from home option, in favor of commuting 1 hour each way, each day. It sure is crazy. My manager thought I am crazy. My colleagues think I am crazy. Maybe I am.

OMG! You are obsessed with Teslas..... JUST LIKE ME! IN FACT, I also constantly scan for Teslas on the road, rant and rave about Tesla, and most people around me tell me to just shut up about Tesla.

If you want to do this obsession thing right, you should have been one of the first... ;)

Yes, that. Wife originally said absolutely not and then after she found out it was refundable, she gave me the green light. You can imagine how peeved I was as I fell way back in the queue over a misunderstanding. Trust me, @Canuck , I was ready to pull the trigger on day of release behind her back, but I decided I probably shouldn't..

This sounds sooo recognizable! Hi, by the way! I'm relatively new on the forum, and from The Netherlands. Hadn't posted on the English part of the forum yet.

I too have a constant radar (no pun intended) for Tesla's on the road and yell out "Tesla!" whenever I see one. When I walk past a parked one I stop to admire it. I too have a wife and two young kids. Two dogs too.

We currently drive a gen 3 Prius. My wife and I have been talking about taking the step to a full EV for a while now. For a long time I had not seriously considered Tesla, simply because I couldn't justify paying that much money for a car. "Who pays that much for a car?" Like quite some people on this forum, I never had a real interest in cars. It was just a transportation device.

Then I started to realize there weren't any other EV's out there that would comfortably fit our family. I started reading more about Tesla's, and started watching YT channels such as Björn's and Like Tesla's. Then I got seriously hooked. TMC became one of my most frequently visited sites. I finished Musk's biography by Ashlee Vance in a couple of days. Suddenly I didn't even want an EV from any other car maker anymore; car makers that all produce more petrol cars than EVs.

When I shared my enthusiasm with my wife I too hit a bit of a wall. She loves Tesla's mission, but was very uncomfortable with the idea of owning such an expensive car, especially because of the 'social image' that kind of comes with the car. Even our current Prius is one of the more expensive cars in our neighborhood, so a Tesla will really stand out. When I told her the X would actually be most practical for us she laughed and mimicked the FWDs with her arms in silence. That has become a running gag in the house. Same for trying to use the word 'ludicrous' out of a Tesla context.

But slowly, she started realizing how strong my passion really is. And she didn't want to block that. During one of our many Tesla discussions she gave me her full blessing... "if you want it this badly, then go for it! I'll enjoy driving it!"

So... coming Wednesday, on my birthday, I will be off to Tesla to go over the last details and place my order for a 7-seater Model X. Super excited!
